Actually, check out the two triangles. They're not quite the same angle on the hypotenuse.

thats cool, i see how they did it but its still cool.
has anyone heard the missing dollar? this is how it goes. i have to tell it in a story,
three men check into a hotel for an overnight stay.
the desk clerk tells them the room is 30 dollars, they each pitch in 10 each.
later the hotel manager goes to the desk and the clerk tells him, he rented the room for 30 bucks.
the manager tells him the room only cost 25 dollars. he gives the clerk 5 dollars and tells him to return it to the 3 men.
on his way to the room, the clerk thinks he cant divide 5 one dollar bills between 3 men evenly, so he desides to put 2 dollars in his pocket and give each man 1 dollar.
now for the math.
each man had 10 dollars in the room.
the desk clerk gives them each back 1 dollar, which means they each have 9 dollars in the room.
now 9 dollars x 3 men = 27
plus the 2 dollars in the clerks pocket equals 29
where did the other dollar go?

Huh?
You added instead of subtracting at the end. Each man had 9 dollars in the room. That equals $27. Now instead of "plus 2 dollars" it's minus two dollars in the clerk's pocket. That equals $25 dollars in the room between the three.
When they each got a dollar back, it lessened the investment to $27. But they don't really have 9 dollars in the room each. You have to remember the 2 dollars in the clerk's pocket come out of that $27, not from the 3 dollars that got returned. So you subtract it, not add it to the $27.

Stray Viper,
Good job! You beat me to the explanation. Another way of saying it is:
$30 paid up front - $3 returned to the guests = $27 money out of guests' pockets. Guests paid $9 each.
$27 - $2 pocketed by clerk = $25 final cost of the room that stayed in the hotel till. Hotel manager thinks the guests paid $8.33 (round off) each, but in actuality, the clerk has pocketed the extra $0.67 (round off) x 3 persons as his $2 larceny.
Moral of the story:
Numbers don't lie, but the dishonest clerk did. The manager should fire him!

if you add it you get the right ammount, but if you mulitply it you loose the dollar.
stray viper and lucian are right and wrong, in my explanition, i do take into account the 2 dollars the clerk took. all the money is in my version but i mutiply it.
when the clerk gave each person back they went from having 10 dollars to having 9 dollars in the room each.
simple math is 9 times 3 =27 plus the two in the clerks pocket is 29.
it is a mathematical impossibility, in both ways the money is there. but in the mulitplication you loose a dollar. when you add and subtract all the money is accounted for.
add 25 room+ 3refund+ 2 clerk = 30
subtract 30 room- 3 refund- 2clerk= 25 price of room
mulitply 9x3=27+2clerk=29
there is no way to explain this question. me and my friends worked it in to the high thousands, and the money is still lost. when i asked a math professor he just smiled and said he had heard that question before and there was no answer for the multiplication.

stray viper, the reason i add the two dollars is if in the begining each person had 10 dollars in the room 10x3=30. now each person has 9 dollars in the room 3x9=27 and the reason i add is because we added what the people have vested in the room. which is 3x9=27+2=29.
like i said you are right and wrong, both ways all the money is accounted for.

Well ...
Well that is where the mistake is. You can't add the 2 to the 27. It has to be subtracted. Here's why:
They each paid 10 originally for a total of 30. The clerk returns 3 dollars each. Returns 3 dollars each. Break the money down: 9 dollars each vested in the room. 27 dollars. The other three are in their pockets, one dollar each. So it's 27 out of pocket, 3 in pocket. There's the 30 dollar breakdown. The 2 has to come out of the 27 piece of the pie; it represents the amount out of pocket. So it's 25 for the room, 2 for the clerk.
There's gotta be a better way for me to explain this, be I can visualize the answer. I'll work on wording it better.

i see what your saying, still this is a nutty arse problem. because it looks like you should add the two instead of subtracting it.

Stray Viper is one smart cookie. On another board where I knew him from before this board, he always figured out my brain teasers right off the bat when no one else could.
Ya all need to keep an eye on him...he's too clever for his own good. =D

Over the weekend, I spent a few minutes running the numbers on Tom's triangle problem. With the different angles at the toes of the triangles, the first "triangle" loses 1/2 unit of area below the hypotenus connecting the two corners of the overall triangle. When the two small triangles are switched in the second configuration, a small portion of the the resulting "triangle" sticks up past the hypotenuse of the overall triangle. It gains 1/2 unit of area. Add the two together, one gets the 1 unit square that is seen in the second configuration.
Thanks, Tom!

Thanks, 14th. But by the time everybody realizes that, it will be too late. I will have taken over the world by then!!
Hmmm ... if I take over the world, then I can fire Bonnie Hammer and Ronald Moore!

if you take over the world, it would be within your power to have them drawn and quarterd, beheaded and put on pikes.
just a thought,

Drawn, quartered, and heads on pikes???
Come on, let's be creative! If one were to have that power, we could put them in a small, empty room, together, and make them watch the new mini-series over and over and over and over and....
In addition, I'd put two bullhorns in the room so they could be sure they heard each other when the accusations and blame game started. The list could go on and on.
Any other ideas?

Well when you've finished, you could do this. Glue their hands to their heads, tie a nylon or steel write around their necks, and a rope around their waists. Make sure the rop is longer than the wire. Then, ti the rope and the tire to a bridge and throw them off. Once it's over, they'll be holding their heads in their hands, dangling over a river.

It was just my reimagination ...
Or I could change Ronnie Moore to a woman, and Bonnie Hammer to a man. You know, Ronnie and Bonnie exchange genders! See how THEY like it!!
I could also offer them new jobs as producers of an exciting new show, let them work hard providing input, design, and all the other things it takes to get a show started ... and then pull the plug on them at the 11th hour, fire them again, give the show to other people and have them completely redo the entire concept to something totally different from what Bonnie and Ronnie envisioned. And just keep doing this over and over again!
I'm evil. ;-)
