Hey everyone,
Just have to drop a quick line and announce that Michael miles artistry has been too busy the past year and we are still not caught up as of yet. Been in galleries and expanding my artistry business with blueprinting and scratch building masters to mold and introduce to the Battlestar collectors world. Our models are reasearched from hundreds of photos and exact measurements are sized just right. Blueprinted and then of to be molded. The first one to be offered is the studio scale desanto viper. Lots of photos and research went into this and here she is about finished. She will be more affordable in price compared to the other resin kits and the detail is correct. It will feature pilot with upgraded warrior helmet and detailed interior that we suggest that you fiber optic. The price $ 95.00
The shuttle will be 10 inches in length and will feature quite a bit of the major details but left a bit bare for the modelers to add their own details and have fun searching out the various parts to complete. We are also going to offer a 29inch galactica, more on this, with pics later. Pre-orders will soon be taken on e-bay through seller i.d. zombiebutt. Read our rating and you’ll know for fact that we deliver the goods. See you on the launch deck!
See ya on the launch deck. :D http://tinypic.com/fy1gkx.jpg

Is this an officially licensed product ? Will you apply to Tom DeSanto to have it endorsed ?
Also, what is the art under the Viper is then first picture ? The detail on the lady's face is excellent.....please tell us more.....
Best of luck......

Hi Ernie... I don't know anything about licensing but I do know something about the painting. BlueSquad2001 is the boyfriend I mentioned in my first post. He is working on that painting right now, sitting directly behind me. It's something he made up to look like a poster to advertise for the fleet. He got the idea from old WWII recruit posters and thought it would be fun to make one for BG. He thinks he will have it finished by 9:00 tonight but I think he is being too optimistic! LOL! He also started an oil painting last year but never finished it. When he gets ready, he'll get it back out. I'll ask him to post an image of this painting when he gets it completed. The woman in the painting now has hair and part of her outfit is done.
Thanks for your interest. This really keeps BlueSquad2001 motivated to do more.

Thanks for posting the image. This is an amazing talent you (or your boyfriend?) have. Have you ever considered creating a comic or animation ?

Thanks Ernie... It's my boyfriend's work, not mine. I wish I had that kind of talent. I paint too but nothing like this. One time we thought he was going to get to do a comic, but it turned out to be somebody just trying to rip him off. Maybe he could answer your questions better than I am, but he is busy painting right now. LOL...

Best of luck...... And Ernie, there are no (OFFICIALLY LICENSED) Galactica model products available period at this point and time. You can visit StarShip Modeler.com and buy StudioScale Vipers $150.00 and Cylon Raiders $350.00 as well as a few other things related, but they are ALL fan made. That's why they are cast in resin, but so much higher detail and quality than MASS produced and licensed kits. Get ready for your DeSanto pre-order... :rotf: WE DELIVER!

Ah yes... yours goes straight instead of curved like mine does-
http://www.colonialfleets.com/gallery/data/media/2/desanto_viper0.jpg
The studio scale doesn't have it fully defined yet, but shows a hint of curvature (lower left corner)
http://www.colonialfleets.com/gallery/data/media/7/desanto-prod-viper-model.jpg
While the full scale model doesn't have it defined at all yet
http://www.colonialfleets.com/gallery/data/media/7/desanto-prod-viper-build08.jpg
And the painting does not show it at all, so it's pretty much useless

A 29-inch Galactica?
Wow, that's over 1/3 the size of the filming miniature.
I want one, now!
BlueSquad2001
November 22nd, 2005, 04:01 PM
We have gotten started on the 29 inch as well as the 40inch and we are deciding which to do? I want to do both, but keep costs down. The 29 inch will be priced at $300.00 not bad for an enormous undertaking such as the Galactica. We have to make sure of the details as well as the correct angles. The 40 inch will be around 375.00 per model, but that is real heavy resin casting. :salute:
And yes, these are LOW PRICED! Most people would charge many times more than this. :wtf:

All the stuff I'm making... the props and odd bits of ephemera... are all being done because I CAN and I want to
keep the original series alive for the next crop of fans who come along. That, and making sure that the powers-that-be aren't
ignoring the fandom alltogether. When a fandom keeps generating cool stuff like those models, it goes LONG way to keeping old folks interested
and attracting new folks to the fandom.
Good work there!
BTW: I prefer the curve.

What you're doing Gordon, and the other BSG TOS websites, and anyone working on art, or stories or fan films are all keeping the dream alive.
You had to be around at the time, but before Galactica, there was nothing of that scale on TV, not Star Trek, Land of the Giants, anything. BSG was an event, and something that's never really been attempted since.

But, does it go from zero to .15C in less than 6 microns? More importantly, does it have plenty of cargo space and does it come with a 6-disk CD player?
You just can't go from an Shuttle to a Viper without keeping some of the creature comforts, now can you?

Hi Jeffrey,
This is Terri posting for Michael. He's working on the last wing and said we will cast the wings and vertical stabilizer very soon, like in a few minutes! I'm going to help make the mold (multitasking while doing laundry!)
Like most projects, this is taking longer than expected. I think Michael is usually too optimistic when he talks about how long something will take for him to finish because he truly enjoys it so much that he doesn't realize how much time is passing!
Gotta run downstairs and add fabric softener and then will make a mold I hope!

The molds are being formed and here are silly pics of such. Think I'll do the next wing standing in mold box instead of flat, give your opinion of whih you think would be best. ;)

I feel a little bit better now about being able to actually contribute to something! This is our first time to make a mold and since the supplies were so expensive, I was worried about wasting even a drop! It's great to get that "first time" over with so that we now know what to expect. I estimated how much we'd need by calculating the volume of the box itself. The actual piece being molded is just a wing, so I ignored its displacement of volume for the sake of being conservative. My estimates told me that we'd have barely enough mixture to do the vertical stabilizer mold. After Michael poured it in there was a little bit left. Then I remembered that he had made a little box of greeblies to mold, so I ran and got it and he filled it up. Even if the greeblie box hadn't been ready, Michael would have had time to make one because there's a 30 minute working time for the molding material.
Next we'll do the actual casting of the parts and I'm a little nervous about it working out. The work time after mixing the liquids together is very short. Again, I don't want to waste any because the stuff is so expensive (even after getting it at 40% off.) I do expect the casting to be easier than the acutal making of the mold.
Michael will post pictures of the casted vertical stabilizer, hopefully later tonight! ;)

Yes I did. I had done too much reading about other products and for some reason thought that the resin we were working with had a pot life of 3 minutes - not 90 seconds! It turned white while we were still pouring. It's quite amazing to watch it change so rapidly!
Last night I ordered supplies in bulk and the new stuff has a longer pot life. I think it's around 5-7 minutes. Of course the set-up time takes hours rather than minutes, but that's a sacrifice we're willing to make. I also believe that with a longer set-up time more bubbles can escape before it sets. :nervous:

Something you can do to extend your pot-life is to actually chill one half of the resin in the refrigerator. The big trouble with this is the condensation caused by the warm-up inside the container when you take it out. urethanes DO NOT LIKE moisture. Atmospheric moisture is what causes most resins to go bad after a while. ALSO: Have you been privvy to my article concerning urthane resins? If you haven't I will post the text here. Urethanes are your friend as long as you respect them. But if you don't, you WILL get ill.

Here's the low-down: Urethane, when it cures, releases Isocyanate gasses. Sound familiar? That's because the root word is Cyanaide... poison.
Isocyanates are long-term poisons that build up in your system. Your body will try very hard to get rid of them, but they don't like to go easily. Exposure to them (even regulated exposure) wil eventually cause them to build up in your body and make you ill.
The amount that it takes varies from person to person, and the time it takes to build up in your body varies as well. But over time, you WILL develop a sensitivity to them.
Typical symptoms include: shortness of breath (induced athsma), skin rashes, itching, throat irritation, dizziness, and oddly enough, back pain. Other, less obvious effects are irritability, short temper, and even paranoia.
But like I mentioned, this all varies from person to person.
Example: My boss Dave got a massive exposure to urethane several years ago. He can no longer be in the building when we pour resins or he immediately goes into athsmatic arrest. I have been exposed over the course of 12 years. I get skin rashes, back pains, and athsmatic attacks when I'm exposed. But my boss Mike can work with the stuff unprotected after 12 years and has no obvious effects. On the extreme end, I personally had a friend who committed suicide after long-term chronic exposure. First he tried to commit suicide by police officer. Eventually he just did it himself. His diaries indicated a long-term paranoia that coincided almost perfectly with his unprotected exposure to urethane. Did he have other problems? Yes. But I sincerely believe that the situation was spurred on by chemical influence.
So, how to avoid all this? Easy:
1) get yourself a NIOSH approved filter mask with the biggest, most ass-kicking filter cartridges you can buy. Make sure your catridges are the highest rated ones you can get. They won't completely protect you, but they will help limit the exposure through your lungs.
2) set up your workspace so that you are cross-ventilating to the OUTDOORS. This means you need to have a CONSTANT flow of air running through your space. Clean air must enter at one end and fume-y air must be vented out the other end. Be sure you don't vent right into an area that supplies air to another house or building. Your fumes will just get sucked up and deposited into their space.
3) always wear latex (or if you're allegic to latex) nitrile gloves when handling the urethane components or the mixed combo. Not only can Isocyanates enter your body through the lungs as fumes, but they also affect you through the skin. Be sure to get yourself some of those disposable tyvec jumpsuits they use when they paint cars. It'll keep you from wrecking your clothing.
4) Use and Do all the stuff above. Also: DO NOT do this IN YOUR HOUSE. There is a reason why these things are called "garage kits" by hobbyists. Its getting to the cold seasons of the year, so I suggest you make a spot in your garage and set up space-heaters to keep the place warm. PLEASE... I'm BEGGING YOU. DON'T DO THIS IN YOUR BASEMENT OR HOUSE.
5) If you feel like you've started to show any of the signs of overexposure, you need to get away from the stuff. Take a break from it for at least two weeks. In the mean time, you can exercise and pump your lungs good and hard...run, bike, whatever. Drink ALOT of water. It helps your body get rid of the toxins. And best of all, get thee to a sauna. Especially after you workout. A sauna will force you to sweat alot and encourage your body to expell the toxins that way.
Now, about your resin. If you weren't given a MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) when you bought it, you should go back there and get one. Every chemical available to the populace MUST have an accompanying MSDS. It is the law. Read the MSDS carefully and it will probably tell you the make-up of your paint system. If you have any questions at all, just pick up the phone and call the manufacturer. They will be happy to answer your questions about the specific product.
Last but not least: Don't think you're invulnerable because it doesn't affect you right away. Use the protection from the start and you WILL stay healthy.
-Gordon

Thank you Gordon... I really appreciate the article. What I can't believe is that there was no mention of this in the instructions that came with the molding and casting kits!
I didn't think anything of it when I had an asthma attack later because I've been having them a lot lately anyway. They had almost stopped but then I got pneumonia earlier this year and my lungs haven't been right since.
Last night after we did the casting, I vacuumed the whole house, upstairs and down, cleaning baseboards, under the beds, closets, etc. I figured that overexerting myself had caused the attack. I'm sure the fumes didn't help any.
Thanks again for the article! :salute:

I too suffer from asthma, so you have my complete sympathy and understanding. In the UK asthma sufferers can have a pneumonia injection that lasts 10 years when they have their flu injection.
Can't you not have the same thing in the US?

I recognize one "greebly".....
It's on the bottom just left of center. It's white, with four round bits with a stick-like projection holding them all together.
It's an antenna from the Apollo Spacecraft Service Module. I built so many of those when I was a kid, I would know that thing anywhere!

You are very correct. Had to hunt like hell to find this kit. It was used as a part on top of the colonial blaster, toward the rear of it. In the pic, there are tons of Viper parts, shuttle, battlestar, cylon raider, pistol...and the list goes on and on and on...... ;)

That's all a part of what I was trying to warn you guys about w/the stuff being considered hazardous, especially for disposal purposes. Don't even think about sanding the stuff w/o some sort of face mask and eye gear! It gets in the lungs and you can cough it up hours or even days later. I know of a couple of guys who've said they were sick w/teh stuff and continued blowing it out their nose for the better part of a week once.

Good Morning Sandy! Still working on the Viper. Adding final detail to the aft engine section, and detailing the ribs on the cans. Can you send the items discussed over the phone earlier? It would be a FANTASTIC addition to this Advanced Viper. :D :salute:
BTW....can anyone help with studio scale Cylon Raider Dimensions? What might it be in comparison to TOS scale? Wing length tip to tip, Front to back? Or if one of you CGI guru's could do a size comparison sketch of a raider to the studio scale, would be a big help. :wtf:

That looks about right given the comparisons of the cockpit but it also brings up the question of just how this thing would get down the launch tube. Given DeSanto's premise, that they were built in secret and then launched in a surprise move to counter the new Cylon threat, the launch tubes would have had to have been dismantled and rebuilt for each of these.
A nitpick to be sure but I think of these things.
Very nice work on the model however.

Hey, uh..Sandy, where do you get these stories? I've never heard or read them anywhere. Where can I read the story? Oh and by the way, the ideas on what you said was thought provoking. But...this viper is not that much different to TOS viper. Although yes, the stabilizer is taller and the wings farther out, I would think that only minor changes would be made to the launch tubes? Maybe I'm wrong about this. But it's gonna be a cool kit. When I began the assembly of the components, I was so thrilled that they all fit just right, and looks about dead on to the DeSanto model we've all seen pics of. I can't wait to do a resin build-up and paint and detail this thing for our add. Oh also, the viper is a little over 15 1/2". Exact measurements in a little while, when I get around to it. I've created the markings in the same style as TOS, but have added alterations and new emblems to be placed on her, that I think will have die hard fans very pleased. I hope. :D

Yet, while his fellow humans have reveled in food, drink, and endless pleasure, Orin has prepared for such a disaster. In an apparently foolish act, he rallies the remaining crew and powers up the damaged Galactica.
Swinging the vessel about, he maneuvers her to engage the threatening Basestar. The new Cylon command ship easily outmatches the weathered Galactica, but Orin has a secret. He has developed a new generation of Viper fighters that he has kept hidden from the Council of the 12. These launch from the Galactica and engage the advanced Cylon raiders. They prove to be as effective in their design as anything the Cylons have. Unfortunately, there are too few of them to completely turn the tide of battle. The Colonial warriors inflict serious blows to the Cylon fighter fleet but the basestar's firepower is overwhelming.

As for the model itself, I think you have the dimensions correct. My comment was more technical for the planned story and original design not on the work you're doing. Like I said, its a nitpick.

According to Roger Sides' article (he used to own a lot of the models and props) in Sci-Fi & Fantasy Models Magazine, the Cylon Rider model was 17 inches wide, 12 and a quarter inches long and 3 and a half inches deep, making it 1/35th scale.

I'll start off by admitting that I know VERY little about designing a starship....BUT...I was thinking that having the gun ports so close to the cockpit would disrupt the pilots vision...I mean if the pilot is using the cockpit windows for any "line of sight" flying and shooting, that the muzzle flash would really mess him up.....just a thought....anyway.....LOVE the TOS Viper parked behind the "newer"version.....Great looking models....don't think that I'll be able to afford them...heavy bummer :salute:

With respect, I think the only area that the DeSanto Viper "doesn't work" in the launch tubes is the vertical stabilizer. I agree w/Michael that it might be too tall for the cutouts that we see in the launch tubes. I re-watched a couple of TOS episodes today specifically to look for that and there's plenty of room around the engines and wings, by the looks of things. The DeSanto Viper that Michael has made lines up nicely w/the Studio Scale TOS Viper he's got accept for the vertical stab height.
Just sayin' and not trying to start a feud. :salute:

NEWS..... :viper: ....NEWS..... :viper: ....NEWS ! ! !
This is beyond what one would call AWESOME!
TOM DESANTO HAS TAKEN AN INTEREST IN MY VIPER MODEL!
Here's the truth of it from Commander Taggert and Peter Noble.
I don't know if this was too forward of me, but I sent a picture of your
DeSanto Viper to Tom DeSanto via my fellow cylon.org co-owner (Commander Taggart).
Tom says it's "awesome" btw.
Anyway, I let him know you're doing the DeSanto Raider next and if he had
any more picture other than the one at our website.
Tom says he'll try and find it but if you want him to talk you through the
design his office number is %$$$$$$$..
Hope this helps.
Best,
Peter
And then more information fromPeter.
Tom's exact words were:
> Hey Bill that is awesome and I will help whatever way
> I can. I will look for the other artwork i have or if
> they want I can squueeze in some time to talk them
> through the design.
and:
> If you want you can give him my office number and I
> can talk him through it while i am tracking down thse
> images.
This gets better here with a note this a.m. from Commander Taggert.
I can confirm that everything Peter told you is legit
Like you, Tom is an artist... and I'm sure he was legitimately impressed by the quality of your work-in-progress model. Universal never got around to making a complete one, eh? So... this is the first time, I guess, he's seen his vison realized this far?
This is beyond anything I was imagining when I set out to do this project. And thanks from my heart to Peter Noble and Commander Taggert! I am very appreciative for both of your interest in my model as well as Tom DeSanto. The messages above are only portions of information that recieved, and can't give the rest naturally. Will post a complete story after my talk with Tom...right here.
On the models progress. I've been finishing the aft engine area (where all the piping and detail are) and designing a new added feature that will knock your socks off. The 1st ever studio scale viper with a canopy that opens and closes. The opening mechanism features telescoping and pivoting arm that raises and lowers smoothly, and has a snug fit. This is cool, and I developed this detail on one of my TOS studio scale vipers, to work out problems before offering it with me DeSanto viper. Pics are coming in a few minutes. Stand by! You're gonna love this. :D
BlueSquad2001
December 3rd, 2005, 09:28 AM
What will one unique feature be on the DeSanto Viper, that no other Studio Scale Viper has?
An opening and closing canopy!
I used one of my TOS studio scale vipers to be the designs tester. After 6 hours, of drawing measuring angles and pivot points as well as where the joints would be. And after a few failed attempts of trying to get this feature to work smoothly, but also reflect the detail of the original mechanism of the full size filming viper, it is a success!
This will be featured on the DeSanto Vipers and the detailing potential has just sky rocketed. I think alot of you will want to light up the instruments with fiber optics and backlit scanner. ;) I know I will.
Here's the prototype pics. We have recieved our casting supplies and will begin making the molds on Mon. Will continue to keep you all updated. Back to the bench now for me. :D

I love the functional design for the cockpit canopy. I've seen plenty with just a straightforward hinge, but never one that telesopes to make it fit right and mimic the actual canopy from the full size versions.
Keep up the excellent work!

I'm really enjoying the updates and the pics. That's great news about being able to talk to Tom DeSanto about the design (I'd be on the ceiling if it was me!).
I love the functional design for the cockpit canopy. I've seen plenty with just a straightforward hinge, but never one that telesopes to make it fit right and mimic the actual canopy from the full size versions.
Keep up the excellent work!
Best,
Bryan
Gemini and Griffworks, I really appreciate the compliments on this project. And it's just too cool that Tom DeSanto is excited about it, and that I'll talk with him in greater detail in the coming week about many things Galactica. I'll be sure that I get his personal approval on these models and the upcoming DeSanto Raider kit. It'll be a blast talking with the man about his designs and his artistry. Maybe see if I can ask him to get a photograph holding the custom build-up that I am preparing for him, after all the creator must own one of these babies. :D
For his compliments, Terri and I are dedicating a very special viper to him as a gift of thanks and appreciation. :salute: :colonial:

Congratulations BlueSquad!
That's pretty frakin' awesome that you're getting to make the first real honest to goodness DeSanto viper and the man himself has taken an interest. What a great slice of Galactica history you've carved out for yourself. And best of all, it looks like you're rising to the challenge in a big way.
Way to represent the power of the fan! :salute:

Thank You Fragmentary. I am HONORED! I now know that there was a reason now that I did'nt just throw the pieces of this viper in the trash a few months ago. I am preparing right now my letter to DeSanto that will briefly address to him my take on this project, and I'm sure I'll uncover all sorts of pics and drawings that no one has yet to see on the net anywhere. He really wants to help with this, andguide me thru it all. When I recieve further details about this viper from him, if I feel like I just have to add that particular detail to the model, I'll be a day or two late casting it, but the cool thing is that it'll be details straight from the creator him self....and that is priceless. :salute:

Last night I did some work on setting up and getting organized in hopes that we would start making molds today. I will try to take pictures of the process if anybody is interested. I don't want to bore anybody with too much information though!
Michael and I both appreciate the words of encouragement and all the helpful suggestions that people have sent to help us. This has been a lot of work and is really motivating to know that there are people out there that want to see the project reach completion. :salute:

PROGRESS REPORT!
I had actually wanted to write this last night before I retired for the day. But I was exhausted. I had worked on this the entire day. It is 7:15 a.m. here now and I feel like letting all of you who are waiting to see the finished casting know what is happening. I'm having tea, and waking up! :rotf:
I know that we have delayed the molding process because some interesting points has arisen on how to do this most effectively for the cleanest castings possible. I had thought I had a way figured out of how to begin, and BIG THANKS goes to Jesse Meyers for spending alot of time with me on the phone long distance thinking this through, and looking at pics sent to him, just to help me mold this the best way. Mark Bradley has also been here for me, even though he is very busy and hard to reach, helping with this project. Also thanks goes to Spcglider, for helping through long distance calls and taking time from his busy life to help with the canopy molding. The drawings are fantastic ! Thank you all so much. :salute: And Peter Noble...Thanks, and you know why! ;)
Here it is. The ONLY thing left to do, is to finish detailing the aft engine section, you know...where all the piping is. And it is all complete and ready to mold the components. But, the nose section will be molded and cast in resin and from that first molding, the panel lines and final details will be cut into it, another mold made and voila! But this whole day will be spent, that is until the evening, detailing the engines and getting that nose ready.
Thank you all, and you have my e-mail address and number if you want to talk, give suggestions, or whatever you need. You know I answer swiftly. ;)
Thanks for all of your help on this.

NEW MARKINGS AND PICS
This took time to come up with, but these are the "DEFINITIVE" marking for the Mk.IV Advanced Viper. I hope you all like 6this, as it keeps us closely in touch with the original series but adds to it but with noticable differences. I only have photoshopped this and added different weatherings to the engines to give myself an idea of where it needed to go. The are the final markings. Let's see if anyone can figure out what the small emblem is behind the stabilizer stripe? :D

:colonial: NEWS ON DESANTO PROJECT!!! :colonial:
It is 1:04p.m. here in Ark, and Terri (warriorchemist) has just recieved a phone call from none other than Tom Desanto himself! :salute:
He took time out of his busy schedule of working on the upcoming Transformers movie to call me about the DeSanto Viper project among other things of interest to us both. These are just a few things that he made conversation about.
He said " I could'nt be more thrilled about the project, it looks really awesome." concerning his viper, and Advanced Cylon Raider that is coming up. Tom, I say that still with respect for him, because at first thing in the converstaion and introductions, he asked that I call him "Tom" anyway he stated that he is honored that I am making the masters of his viper and raider, and that he will be sending me never before seen images anywhere of these ships for help in my masters. I told him that we were about to begin the first castings of the viper and that we were going to honor him with a fully lit and built ship as a gift to him, for helping me personally in this endeavor. He tried to refuse saying that he did'nt want to except that from us, that he was just thrilled at my photos and that I was making them a reality. :salute: We insisted, and he finally accepted!
He gave me the thumbs up and his full approval of the projects, and he agreed happily to be photographed holding my viper and raider models for all the BSG fans to see. Tom wants everyone to be informed that he is behind my effort all the way. I have been given approval by Tom over these models of his and I and Terri are HONORED!!! We are thrilled to have this kind of backing, from the creator of this viper and raider. And we are overly thrilled to have been given so many minutes of his busy day.
He told me, right before we got off the phone, and I quote him respectfully.
"Tell all the Battlestar Galactica fans, that I have not given up, and am still working on getting a continuation project going. I'm still a big Galactica fan and am still going at it."
It was an honor to be told this, and a (serious) honor to be asked to be the one to get that message to you all here at the Fleets 1st! :salute:
He was very cool to talk with, and shared his personal e-mail information and we agreed to keep in touch and become better friends. Terri had fun talking with him also, and chatted about Hollywood. :D :wtf:
Very special thanks to Commander Taggert, and Peter Noble, that helped this become a reality and more than an honorable, experience.
You all are now getting the fully ( APPROVED ) DeSanto Mk.IV Viper. COOL! :salute:

Tom is having (many drawings) scanned at this time to e-mail and possibly some larger that he'll snail mail to me, on the viper and cylon raider. I'm waiting to see the final renderings for the viper and the warriors outfit, before finalizing my master to be molded. It will be a short wait to hear back from Tom, he's real thrilled about it. As for the landing gear, have actually already begun designing and concept building of this idea about 2 months ago, I think. But it was just too consuming at the time, and got back to priorities :(
But, who knows. I hope that I can work out the details and include this. Would all that pre-ordered be willing to give a little bit more time so that this could be accomplished? I'm already working on and opening canopy system to be built into the model. It's becoming a very ambitious project, and now that Tom is in full gear and watching it all unfold, I'm under pressure! :D

BlueSquad2001.......that's great to know.
My contact with him was about my idea of making a special edition version of 'The Return of Starbuck' without the Galactica1980 content. Instead it would include Continuation era scenes. You can read more about my idea in another thread in this forum.
However, I am concerned that anything I did, if it progressed to an official release, might cause minor continuity issues with his Continuation. In some ways I wonder if it is best to sit back and be a passenger and wait to see what he delivers.....but if we all did that many things would never get done. So that project, and my website (www.battlestarfanfilms.com) are my attempts to contribute to the BSG galaxy.
You've chosen a very different route. The reproduction of Continuation models....and again we see the excitment in Tom and the fanbase when someone comes along and makes part of a Continuation possible......

It's great that things are coming together this way. It's pretty cool to get to sit on the sidelines and watch this all play out. I'm eager to see what new light Tom's additional references might shine on the viper design. Of course, you've got to hope that it's nothing that will undermine any of the work you've done so far, although I'm sure that would have come up in the conversation with him if it would have... but on the other hand, you've got to kind of hope that there's a little extra something hidden in there that you can be the one to bring to light.
Man, I gotta be honest, part of the fun of this is just hearing how excited you are about this whole project. It really is infectious! Add to that, hearing that Tom is excited about it too, and it's probably the most interesting thing happening in world of Galactica at the moment.

The last 2 days has been nothing but excitement to the point of draining. LOL! Here are 2 parts of the e-mail just sent to us by Tom. And I really now know that BSG TOS will see the continuation as planned. Keep the faith! Right Peter? ;)
Tom DeSanto e-mail to Mike and Terri
"Thanks to both you and Michael for taking the time to
build the Viper. I really think Michael is a
wonderful artist and loved all his work particularly
the flying tiger painting just great stuff. I am
including some images which may help, including the
warrior flight suit and helmet designs. "
"Hope you enjoy the images and I am excited to put the
finished model on display in my office next to my
Cylon statue. Looking forward to seeing you both in
LA soon and saw your picture you both are a very cute
couple. Much happiness to you both always and thanks
for being part of those who believe in the show.
All the Best,
Tom
The images that I have been entrusted with are astounding to say the least! The DeSanto Viper that will be made will be to his approval, and we have decided to create sculpts of his pilot suit designs, figures will be male and female warriors. With color charts to accurately paint them. Tom will love this. :salute: I hope to continue stirring the excitment in him and his creativity I pray will become infectious also, for all fans! :colonial:

All the options you are mentioning seem interesting and will definitely add to the model.
I have a concern about all the options; will it up the price considerably?

Hey Barry.
We were at one point considering the option of landing gears with the model, but because the master was so close to completion, it was canned for the time. The only extra option that this will feature, unlike other vipers is the canopy being able to raise and lower. We will probably send the necessary components with instructions on how to instal this option if the modeler wishes to. But this is the only definate option that it will have right now. Thanks Barry. :salute:

b) If Mr. DeSanto is reading, please note that I'd be happy to help with all aspects of a continuation project (I run a special effects studio here in Minneapolis, hint hint hint, and can make hand props at the drop of a hat).

Last I heard from BlueSquad2001 & WarriorChemist, there were some Real World things that came up for BlueSquad2001 that are going to keep him "out of pocket" for a little while. Emergency type stuff, which is why we've not seen anything new in... what, a week? I'm sure once things have settled down we'll be getting reports again. I'll give them a call in a day or two after giving them some more time.
I know that they've got all the mold-making materials they need, but that BlueSquad2001 was going to make a pull of the main fuselage section so he could do the scribe work there. Aves Epoxy putty - or whatever it was that he used to build it up - doesn't take well to scribing, as it cracks and flacks badly. Resin, on the other hand, is a fairly decent medium to work with if you take it slow and don't push down too hard.
Hey, felgercarb happens, right? ;)
There's also the saying that Slow and Steady Wins The Race. I've no doubts that once complete, it'll be awesome. Just give the time for it to be finished right the first time. :)

Hi guys, WOW!!!!!!! Those castings look nice, not a lot of clean up there. I am guessing the pre orders are going out next week sometime? Out of curiosity, do you have orders following the pre orders? These seem to be fairly popular. You're doing a Desanto Raider as well?? Thanks for that, more groveling and begging I need to do to my wife! I can't wait for my Viper, now that I have seen the finished result and I look forward to seeing the Cylon Raider and Galactica. You do realise of course, you will have to do a Cylon Basestar thats' bigger and more detailed than the old monogram kit! Keep the awesome work coming! Cheers, Chris :Nsalute:

Thanks for all the great feedback... We find it energizing and it helps us work harder. He's in the bathroom right now making the last casting for the night. When I was ordering supplies, I ordered a bottle of black coloring to experiment with. Michael had told me when he was building the master that it was easier to see errors on a darker surface, which is why he primed the master between doing all the details and smoothing. He just did one casting with a bit of the black coloring added, and it has turned out to be a nice primer-gray color. It is easier to see the panel lines and rivets, as well as the greeblie details. There are a few bubbles that are more visible too, but we intend to repair these before sending out any kits. We want them to look great for the people who have been kind enough to trust us.
Yes, we have gotten more orders after the pre-orders, and will have to order more supplies soon. We've found that the suppliers aren't too fast on shipping, so we have to be one step ahead with the ordering so we won't get behind. I'm sure as we get more experienced, we will be able to put these out a lot faster. It takes time to develop an efficient system, even though we've tried to be as organized and methodical as we could.
I think the most difficult thing left to do is to get the pilot sculpted so he can be molded and cast in resin. I hope Michael doesn't make any female pilots, because knowing him, their chests wouldn't fit under the canopy. :girl:

Just to clarify......Tom told you that his Continuation would have included female Cylons ?
If so...that's a very interesting idea. One that I had never considered.
I might speculate that if Cy (from The Return of Starbuck) returned to a Cylon Empire whether having seen genders at work...the development of Cylon women was drawn from his experiences ?
Cool pictures.......

I was perusing the forum and was again reading WarriorChemist's "rude guy" thread when Mrs. Dawg came in and read over my shoulder (she thinks he was rude, too, BTW). I showed her this thread as I explained to her what was going on.
Understand that Mrs. Dawg is not a huge fan of Battlestar Galactica (although she shares my low opinion of GINO). But even she saw the design difference in the Viper models you guys are doing and GINO's, and recognized them as from the DeSanto production. (She asked "how old is he, anyway? Surely not old enough to know the difference.")

And Gordon... you figured out the water heater secret! Oh no! ;) Just kidding, but what is an X-wing cannon?

I will, WC, and thank you.
GINO = Galactica In Name Only.
It refers to the Moore/Eick de-creation (*juvenile snicker*) currently running on Sci-Fi.
I also had a GINO's Pizza in my neighborhood when I was young. The pizza was OK, but the hot pastrami sandwiches were to die for (this place pre-dated Quiznos by about 20 years). The place is now a Chinese restaurant....

:viper: UPDATE :viper:
We are molding the base, as well as the cannons, rear of the canopy section, starboard wing, and that will complete the major components of the model. I'll photograph all parts together, then begin posting pics of my build-up progress. There will be some bubbles, as well expected. But rest assured that with care taken in assembly, it will be a great addition to TOS line of vipers. I'll document the short comings when I begin the build-up so that all the :barf: out there will know that any complaints, will be pre-noted here 1st! :D
Also, we DO and WILL make repairs to bubbles and fill them and smooth them before shipping. We want you all to know that we care in what we create. :salute:

:colonial: UPDATE!! BASE COMPLETE!! :colonial:
Here is the final pic of the base that I built about a month ago, and just finished it. Originally, this was made for TOS Studio Sacle by Jesse Myers, as I wanted somthing different. The Blue Squadron emblem makes a fine base, but I did'nt like any of the aftermarket emblem bases, as they all looked like the pyramids were ALL out of proportion. :wtf:
So, here is my take on this, and the pyramids are at different thicknesses of styrene, to give it a little more depth! :D

More pics soon, as we near total completion of this long waited for viper. :salute:

Base looks awsome, can't wait to see the final model with the base.
Will look good next to my JM viper, if I ever get around to building it.
So many great kits and no real time to build.
later, Barry.

Here are pics of the fully completed laser cannons. I had to wait and see all the pics that I was sent, before I could begin to scratch all the proper details. Theres alot going on on these cannons. Pumps, tubes, vents and all that stuff that might really be there in real life. But they look menacing :viper: :rage: :salute:

And Gordon... you figured out the water heater secret! Oh no! ;) Just kidding, but what is an X-wing cannon?
In Star Wars (The original...not that junk George's been pushing out his butt lately), the cannons mounted on the tips of the wings of the X-wing fighters have alot, stylistically, similar to these new Desanto versions.
I cannot stop it. My brain WILL draw similarities between objects. Just a programming fault. Pay it no mind.
Now...to wade into the "rude conversation" thread.
See you there.

Hey Dilbertman!
I'll have some pics up tomorrow, during the day. I'm just taking a breather from this tonight, I've been at it for 7 days a week since I re-started this project. And having to redo things since DeSanto got involved. And with the raider project he's helping with, it's going to be on the tail of this viper. And that means even more hours and days and hopefully, not too many weeks. :D
