Omg, I just remembered a sign I placed in the bathroom as a teen after I got tired of cleaning the bathrooms at home after cleaning in a nursing home!
It read: "If you sprinkle when you... (you get the idea), be a sweetie and wipe the seatie!"
Got alot of laughs from the family! Until my younger brother took it down!

was doing that last night! this may seem a bit strange to you guys but everytime she lands in the hospital she says that my beloved grandad, my late father and his mother and now my recently deceased grandmother come to visit her and tell her things will be ok. I don't think it strange at all because they came to visit me when I had my foot surgery.
Rowan
March 10th, 2004, 03:50 PM
Hey bsg I don't think of that as strange, some of my family is like that too. Plus working in Nursing especially those who come close to death they often tell you the see people or talk to them. I always thought that for some the door is open between both worlds.:)

I called him yesterday, and he said he doesn't feel too bad. He just has trouble breathing, and feels dizzy. The doc says it was "congenital heart failure", due to excessive liquids (even water I guess). Trouble is, his prescriptions say to take them with 8 ounces of water - so there's the rub.
My Mom had the hardest time getting him to stay home from work (yes, he's still working a full work week at 75!), but finally she and his boss talked him into taking 2 days off. He says he's been working his whole life and just can't stand to not be working. Plus their finances are in dire straights now since the stock crash.
Wish I could see him but they're clear in Arizona. Luckily God doesn't charge long distance for prayers...
Affectionately,
Muffit

Muffit this doesn't make sense to me, medically speaking, are you sure it's not congestive heart failure? Which would produce an excessive fluid build up in the lungs? Making it difficult for him to breath at times or he might cough especially in the AM... can you double check that your mum has correctly understood his diagnosis? Congenital means he's had this condition since birth, and you would have seen signs and symptoms of this eons ago. :)

Eeks, you're right Rowan. It is congestive. Oops, sorry, I'm not the medical person in the family ;). He does have an enlarged heart though, not sure what that is called in medical terms. Maybe that's why I got confused?
Thanks for the correction :).

So sorry to hear that Rowan. Will be thinking of you and your family.
I had a similar experience. My grandmother-in-law, in her mid-nineties, came to visit just before my daughter was born and said sadly, almost crying, "I won't live to see this baby". She was an incredibly nice woman, she LOVED Star Trek TOS, subsisted on fried pork fat, smoked a pipe all day, and STILL was healthy as a moose. But she knew her time was coming, and she had to return to Florida.
So I made a promise to myself that, somehow, someway, she would see her great grandchild. So when my daughter was born, even though we didn't have the money, we traveled to Florida just so she could hold her great grandchild in her arms and defeat that terrible fear she had months before.
When she passed away a few months later, I'm told she was quite happy and content. I like to think I helped her feel like that in some small way.

sounds similar to when we lost my step great grandmother. She died from cancer. She was in a home where its for people who are terminal with cancer. My brother in law had gone into the hospital the night before for his appendix and my dad had just come in off the road. My step grams got a call from the home that her mom wasn't doing well and they didn't think she was going to make it. So my step grams and her husband went to the home. Amma, as the family called her, knew that Ed was having surgery and that dad was due in from his latest trip. She looked over at her daughter and asked if Ed and Jon were home yet. It was like she was waiting for everyone to be where they were supposed to be so she could let go. My step grams told her that Ed was going to be released that day and my step dad had gotten in the night before from his run. Amma smiled and closed her eyes and just slipped away.

thanks. I just found out today that my stepbrother aka "junior" has a cancerous brain tumor. He has started treatment for it and thank god the doctors found it in the early stages. oh my god bsg I am so sorry to hear of your news. This is a very tough cancer to deal with...in terms of location, because it can affect personality, memory etc. There is a very special place in the united states that deals specifically with the treatment of brain cancer the technique they use elimintaes only the cancer and not healthy brain tissue, it's located in california if your interested I could look up the info and send it to you? In the mean time I am sending love, support, prayers and lots of hugs and if you need to talk I'm here for you.

Perhaps this is the secret reason your wedding has been postponed (it seems) thus far - to give you an inner joy to help cope with these terrible other problems?
I am not a stranger to tragedy, and God knows I am no good example of how to deal with it, but please know all our thoughts and prayers are with you. Think on the joy of your upcoming wedding, and let that be your strength.

today is the funeral and I can't attend because I have a class that is worth 2.5 % of my final grade and I'm just sqeeking through dam pathophysiology!! so I'm severely in the dog house with my boyfriend and his family. I tried to explain that if I don't pass this course I will be kicked out of nursing and that wil be it! But he's too angry and upset with me I can tell it's gonna be another long hard and emotionally exhausting week!:P:

Do not let it get to you Rowan. Many people (esp. guys) have a hard time understanding just how important (not just important but critical) creating a career is. For most of us, we only get one shot at it. That's it. And if we let the bumps and potholes in life make us pull over and miss our chance, we spend the rest of our lives in regret. Worse, we usually (and for good reason) aim that regret at those responsible for making us miss our chance. And that, in the long run, is far more destructive to a relationship than missed family gatherings.
Please just let him know as best you can: better to be mad at you now for something you will both quickly get over, than harbor bitterness toward him for the rest of your lives together for missing your chance at a true and valuable career.
Life doesn't give second chances. Love does.
My best to you,

Yes, mom is doing great. I am thoroughly po'd at my older sister. I sent her the information for the invitations to give to mom so mom could get an estimate and let us know how much it is going to cost us. My sister had a slight problem with her puter and promised me yesterday morning that she was going to give the information to mom yesterday when she took her for the dr's appointment and she did not follow through. so now mom has to go out to my sister's and pick up the stuff so she can go to see the printer about the invitations. I will never trust my sister to do anything again for me as far as my wedding goes!

Suddenly I'm on top of the world

*Believe it or not I'm walking on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flying away on a wing and a prayer
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me
Just like the light of a new day
It hit me from out of the blue
Breaking me out of the spell I was in
Making all of my wishes come true

Who could it be?

Don't give up. I've had people like this coordinator in my life telling me what
a loser, and failure I was and how I would never amount to anything. THese
people did everything they could to keep me from graduating Highschool and
attending collage all because I was different {due to my autism}.
They were wrong about me .......Rowan I did Graduate High school and I did
go to collage {allthough these people did ROB me of scholarships simply because
they didn't think a RETARD had any business achieving anything}. However I
did go to collage. I was even in the military and served honorably.
The point of this is to tell you ONE thing ROWAN .........these people were WRONG
about me .............and that coordinator is WRONG about you. Don't ever let
someone else try to take your dreams away or break your spirit. If I can
over come my obstacles I know without any doubt that you can overcome yours.

Shiningstar:star: now I know you are aptly named! Thank you so much for you faith in me and your support I really appreciate it! I make this so big because this whole school thing has taken such a toll on my relationship. It's very hard on us to have me in school all the time and needing the space and time to study all the time. Plus I was hoping that when I graduated I could start to try and have a child , but the longer it takes me to graduate the older I get the less likely that becomes, hence my added anxiety! I know I 've got to keep the focus smaller! but she is so duplicitous, incincere and manipulative! Her reputation as such is know to other nurses in the comunity, I've even been told by nurses in the program that you need to watch your back with her. I'm gonna poor it on today and hope that my charm, willingness to cooperate and all the rest will win her over. spending the morning trying to relax, keep my focus, dress and look approprietly and write up the "what I want to see happen" document the counsellor suggested I make. Thanks again Shiningstar:) I'll let you know later today what happened

ok I like the way you think! although in my experience it's been my wallet not his!
I've supported almost every boy friend i've ever had. this is the first time in 20 years of dating that a man is paying the bills. I even put one guy through 7 years of university he owes me tens of thousands of dollars that I will never see. :/:

I have always supported myself. I never had enough in my wallet to support a man, as well as my kids, until recently. Luckily, the man I found is very generous and earns extremely good £££. I have known him for 9 years and were (and still) best friends. He treated me last month to a long weekend in Paris. He does buy me jewelry but alas no diamond..yet!

Hi Rowan, it's been happening for at least a dozen years. Actually, I have a pretty good idea why, but not something I really want to talk about.
Mostly its really bad stuff, rape, attempts to kill me, being urinated on, etc.
Sad thing is hard as I try I cannot control the outcome, or even my reactions. I do things in the dreams I would never do for real.
For instance, last night was about me dying of some illness. Funny thing, there is something wrong with my left arm. It started about a month ago, severe pain just below the elbow. Now a month later its spread down to my wrist. A month ago it was too painful to lift up full milk cartons with my left hand, the gripping caused pain along the length of my arm. Now a month later I cannot lift empty cereal boxes. Sadly, going to the doctor is out, we are buried in medical bills, and despite $300 a month payments to our insurance, they refuse to cover anything.
*sigh* Anywho, I try to think about good things, make up jokes, etc. Seems to help. And of course all my friends here make life much more wonderful than it might be :) :) :) I think I do pretty good at staying happy and optimistic, that's really who I am...

Muffit with regards to your nightmares sounds like this goes way beyond the parameters availbale on this forum. I wish sometimes you guys were only a phone call away, discussing stuff like that is tough in a written format. I'm sure psychologist or psychiatrist is too much money too cause it sounds like you need to work it out with someone like that. I don't know what to tell you, this sounds really awful, but you might want to think about a way to empower yourself in your nightmares. I usually find mightmares happen for me when I feel helpless in them sometimes writng out the nightmare to the best of your memory then re write it were your the hero or the vanquisher and you win or you get the bad guy might help to change the broken record pattern in your mind over time.
But pain I might be able to help you with . I'm going to ask you a few questions about it to help me try and make a recomendation :First what have you done so far to deal/treat with the pain? Second did you injure your arm some how? when you say just below the elbow does that include any joints? or is it located between the wrist and elbow joints ?

Hi Rowan! Yeah, I guess I'll drop the dreams discussion, doesn't fit with my silliness. ;) ;) ;)
No injury to my arm. The joints hurt too but most of the pain is deep in the upper side of my arm between elbow and wrist. It hurts the most when I try to grasp something and carry it. I haven't done anything to treat it, I figure its nothing, and a little pain now and then really doesn't bother me.
It's really more annoying than anything else. I just was wondering cuz it seems to be spreading, and of course picking stuff up is now pretty difficult. I forgot you were a medical student, but please don't let me bother you with all this stuff, unless of course it interests you.

I am sorry to hear about your health problems.
It makes me greatful that here in England, we have the National Health, so we do not have to worry about those bills and insurance.
I would be screwed, as my daughter developed a serious health problem 3 years ago, and I almost lost her. She had to spends months in a hospital in Oxford, and to this day needs alot of care. We are in and out of the hospital each week, and the medication she is on costs the earth, and she's on tonnes to keep her alive.

AKA (all kidding aside) you must do something about that. Money is not the issue. Even if you're buried in debt, your health is more important, and what you describe sounds serious. Listen to Rowan--maybe she'll figure out something and give you some good advice, and maybe it won't cost you much to take it. That's a best case scenario. But it's too risky to just sit back and say "It's probably nothing". Maybe you just banged the arm and ruptured a nerve. But if you didn't do anything to injure it, it could be something a LOT worse, and you can't take the chance that it will be OK just because you don't have extra money. You must do something about it!

Muffit, you can be as silly or as serious as you like especially with me for I am both as well. We all have things in our lives that are not rosy! getting into those kind of intense deep converastions with friends is one of my favorite things believe it or not, it's just really hard to do here. But if we ever meet in person we could go for coffee some where and have a good talk!
Yes Pain and it's mangement is a pet topic for me! it most definitely interests me.
I am concerned about the location of this pain, it's an odd spot. As well I'm concerned that it feels like it's spreading. is there any swelling involved or redness, is it hot to the touch? have your tried icing it? or using an anti inflamatory? is it worse by the end of the day? it could be just a tendon but it could also me something more.

Thomas, if it worsens I will probably go in next month on your suggestion. We used to have Blue Cross which was wonderful. Our new insurance is so obscure even facilities in the same city have never heard of it.
Rowan, it's really wierd. I don't see any swelling, it's not red, and physically there really aren't any signs. It just suddenly started about a month ago, and I'm sure I didn't injure it. I don't feel any lumps either. But then again, it's very deep so I wouldn't expect to. Yes, it has spread though, down to my wrist. The pain is mild unless I try to grasp something. Picking up mildly heavy objects (like milk) is no longer possible. Pretty strange huh? Could be a strained tendon I suppose(?)
Thanks so much for your help :)

have you been typping a lot more than usual lately?
Does it feel like a burning sensation?
How would you describe it sharp, stabbing etc.
is the pain worse as the day progresses ?
is the pain there only when you pick something up?

I'm certain it's not carpal tunnel syndrome or anything like that. (I am not a touch typist). My left arm is usually completely at rest. It's a sharp stabbing pain. I never get it at the computer, cuz I have an extremely relaxed way of typing (based on many years of good exp!).
It always hurts but only mildly. Except when I pick something up. Then its quite painful. Anything heavy and I have no strength to lift it. For instance, I usually pick up the frying pan full of whatever with my left hand and use my right hand to spoon the stuff out. That is too painful now, so I have to switch hands. My grip seems to be weak too. A month ago only heavy stuff like full milk cartons hurt. Now its pretty much anything over an ounce. Pretty strange huh?
Thanks so much for your help!

P.S. (It does not get worse or better as the day goes on, it's pretty much steady)

ok boy oh boy Muffti! you have to answer all these questions so cut and past and just say yes or no or elaborate if needed
is this the only place in your body that you are feeling this kind of response even in the mildest way?
do you have any other symptomes no matter how seemingly insignificant that you have noticed in the last month?
have you been taking any meds (steroids?) or herbs or anything different in your diet?
do you experience any muscle twitching?
cramps in your arm?
Stiffness?
tingling?
burning?
numbness?
involuntary contractions?
also could you take an anti inflamatory and tell me if it has any effect?

is this the only place in your body that you are feeling this kind of response even in the mildest way?
About a week ago it happened in my left leg where it meets my hip, but it rarely hurts, just maybe once a week. Might be a strain.
do you have any other symptomes no matter how seemingly insignificant that you have noticed in the last month?Just feel yucky inside sometimes, like something's wrong but don't know what.
have you been taking any meds (steroids?) or herbs or anything different in your diet?Nothing different in the last 2 months.
do you experience any muscle twitching?
Nope
cramps in your arm?
Nope
Stiffness?
Nope
tingling?
Nope
burning?
Nope
numbness?
Nope
involuntary contractions?
Nope
also could you take an anti inflamatory and tell me if it has any effect?
Sure I could try.
I'm sorry if I'm not being very helpful. The only real symptoms are that it hurts when I grab or lift things with my left arm, and seems to be getting worse. And as I mentioned sometimes my insides feel really wierd, but it always passes.

Muffit this could be much more than a sore arm...let me do some more research and take the info you've given me so far and do a little info sharing. I will keep asking questions now and then to fine tune my diagnosis ( ) I am attemting to determine if this is serious enough to go to a doctor with or if it is something we can take care of with a home remedy. So if you can bare with me on this I'd appreciate it. Are you cool with that? I should have either more questions or an answer for you by Monday ok?
Get back to me onthe anti inflamatory you should know if it is making a difference within and hour or two I need to know if it does or does not help.

that's a good thing. There is nothing more off putting and will slow the recovery down of a patient than a nurse or doctor with a bad bedside manner. I should know I have seen it before. Once with my mother and then last fall when Kev ended up having and overnight stay due to a fluke raised heart beat! The nurse he had was rude to me and him. I wanted to smack that witch!

Take the anti-inflamatory/muscle relaxant. If you don't have any at home see a doctor. You may have a minor muscle inflammation that can't heal because you keep irritating it with daily life. A couple days on an anti-inflammatory will usually cure it. It it doesn't you probabaly need to see a doctor anyway.
You need to see a professional about your nightmares. If they don't go away over years only a professional therapist (maybe hypnotherapist) is going to help things. Most people get past trauma with time. But if time doesn't help you need real help. If nightmares are just occasional (once every couple months or so) you probably just have to live with it and hope you have an understanding family.
Although it doesn't happen as much anymore when I was in the military and for years afterwards I would occasional dream I was in combat. My kids to this day are not allowed to come near my head to wake me when I'm asleep. They have to stay at the end of my bed, wiggle my toes, and call to me. A few years ago I came uncomfortably close to hitting my daughter when she woke me up in the middle of the night when I was dreaming I was in a war.
Over the years my wife has told me that I occasionally order her around like she is a soldier when I am asleep and on one occasion told her to give me more ammunition in the middle of the night. We laugh about it for the most part although she will whack me to wake me up if I sound angry (I talk in my sleep if I'm really tired sometimes).
Unfortunately some people are genetically predisposed to some sleep problems. Talking in your sleep as an adult and sleep walking as a kid seems to run from my paternal Grandfather to my father to me and now to my daughter. Knowing about it however makes it much easier to deal with in your own children. When my daughter shows up in my room or down stairs after I put her to bed I assume she's sleep walking until I verify otherwise. A sleep walker will usually answer questions but since they don't know where they are in reality they get confused or answer inappropriately. I have to wake her up and that isn't as easy as you'd think. If I don't she will just wander out again since her mind is still stuck in that semiconscious world.

A very, very nice older man (friend of my Dad's actually), was a POW in
North Korea for 7 years. I got to know him cuz he liked my music and
sometimes asked computer-related questions.
The entire remainder of his life he was plagued by awful nightmares. He
went thru, I don't know, half a dozen wives I guess, not because of his
personality or anything (he was ultra-kind to his women ;)), but
because every night he would thrash and thrash and end up bopping them.
After being awakened he had no memory of it. Sadly, his women could not
handle it over a period of years.
It's so sad he went thru all that pain and horror, and then it left him
with this dream illness that helped spoil the rest of his life as well.
Such a nice person for this to happen to.
Thanks for your help!

When my sister was in university she used to stay up late to study but she would fall asleep with the book in her hands, I'd come in and try to take it out of her hands to get her more comfortable for sleep she'd open her eyes look at me and tell me she was studying she was adament so I'd say ok walk a few steps away and before I could get to the door you could hear her snoring again so I'd tip toe back and try to take the book or turn off the lights and in a heart beat her eyes would fly open and she'd protest again. Sh ;) :D e was completly asleep and never had an memory of this, this happened all the time and she was a great sleep walker too!

Hi Rowan! Yep, actually I've been taking them off and on for a while. This week the arm seems a bit better though. Probably not using it as much is helping.
I tried to email you to the addie you sent but it got sent back (?). Also, CF seems plagued with probs these last few days, probably something with the host or server. If you don't see my replies for a while, be of good cheer, they're somewhere in cyber limbo ;)

That's low. Sorry I didn't see this earlier, lil sis, been a busy day for me, too. :rose:
Go to the head of your department, school dean, whoever is in charge. Tell them what happened. Tell them how well you have been doing and how close you are to finishing the course. Tell them you would have been able and were willing to do the clinic work.
In other words, go over her head. They may make accomodations for you. The worse they can do is say "no."
We're with you, hon.

I am good at it everyone tells me that and I'm in the top percentile of my semester. She just has a hate on for me, and it's a long story suffice to say I'm not a good butt kisser! I hate playing games, I'm all about putting the cards on the table and dealing with it openly and constructively and she's all about the behind the scenes power play, and she's dam good at it! all smiles to your face with the pointy knife hidden behind her back.
can I send my big brothers over to fix her up? :D ;)
My girlfriend and I are getting together tomorrow to put a plan in action and get things going, I'm going to give it my best shot there is sooo much riding on this! it's the difference between graduating in 3 yrs from now instead of just 9 months!
I wanted to have kids and that is starting to look pretty dim if she wins this!
I still have to tell the boyfriend! very very very scared about that! he's going to freek! and I'm going to feel even worse than I do now!

it is me who is afraid of him, he's had a lot on his plate in the last 14 days from a death in the family to a big family thing going down (he's feeling pretty raw) and now me...he's not good with controlling his anger when it explodes ..he's very mild tempered 99.9 % of the time but when he gets angry look out! he's all ready busted down our front door once and another door at his parents place! and I know he will be angry about this! but his anger I think? will be more towards the school than me, but I just don't know how it will manifest itself... it's just I 'm terrified of angry men ...brings back some bad childhood memories! So I need to psych myself up for it!
Thanks Sis. I appreciate it :D

Rowan, my heart goes out to you .
If you were in the states, I would say go directly to the state board that regulates nursing and file a very big complaint against both the person and the facility. Do not take it on the chin. Some states here are incredibly understanding, and will go to bat for you. (And here, the state has the final word, not the nurse or facility, since they are the ones that give them their operating license).
I once appealed something to my state (to allow children where I was living, since I simply could not afford to move, as rent control protects you only so long as you don't move, and if you do, it DOUBLES!). I did not expect any help. But lo and behold, a week later I got a very nice letter saying they would do something about it. And they did! A month later, kids were allowed so we could have children.
I guess you call them provinces there, but perhaps they too are in charge of dispensing medical licensing (or your fed govt). Please remember to try that avenue. There is nothing so humbling to a haughty person than to receive what they have given by somebody bigger than they.
Wishing you the best,
Muffit
