I am a bit tired but very happy. Got the biggest book I will ever own last night. Get ready for this. The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. It has all five stories in the series plus a sixth story dealing with Young Zaphod! I am going to take this with me on my honeymoon to read! Funny thing is it was only 15 bucks, had to be on sale.

That's so cool Bsg! I just got the set myself a year ago. Absolutely wonderful read.
The thickest book I ever owned was when I was a small child. Our Purity supermarket (and "super"market was an odd new word then), had this offer where you could buy a small section of a very large dictionary when you went shopping each week, for next to nothing. So my mom, having such a large family, faithfully bought each and every section. After what must have been a year and a half, she finally bought the binding as well. The result? A HUGE Webster's dictionary -- and I mean BIG!!! I could not lift it till I was 5. I do not know how many pages, 4 or 5 thousand I suppose. It weighed about 15 pounds, maybe more.
My older sister and I then began a pasttime which lasted all of our childhood -- we would randomly thumb thru it and ask each other what each word meant. If we didn't know (90% of the time) than we would tell each other by reading the definition from it.
By the time we entered 4th grade, we had an awesome vocabulary, which has held us both in good stead throughout our lives. I still think back on those times fondly...

had a quiet weekend finally. went and saw my parents this weekend and then yesterday we went to Six Flags up here. I will never go on this one ride we went on. I always want to stop to (and if I were the one driving I would) but Chris doesn't stop either. if the ducklings were a few months old they will be able to eat on their own they just won't have their mothers protection, hopefully someone else saw them and took them in. We get that a lot in Vancouver with Stanley Park being right next to the city core.

PS: Sometimes it's not a good idea to put anything on the sunburn as some things can create a seal, not allowing your skin to breathe, which actually makes the burn worse.

It must have been the weather, I didn't sleep well, either. I stopped at the coffee shop on the way to work and got their extra large 24 ounce cup of Wild Blueberry coffee this morning. Mmmmmmm, good. (But not doing a whole lot for the fatigue, caffeine just doesn't affect me very much.)
The sad thing is, I am so predictable that when I pulled up to the drive-through the owner opened the window and handed me my coffee without even having to ask what I wanted. If I were feeling a little more contrary I would have said I wanted something different, but it was a very sweet gesture, so I controlled my impulse and thanked him. ;)

Well it's not as bad as all that. It's more of the fact that I worry about my kids. And that will never end. My youngest daughter is 3, and she still seems to find her way into my bed, to sleep with mommy and daddy.

Kids are great and can make your heart swell.
I have fostered so many kids I have lost count, mostly teenagers. At times I have had 5 children under my wing together, for a year at a time! The youngest I have fostered was 3 the oldest, is now 18 and still with me. I can't get rid of him (not that I want to!), he says that this is his home and we are his family. That tugs at my heart, knowing that. I have had many kids that have not wanted to leave and still have a strong bond with them. I have had a child that liked to give me gifts, to say how she apreciated what I did for her and to show that she loved me, I later discovered that she had shoplifted to do so. I then had to explain to her the wrongs of this. I have also been told that when they have kids themselves, I will become 'grandma'.
My own daughter who is 10 years old, is so loving and caring dispite her serious illness. When I broke my ankle last year, she was more upset about it than me. And wanted to look after me, despite the fact that she needed alot of help and crutches herself.
Its a shame that they grow up so quick, and have to go through that grotty teenage spell.
I am only 31 and single, and feel that I have had a lifetime of experience raising kids, and I would do it all again, if the rewind button was pressed. Sadly my fostering career is coming to an end, so I will be having one more placement, then I move on, but I will still be heavily involved in fostering in my new work, as I can not fully turn my back on it.

I am not yet a mom to any two-legged people, but my puppy is like a child to me. He will be 2 in August and I am actually upset that I will miss his birthday because I will be on vacation! I have twelve year-old dog that I adopted three years ago and I adore her, but I don't have that same bond that I do with the puppy. I don't know what I would do if something happened to him, but I came pretty close to losing him yesterday, so I am still pretty panicky.
Every day that it isn't raining (the puppy doesn't like to rained on) I take my dogs through the woods for a good run before we get to the road and I leash them for the rest of the walk. It's a 1 mile hike through the laurel to get to the road from my backyard, which gets out some of that energy my puppy has built up during the day (and tires out the poor elderly Shepherd, but she needs the exercise).
Last night I was walking along and the dogs were sniffing through the undergrowth when all of a sudden my puppy makes this terrible, snarling cry for help. There are coyotes in the area, so I thought that's what happened. I grabbed a big stick and went running to help. About 30 seconds later my puppy comes racing through the bushes with what looks like a large dog about two feet behind him. It wasn't a dog, though, it was a big, angry deer. (A fairly large doe, actually.)
She came within about six feet of me, gave me a "You want a piece of me, too?!" kind of look and then ran away. I checked him out and he seemed fine, just scared witless, so I continued with the walk for about another half a mile until I saw him walking strangely and looked him over again. She must have hit him with her hoof, because he had a gash in his side that is about 4 inches long. It was so thin that it hadn't opened up yet when I checked him the first time. All I could think of was broken ribs, internal injuries, etc. At that point I was a mile from home, so we walked back as fast as he could and I put him in the car and called the vet on the way there.
The good news is that she must have only grazed him because there don't appear to be any major injuries (he was too upset to eat his dinner, but he ate some treats and he is going to the bathroom normally, he also has no trouble breathing, etc.). But, because the vet is worried about an infection, he didn't stitch up the gash (which goes almost all the way to the bone) so that I could clean it daily.
The poor little guy is terribly sore and the gash is obviously causing him some pain. I can't get anywhere near it without him crying (he snapped at the vet when he was cleaning it and he is normally the most loving and patient of dogs, he even likes to have his ears cleaned with a Q-Tip) and he jumps at every loud noise. He wouldn't let me out of his sight and he didn't seem to want to sleep last night because he kept pacing up and down (he may not be able to get comfortable, it's on the side he usually lays on, right along one of his ribs). He won't even go outside to go to the bathroom without me being right next to him and he trembles and shakes in fear most of the time.
So, sorry to ramble on and on, but it was a scary experience and I needed to share it. I reported it to the Fish & Game officer, just in case and told the neighbors to be careful in the woods as there are young children and elderly people who like to walk that trail. She probably had a fawn that Daniel wanted to play with and she was protecting it, but who knows.
I also wanted to ask if anyone has had a similar experience. I am sure the gash will heal just fine, but I am more concerned about his state of mind. He is a very sensitive creature and I am concerned about how long it will take him to get back to his usual rambunctious and vivacious self (if he ever will). He didn't even give the cat a second glance yesterday and she was right in front of him, which is usually cause for a lively chase through the house.

Uno...
So glad to hear your puppy is okay. I am sorry you guys had to go through such a terrible experience. I totally know about needing to talk about tramatic things I am the same way. It does help and it seems this is a very good group of people. I think what you need to do is just give your pup all the love and support he wants and needs. He will recover in his own time only he know what that time frame is. As long as you are there and it sounds like he is lucky to have you...he will get better. I am sure the vet did the best thing for the gash...they know their stuff. You know children or puppies or any other pet...to me it is all about love. Well, and more love and scacrifice and patience. Let me know how he does..................

I remember when one of my dogs got run over. She was very clingy and quiet for a while.
Especially while she was healing from her wounds. It took a few months, but eventually she slowly started to be as she was before the accident. Love and patience is all your dog needs, which you have plenty of. Mark my words, he will be back to normal again. You will just have to hope that he keeps a wide berth from larger animals like deer, in the future.

He didn't even give the cat a second glance yesterday and she was right in front of him, which is usually cause for a lively chase through the house.Uno I was a veterinary technician for several years there are pain meds the vet can prescribe it will make caring for the wound easier and some also have a drowsy side effect that will help the puppy to sleep the one I use for my cats is called Metacam (brand name) (It has both effects) it's a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory the active ingredient is meloxicam the product is made by Boehringer Ingelheim DIN number 02237715 your pet should not have to endure pain that is a rather old fashioned idea there are plenty of pain killers for animals out there just demand it for your pet, unless there is respiratory, liver, heart or kidney problems with your pet there should be no reason not to give pain meds.
With regards to his behavior a lot of positive reinforcement, encouragement and patience he has been traumatized and is having a severe reaction. Keep a pocket full of treats on you at all times and every time he does something brave give him a treat and make a big deal out of it lots of pets and "good boy!" So ie if he goes outside and walks a few feet from you and looks back at you walk up to him give him the treat go crazy with the loves and then stop let him take a few steps away again and so on. Don't project your concern for him he will pick up on that. Wait to take him out on that walk for a bit start with the putting the leash on in the yard and taking him for walks there first and reward him for every thing he does right don’t' worry about all the other behavior don't acknowledge it or you'll be reinforcing it instead. Did I explain that well enough? I've trained the hunter killer behavior out of my dogs (who used to kill any small animal)they now cohabitate with 7 cats it is possible to change behavior. Consistency is very important, and perseverance, it took me 18 months to get there. Let me know if you need anymore ideas or info I'll do my best to help Uno.

Hi all! Sorry I was gone all day. Promised my daughter I would give her free rein, plus we had lotsa company.
We had a little party for my daughter, with my in-laws attending (funny that my fam' rarely visits while my in-laws (innies?) visit quite a bit. DIfference in culture I guess). When we have a BBQ it's always a strange mix of cultural cuisine. I have come to like their odd "beans and rice" -- it's not what you think - it's PURPLE. They mix the rice and beans together with coconut milk and onions and fry it. After 15 years I have come to really like it. And their carne asada is ten times better than steak, because it's a great cut of beef and extremely thin, so the flavor of the BBQ goes /all/ the way thru (not like steak and burgers where only the surfacce is tasty). It's expensive though - $5 a pound!
But for dessert -- ah, good old American strawberry shortcake! A lady came by the other day selling /extremely/ fresh strawberries (and huge too). One nice thing about farming country, you're never at a loss for fresh goodies for cheap (she sold me a "flat" for only $6 - that's about 14-16 of those little plastic baskets). They were SOOOOOOOO sweet, yum!!! We almost finished off the whole thing!

I have one son, almost nine. He is my little angle on Earth. He is at that age that if we are in public or around his friends I'm not allowed to touch him.....no huggs or little kisses. Especially around his friends!
When we are at home it is a totally different story. He's still my little shadow ;)
He thinks he's such a big boy now, but he still wants me to read to him before he goes to bed and some mornings after I had tucked him in his own bed........I awake to find he has crawled into bed with me!
I wouldn't trade any of those special moments for anything in the world......for I know in a few more years my little boy will be really all grown up.

Thank you to everyone who showed concern for my puppy. He is doing much better and is cleaning the wound, which is a good sign. He even felt up to catching a snake and chasing the cat this weekend, but he has no interest in going into the section of woods where the deer chased him. I will work him towards that slowly and on his leash.
I was able to bring him into work with me for a few hours on Friday, I didn't have to go anywhere that I couldn't bring him this weekend, and he is with me at work all day today, which is doing him a ton of good (he's a bit of a Cling-On and gets a little bit of separation anxiety when he can't see me). The wound looks worse than it is and he doesn't seem to be in pain (unless he bumps it into something), so he will be fine.
Thank you again,

Thanks Muffit!
I have one son, almost nine. He is my little angle on Earth. He is at that age that if we are in public or around his friends I'm not allowed to touch him.....no huggs or little kisses. Especially around his friends! I remember that but I was older when it hit me.
When we are at home it is a totally different story. He's still my little shadow ;)
He thinks he's such a big boy now, but he still wants me to read to him before he goes to bed and some mornings after I had tucked him in his own bed........I awake to find he has crawled into bed with me!
That sounds so nice!
I wouldn't trade any of those special moments for anything in the world......for I know in a few more years my little boy will be really all grown up. Especially when he hits the teenage years and starts to shoot up and his voice changes etc. and that is only a few years away:( so enjoy now that is for sure!:D

Hello Uno,
I’m quite new here (although a big BSG fan for so many years) and usually I don’t participate that much. Nevertheless, from what I’ve been reading here, it looks like everyone’s very nice and I believe I’ll be participating much more in the future (if you all let me, of course). :salute:
All of this just to let you know that I completely understand your panic over your puppy's injury and I’m quite happy he is recovering well.
Eight months ago I lost my dog, my best pal for 14 years, and I still miss him very much and my eyes get a little wet every time I think of him (like now).
So, I’m quite happy is doing fine and I can tell you he, most certainly, will come up well in the end.
One day, my dog fell off a balcony one storey high and, although he did not broke a single bone or had any internal injury, he was very scare and for almost five days he did not eat and did not want to go to the bathroom. After that he slowly began to regain his confidence and went on being the craziest dog in the world!!
P.S. I hope you forgive my typos and my poor English but this is not my usual language!!

Welcome Terra and thank you. I am very sorry about your dog, I know how it feels to lose a lifelong companion. Have you ever read "The Rainbow Bridge"? Here it is, in case anyone else would like to read it:
THE RAINBOW BRIDGE
"Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here,
that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill or old are restored to health and vigor;
those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them in our dreams of days gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing;
they each miss someone very special to them who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together,
but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.
His bright eyes are intent;his eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass,
his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling to each other in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face;
your hands again caress the beloved head,
and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet,
so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together........"

Actually, there is a collection of poems for animal lovers at http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/7848/bridgepoem.html#story1 that always brings tears to my eyes.
I lost a 12 year-old dog to cancer and it was devestating, she had been my shoulder to cry on during my teenage years and it was almost ten years before I felt ready to get a dog again. When I was ready I decided to adopt a senior citizen (ten at the time) sight unseen from a Yahoo list called "Dogs Needing People" and when I arrived to pick her up, she was an exact replica of my other dog! The only difference was that she had pointed ears instead of half-floppy ones and she was 15 pounds overweight. (The puppy ran those pounds right off her when I got him a year later.)

Your grasp of English is just fine if you can make jokes. I am definitely impressed. I lived in Panama for two years and most of the Spanish words I remember are ones I can't repeat on a G-rated site, so I know how difficult it is to communicate in a language that is not your own.

We are still investigating other possible problems but the two big untreatable killers have been eliminated so I'm breathing easier. He does have an unexplained inflammation and we need to determine the cause before we are completely in the clear, so more tests!!
He is looking at the possibility of thyroid problems which I'm not happy to hear about because that was what my last cat died of and it was A LOT of work to keep the balance for her! and a lot of money too! I'm hoping it 's nothing like that.
Thursday I take him in to get weighed and if he is not maintaining his weight or if he is loosing weight then we need to do more tests.
In my lifetime I have probably had over 30 cats but only 2 other cats have ever been this special or important to me.

Okay, I have to share this with you! I’m sorry if I sound boring! :nervous:
Yesterday we (Portugal) defeated Spain at a football (soccer) match for the Euro 2004 and now we will play the quarter finals of the Euro probably with England or Croatia. :bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce:
We are organizing the Euro 2004 and usually we are not that good when it comes to achieve positive things and be mobilized. :(
However, until now everything is going very well, with no major incidents, and right now everyone is feeling very patriotic.
It’s the power of football! It could be worse (but it could be, definitely, better… Oh well). ;)
Anyway, there’s this campaign called “a window, a flag” and I can swear I had never seen, in my entire life, so many Portuguese flags. We can see a lot of windows, from north to south, with the Portuguese flag! I admit my window has no flag. Not that I’m not patriotic but I still have to overcome this prejudice feeling regarding this kind of things. :/:
All this just to say that, as the Spaniards were so convinced they were going to win, this victory has a special flavor.
Olé!!!!!!

no i didn't have a good time. I had a ton of things here that I needed to do but my father in law chooses to ignore that fact seeing as Sunday we had just gotten home from our honeymoon and we got hit with the fact we had to watch the house. He thinks the neighbors are going to do something to it if someone isn't there to protect it. Kev has already told him that we are not going to be able to do it next year.

I am glad that he stood up to them, bsg, it was very inconsiderate to ask you to leave your home so soon after the honeymoon.
So, how is life as a newlywed now that you are home and settling in again?

I think you got a prince there. He's a very strong person to stand up to his
father like that and not let him 'assume' that you'll both be there FOREVER,
and EVER to be taken for granted.

well I too need everyone's support. I thought this last weekend I was going to be able to be here as it was reserve weekend. Ha Ha! My weekend didn't go that way. To start off the explanation is easy. All last week into the weekend I have been feeling sick to my stomach, don't know what's going on so hubby wants me to get checked out as it is starting to worry him. Friday, we were on our way out the door to go to a movie when my sister calls me to inform me that there was an unexpected death in the family. (My stepdad's aunt in the Bronx passed away) Then as I said before it was reserve weekend. So I thought I was going to be sitting at home by myself during the day while he was gone, uh uh, not gonna happen. He wanted to take me to a retirement ceremony for a captain he worked with before being transferred to his new unit. Got a dang sunburn from it. So as you see my week and weekend went into the toliet before it even got started.

yes but the dang idiot doctor I saw last night said there was no possible way that I could be pregnant if I had taken two home pregnancy tests and they came out negative. Said it was stomach troubles and gave me a prescription for nexium. My mom thinks that I am and so doesn't my older sis. After all between them they have had 8 kids. If the record skips this week I am going to want to go back and throttle the doctor!

We are back from the hospital, thank god thats all over.
My daughter was so brave, not one complaint at all from her.
She is resting now, and is sore and tired.
At least this time round it was not as bad. The last time she had an op, she had open heart surgery to save her life, and spent a long time in hospital. She was 7 then, and is now 10.
It will be nice when she can have her hip replacement surgery when she is 16. This surgery was also on her hips, to help her with the pain.

supplies :D

I've seen some beautiful plastic canvas things out there. I especially love
the tissue box covers myself.
I've never done plastic canvas although my oldest kid
Marissa has taken to that pretty well. But I am into weaving, knitting,
crocheting, etc ................
