When does Griff return?
Sandy
Hey Sandy!
Griff will return shortly before May is over, but I forget exactly when. I'll find out from him again. He said he has tried numerous times to log onto the fleets and say hello, but the military has this site blocked because it was labled (pornographic!) No kidding! That's why he can't log on here. I'm sure he'll tell you all the whole story when he gets back. :wtf:
In the mean time. We have gotten together a few boxes for shipping, and are about ready to do that. Terri (Warriorchemist) says that we'll ship on Thurs as that is our main shipping day for all of our commission art works, and theres no sense in making numerous trips. It'll be THUR...Finally you all get your vipers!!! :rotf: :D
I'm thrilled!
And I've also had pointed out to me that I had forgotten one last photo set that was taken of the final viper details. And after searching, I thought I had posted them, but I am wrong.
So heres the pics of the final canopy design...ala Tom DeSanto! and the equipment housing directly behind the canopy, as well as the final thrusters and the seat, that no one has yet seen. Sorry, I thought that I had posted these. :D
OOOooops! :D
The canopy is the final desanto design, and the way he wants it. Explosive bolts, and atmospheric sensors. :salute:
But, enjoy, these are nicely detailed pieces that add so much to the vipers unique evolution!
Here come your Vipers! We are proud to be sending them to you all. Look for them on e-bay soon.

Very nice.
The filters are set up to block servers that dish out certain subjects. Likely, Fleets is riding on a server that has another website that is a porn site. When this happens, the server is blocked, not the site URL so legit sites are also blacked out.
A stupid way to do it but that's how the Air Force blocked sites for years.

Lucky Thompson, 34 yrs old. Just passed away after an hour of trying to revive his heart. He was the best damn friend and one of the best hard core metal drummers that anyone could've met. As a professional musician in L.A. for over a decade, in my opinion, he should've made it by far.
I'm going forward, and will not let this stop me from my duty. I'm casting today and will ship tomorrow.
I wish Lucky, love and happiness on his never ending journey now, and will never forget.

Mike,
I know what it's like to lose dear friends quickly (and slowly for that matter). Accept the grief and know that it will pass. Not without a little pain and poignant memories, but it will pass. That's the voice of experience.
If you need to talk, you know you have plenty of symapthetic ears here on the board.

Lucky will be missed... It is so weird to think that he is no longer with us. It just doesn't seem possible, even though I'd noticed that his health appeared to be declining over the past year. He just didn't look good. Michael said he was afraid of losing his insurance over some kind of medical condition, and was hesitant to get treatment. His mother told he he was afraid to go to the doctor because he may not like what the doctor would say. It is all so sad... Lucky was a really fun-loving guy, sometimes a little too much fun for me but we are all different. He took care of his mother and now I worry very much about what will happen to her. She's all alone, as her husband passed away about 5 years ago.
Lucky liked to talk... and talk... and talk... People say that men don't like to talk on the phone, but this was not the case with Lucky. Michael and I would laugh about all the "what if" questions that Lucky liked to ask, or the hypothetical questions that were probably really about him. He was so funny.... His mother said he had a smile on his face when she viewed his body. I hope that was comforting to her, to help her know he is truly at peace now.
When I got home yesterday, Michael was still working and casting parts for the viper, taking a grief break every once in a while. I don't think he got a wink of sleep last night though. He's still trying to absorb what happened.
Thanks for all your support. You guys are great friends to have.

Jim :salute:
I talked with him too. He's been pretty cut up the last few days.
I'm going to be helping him with the last few bits of the DeViper so we can put that project to bed and he can get on with the rest of the projects he's been doing (as well as lose a little of that "Oh my ghod...its just never going to end!" karma).
I'm sure it's been a completely overwhelming time for both he AND Terri.
But hey, that's what networks are for. When one part takes a hit, the other parts step up and handle the load and make things stable. We are happy to be the Colonial Fleets Network.
Now here's a little something that I hope will not be maudlin or trite, but may help anyone who has lost someone close recently (mystical music cue here):
We are beings of energy. From the impulses that race through our synapses to the physical structure that comprises our bodies to whatever that amazing spark is that causes us to "live". The entire universe, including us, is comprised of energy.
We know that energy cannot be created nor can it be destroyed.
But for some reason, we insist on thinking about those who have recently died as "gone".
Surely, they are no longer available for us to converse with or hug or share a beer with, but just as surely according to what we know above, they cannot actually be "gone". They are still here. Part of the universe. In and around and permeating everything we know as our world.
And perhaps worlds beyond our ability to see as we are.
Make of it what you will.

I suspect if you custom your Viper designs to the buyers personal requests per se. People can expect a highly detailed beautiful Viper in return. Heck maybe i should make a request in the future then.
But i'll like two done for me though. One DeSanto Viper and one Steve Paraday "Scarlet Viper". Although i doubt you'll do the Scarlet Viper though. Beatiful as that is too, i take it you're all DeSanto far as Colonial Viper designs go!
Anyhoo just wanted to say fantastic job you've got with these mouth watering models.
I've personally left my Revell Viper unbuilt until i can get around to getting a working "Canopy" for it or be that a canopy with a Colonial Warrior in the cockpit. Perhaps pretty soon i'll pm you and ask if i can order that as well?
Anyways well done with these designs, love seeing talented artists work relating to anything TOS Galactica based.

Michael can't tell you because even he doesn't know. :wtf:
I'm the one who can tell you. :D
Mike was having troubles with the canons and the canopies. I'm helping him out with some mold-making and casting here at my facility. I have a pressure casting tank.
If he hadn't already traded his soul away for a Fender guitar, it would be mine.
I am working on it. I will have the parts cast as quickly as possible. In fact, I am workig in-between work (real, honest to god, WORK work) projects to move the casting along in the most effacacious manner.
So the answer? Couple of weeks probably. I hope to have the cannons cast by this weekend. But then there's the canopies, shipping back to Mike, packing, etc. etc.
When you do get your kit, I promise you won't be disappointed. Please extend us your patience one more time. :salute:

Sweet! Thanks for the update Gordon
Thats cool.....I'm in the middle of super deatialing the old Monogram Viper anyways....I cut out the engines and installing cut tubes then adding the engine details so it will have the proper 3-d effect, scribing all recessed panel lines to replace the kits raised lines. Scratch building the cockpit and 50/50 MM models resin landing gear kit and scratch built....most of it is pretty useless due to being at the end of the run  and all the markings will be air brushed.....should be pretty cool...... sorry no pics yet.
Questions
1.
Will it be easy to add clear sheet to the inside of the MKII canopy?
2.
I bet this kit will be kinda heavy so any scratch built landing gear will need to be pretty gnarly......has there ever been any landing gear ideas for the DeSanto MK II?

1) Yes.
2) No idea. That's in Michael's court. I'm just molding and casting the cannons and maybe the canopies.

Thanks Jim,
It looks like the parts count including the base is around 15 total?
eBay is how I got my kit so those are the same images I have seen before.
From those photos its hard to tell that the rear seat section is a seperate part and it 'looked' as if the nose section is molded onto the engine section.
Its going to be a great kit to build.

Okay folks, here's the poop on cannons:
I have 10 sets sitting in plastic baggies on my desk. I'm getting about 2 or 3 sets done a day since I have to do them in the morning before work, during lunch, and after work. I should be done with cannons in a few more days.
Now the canopy, that's a different story.
Michael is sending me his mold which I will use in the pressure casting tank. That should fix any problems with casting the thin part. If that doesn't work, I will need to re-mold the canopy... which could take a bit since I am currently OUT of silicone. And then there's the casting situation again. So lets all hope that Mike's mold works.
For this effort, I will be taking posession of Michael's eternal soul upon completion. I'll keep it buffed up and placed on a shelf next to my Colonial Laser Pistol.

Aussieviper,
If you've just ordered a kit and Michael isn't doing a build-up for you, you should be getting your kit in the same shipment as the rest of the pre-orders as far as I know.
I just got Michael's canopy mold this morning. I made the necessary modifications and now i am casting copies as quickly as possible to help him get the orders filled.
As soon as I have all the canopies cast and rough-trimmed (probably by the end of this wek), I will pack them up with the cannons and ship them to Michael who will complete his part sets with them and hopefully get them shipped asap.
I know you guys are all waiting patiently for your kits... and for that we thank you. I'm waiting for my kit too!!! :ugh:

"Word Perfect Technical support; may I help you?"
"Yes, well, I'm having trouble with WordPerfect."
"What sort of trouble?"
"Well, I was just typing along, and all of a sudden the words went away."
"Went away?"
"They disappeared."
"Hmm. So what does your screen look like now?"
"Nothing."
"Nothing?"
"It's blank; it won't accept anything when I type."
"Are you still in WordPerfect, or did you get out?"
"How do I tell?"
"Can you see the C:\ prompt on the screen?"
"What's a sea-prompt?"
"Never mind. Can you move the cursor around on the screen?"
"There isn't any cursor: I told you, it won't accept anything I type."
"Does your monitor have a power indicator?"
"What's a monitor?"
"It's the thing with the screen on it that looks like a TV. Does it have a little light that tells you when it's on?"
"I don't know."
"Well, then look on the back of the monitor and find where the power cord goes into it. Can you see that?"
....."Yes, I think so."
"Great! Follow the cord to the plug, and tell me if it's plugged into the wall."
....."Yes, it is."
"When you were behind the monitor, did you notice that there were two cables plugged into the back of it, not just one?"
"No."
"Well, there are. I need you to look back there again and find the other cable."
....."Okay, here it is."
"Follow it for me, and tell me if it's plugged securely into the back of your computer."
"I can't reach it."
"Uh huh. Well, can you see if it is?"
"No."
"Even if you maybe put your knee on something and lean way over?"
"Oh, it's not because I don't have the right angle-it's because it's dark."
"Dark?"
"Yes-the office light is off, and the only light I have is coming in from the window."
"Well, turn on the office light then."
"I can't."
"No? Why not?"
"Because there's a power outage."
"A power... A power outage? Aha! Okay, we've got it licked now. Do you still have the boxes and manuals and packing stuff your computer came in?"
"Well, yes. I keep them in the closet."
"Good! Go get them and unplug your system and pack it up just like it was when you got it. Then take it back to the store you bought it from."
"Really! Is it that bad?"
"Yes, I'm afraid it is."

He was so close to getting killed, but death just was'nt there at the fall that minute. Some guy around 27 or so had just been killed there not more than an hour before this took place. And this guy was cutting up and yelling like a freakin' redneck. Idiot, that's all I can say. :wtf:

Viper Kit Update
Okay, first of all I want to thank all of the new friends we have made through this project, all of you, near and far. From right here in America, all the way to Austrailia and England. We love you and have enjoyed getting to know you, and talking to you personally. I also appreciate all of the e-mails and am very greatful for all of the faith and friendly support you have given me. I also want to thank all of you for the kind letters regarding the passing of my best friend, ven though some of them did not get replies, they are none the less dearly remembered and were of great value to me in that period of greif.
As of this moment, I have not heard one complaint out of any of you, with the exception of some jerks in Calif. but that is a forgotten and wasted moment.
You all have every right to feel just tired of waiting and anxious, if you do, concerning the shipment of your kit, or kits. I want you to know that we honestly feel that too. We are tired and angry, because of one thing or another going wrong, or holding the project back from shipping, I wish like hell I had'nt given all of you a shipping time, and then again another shipping time, until I was certain and had everything together and ready to go to the post office. I'm very sorry, from the bottom of my heart, that I misled anyone of you, and feel very bad about it. I really am bothered by this, and feel I must make it up to you all, and in one way or another, I will. That I can promise.
What happened? This is the question that you are all wondering and wanting to ask, but have not. This lets me know that you have faith in me and my professionalism, and I will reward that by telling you all the truth.
When I last had promised on the threads that we were about to ship, we had recieved the final batch of silicone to mold the final parts and all was proceeding well. I was excited about finally being finished and shipping these and was sure that all wuld be well. Then the molds for the canopy and guns did not turn out well, and we were forced to find a trustworthy pro that would assist us in correcting this problem, and in turn also would produce better castings of the parts. I turned to (Spcglider) as you all know and we are all fond of, to help. He did, and it was like I knew it would be, he did a terrific job molding the parts and then he even went so far as to cast many pieces of each. Thank You Gordon!
All was well, and I just knew you all were going to be surprised soon to find your kits in the mail delivery. But once again, something went wrong. And it has delayed us for over a week. Gordon accidentally, I must add, placed an incorrect zip code on the package. And it is lost in the mail system somewhere. One would think surely that the post office would take a look at the address and get it sent to the proper location. But they have yet to correct this. Gordon and I both are waiting, and I have discussed the problem with the post office, and have kept in touch with Gordon, and he has assured me, again today, that it will come back to him, or to me, one or the other. As soon as this package gets to me, this is what will happen, I will gather all the kits, box them and ship them that day, and confirm with everyone, that their order has shipped. And then we can rejoice.
I will ask all of you, to please be patient a little longer, and your wait will be rewarded. I'm certain that this will be resolved soon, and will keep after it until you all have your vipers. That you can trust. The wait will soon be over.
Let me also say that if you have any questions, regarding this issue, or any other about the viper, shoot the questions to me here and now and I'll be more than happy to put your minds at ease with a quick reply.
You all have my home e-mail, and my number. Don't hesitate to call if you need to.
Because of the nature of the project, it has been quite an out of the pocket expense to produce. And thanks to Tom Desanto for being a friend and helping me to produce a great number of kits soon to find their way to you all.
I want to say this, please be patient, you will get your kits. That is definate. We all have not gone through this production for nothing rest assured.
Thank You All!

I have been assured that, one way or another, that the package will either be delivered to Michael aftre they figure out what the proper code is, or it will be returned to me...as I put my return adress VERY clearly on every package I send out.
You all deserve apologies from me as well. I should have confirmed Michael's zip code before I sent it out. If the package comes back to me, it will be repackaged that very moment and re-sent to Michael via Fed Ex Overnight to expedite the whole thing .
I beg of you all just a bit more patience. These kits are going to be truly lovely. And I know you'll all be very happy when they get to you.
As I mentioned earlier... I'm waiting on a kit too! lol!!

UPDATE!!!!
Okay all.
Gordon called today, and gave me the info about the incorrect zip code that he placed on the package. It led to a small town in Ark, called Morrilton. A very teeny weenie whole in the wall, that I went after. I first found that there is only one post office in this town, and the second thing is that the down does not have a road by the name of mine. After contacting them, they were unsure of where the package was, and that it probably was returned to the sender, or on it's way here to L.R.
So I notified our local post office Mgr., and informed him of the problem, which he responded with the package not being there either. Upon speaking with my mail carrier, she told me what to further do, that calling the local post office will get you no where.
I called and voiced a complaint with U.S.P.S. Gov, and was informed that it would be investigated and found, and that I would hear from them by no later than Wed.
Gordon is supposed to do the same, and to also personally check with his two local post offices.
We'll know something soon enough.

I checked with both my work post office and my home post office. No package at either. I was assured, however, that the package would be delivered... most likely to you Michael. The fellow at my post office suggested calling the mistaken postal code office and ask for the back room clerk. He said that if anybody would know where it was, that guy would.

Hey Gordon, I called the Morrilton post office and they did not know anything and they acted like they had never encountered it.
I don't believe in karma. Karma=Smarma, lets figure out what to do. I've already spoken to one of my 500 pound gorillas and they await the call to arms, so to speak. Besides, we are going into a month that the package has been lost. And I for one have had enough, and am ready to blaze another trail, one that leads to the goods. I'm going to take 10, and then begin more calls.

Here's the response to my fax (yes..a telefax. Interesting how outdated technologies are still embraced by our postal service!):
Mr. Smuder:
We will continue to look for this parcel; however, it is most likely that either:
1) the Processing & Distribution Facility in Little Rock correctly routed the parcel to North Little Rock, AR; or
2) the item has already been returned to you marked as undeliverable as addressed.
Rest assured that if we find the parcel we will mark the correct Zip Code and forward to NLR.

I faxed the Distribution Center in Little Rock. No response.
I went to the USPS website this morning and filed a complaint/plea for help. But considering the convoluted nature of their website, I'll be actually surprised if what I sent to them gets to the right person.
I am acutely aware of the situation and getting more than a little concerned since the package was originally sent on June 6th... almost exactly one month ago.
I will check again with my local post offices to see if the box hasn't shown up. I suggest you do the same.

Less than a minute after receiving THAT email, I got a phone call from MY post office near my house. I just drove across town on my lunch break to check with the post office again, but now I can stop harassing them. After talking with the head honcho at the post office, he told me that after filing the 1510 form, it could take up to six months to see any results. Big help there.
This has turned into one expensive kit for me. Not that it isn't for you too, but it sure is disappointing to have it all go down like this. I end up looking like a schmuck for trying to help.
Well, if you're going to have someone else do the work, be sure to pick somebody who knows to insure a parcel.

A little story.
On June 22, 2005, I made a Paypal payment for a studio scale Cylon Raider, fully-painted and built-up.
On May 18, 2006, I made the final Paypal payment for my now completed Raider.
That's a long time to wait, but the seller kept me informed along the way and the damn thing looks pretty cool.
On the other hand I ordered Galactica shuttle from SMT and as we all know that deal never was completed and though I got my money back the whole thing was a debacle of some magnitude.
So far, I haven't had to wait as long for the Tom DeSanto kit and I'm not unduly worried because I've spoken to Michael on the phone and the project's been hit by sod's law in a major way. Sometimes felgercarb happens!
I think Michael will have a learnt a lot on completion of the kit, both the positives and negatives about such an undertaking. I'm sure everything will be taken onboard for projects two, three etc.
I know we'll all have a unique kick-ass kit at the end of the day, I guess some things are worth the wait. Mind you, I'd rather be watching season four of Tom DeSanto's BSG (Sorry Mike!). ;)
In the mean time, may I suggest that if we, the customers, have anything to say on this subject we communicate through PM, email or the phone, and when Michael's got together the remaining parts he can show the members the finished deal for everyone's enjoyment.
All the best, and long live the original Battlestar Galactica!
Peter
P.S. It would seem the post office in the US is just as inept as the one in the UK!

Hi Gordon,
No hard feelings... Terri and I appreciate all that you have done to help. You did a lot of work and I think everyone recognizes that. We did attempt to compensate you for your trouble by sending you a --------- kit, from my personal collection. As these kits become more and more scarce, their value goes up. I also agreed to assist you with sculpting a -------- head for you. This was not a freebie deal for either one of us. Terri and I looked at it as two people simply helping each other out. You did some beautiful casting with the parts, and made a zip code mistake that anyone could have made. You are not the only person who has ever sent a package uninsured. We've done it many times and have never had a package get lost. This is all very unfortunate, but thankfully everyone who has ordered has been very understanding and more than kind about all the things that have gone wrong. It's just that Terri and I are getting a little nervous that everyone's patience will run out soon. We'd also like to get all this stuff out of the house so the living room can be a living room again instead of a warehouse full of viper parts and shipping materials! Terri is getting kind of annoyed about the mess! LOL! Not only that, but I have a pile of new projects on my list of things to do, and I need to get this completed so I can have the time and the workspace to move forward. I think that we both need to keep after the post office to deliver the package. It has to be somewhere, and it seems that a box should be easier to locate than an envelope. But the worst thing that could have happened is that it was delivered to a person's house, and they simply discarded it because it was nothing they wanted to keep.
We are not sure how long it will take to find somebody else to make these parts. It is possible that by the time we find somebody, you will have returned from your trip. If that is the case, we hope that you will still go ahead and make the parts so that you and everyone else can receive their kits.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the kit and that you're going to be doing that head sculpt.
And know full well that it is not you that I am upset with. Its more being upset with myself, first for breaking my own rules and then doing something stupid that came back to bite me in the afterburners.

Michael, (and everyone else involved via purchase with this USPS fiasco)
Here's where I stand on this:
I have Chicago Wizard World coming up this weekend. I'm going to be out of town and out of communication range until next Wednesday.
If the parts haven't shown up by the time I return, I will remold and recast them from Michael's salvaged first castings.
Then we can finally drive a postally insured stake through the heart of this karma sucking vampire be-atch and move on.
Michael, sorry I didn't get back to you last night. Had my hands more than full until after midnight.

May I ask what "first" castings? You said you had nothing that you shipped everything. Now, getting together with Cobywan on this for help, and I don't EVEN, have any of the original "greeblies" to make correct new ones.

If this is nothing but business, as opposed to favors between friends, please send my full scale IL series head drawings back. I'll be happy to pay you for the insured postage. You can feel free to trash the mold bases. I can rebuild them later.
My address is:
Gordon Smuder
c/o MNFX
836 40th Avenue NE
Minneapolis,MN 55421
I don't believe you should be saddled with the work when you have paying gigs to accomplish. And you shouldn't feel like you need to complete it to repay me for the molding and casting or feel that it is an unfair burden. Obviously you've incurred costs due to my inept handling of the shipment. If you would like, I'll be happy to return the injection molded kit you sent as well, just to return us to a level.
With that, the business slate is clean.
I look forward to receiving my kit just as the rest of your customers.
A note to all: Once again, my apologies for accidentally holding up the delivery of Michael's kits. As a matter of record, I would not hesitate to do business with Mr. Miles again.
Be well, all.

Understood. But I was really only mad at having to remake the parts. Not Gordon really.
But...we are all in this together, and all who have contributed here have made their marks in the fabric of this Viper model. All have their names etched into it's creation. So for the third time of making these cannons, I bet they'll be even better than the rest, as I've learned so much from past experiences. :D
So a cooler looking Viper for all.
By the way, an update, Coby should have the parts for molding in a day or so, and then when he's finished, all kits immediately ship to you all.
I'm glad that I see the light at the end of this tunnel. No More kits though until they are ready to ship! Learned my lesson. :D

He he he h he!
Ya, once upon a time I owned a 70 Z28 in my high school days.
Those days are long since over and so is the 70 Z28.
I own a 71 plain jane Camaro with a 307 2 barrel.
She is a solid car with very little rust and solid trunk and floorboards.
After completing the build, she was hit head on and sat in a body shop for a year before I got her back.
She now sits in the garage all fixed and waiting till my daughter graduates high school.
I’ve also owned a70 Chevelle 2 door HD, but that is long gone and only a memory now.
I now drive a 2000 intrepid, newest car I've ever owned.
I like the old cars the best, they're so easy to work on and have all kinds of room in the engine compartment.
I long for the days of one vacuum hose going from the carb to the distributor.
Those days are long gone and those kinds of cars are impossible to find in the great white north.
Lots of rain and snow you know, cars can't last long in those conditions.
