Thumbs up The Twilight Zone

Quote:

"You're travelling through another dimension,

a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind;

a journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination.

That's the signpost up ahead - your next stop, the Twilight Zone!"
In my opinion, this is the best written scifi show of all time. Rod Serling every week gave us thrills and chills that astounded and amazed us. And he managed to stay unpredictable with that twist often at the end.

You usually expect alot of "dud" episodes nowadays in a season. But they managed to be amazingly consistent and on a high level of quality with the writing, consistently.

But there are a few that stand out to me.

-Martin Landau as a soviet defector alone in a room, nervous with a bomb and an assassin out his window.

-William Shatner, a newley wed obbsessed with a little dimestore fortune machine.

-Shatner again on a plane where only he can see a gremlin tearing apart the wing!

-A beautiful actress who everyone thinks is self indulgent trying to lure everyone in town to see her one-woman show, sabing there lives as she herself dies in an airplane accident.

-Jack Klugman vs Johnathan Winters in a nervous game of pool.

-Jack again as a trumpet player with soul.

Man...there are just too may to list! But I bet everyone has their favorites.

dodo-dodo dodo-dodo dodo-dodo.......

Hi Thomas!!!

I loved growing up with Twilight Zone and its competitor, Outer Limits. These two shows pushed the boundaries of the imagination with incredibly rich and innovative stories. Very few (if any) new SciFi shows offer anything even remotely new - and that with multi-million dollar budgets. Yet here were a pair of weekly episodes with such a thin budget, even you and I would have trouble making a decent home video with it! The success secret here was STORY STORY STORY.

I loved the gifted Burgess Meredith in the many parts he played, like the abused book reader who's only wish in life was to have enough time to read - then the world ends and his dream comes true, only to accidentally smash his glasses in a cruel act of fate. And again as an obsolete librarian, in a society which may very well come true someday. "To Serve Man" will stand forever as a monument to the surprise ending of all endings. Twilight Zone was truly outstanding. I avidly watch it on Skiffy's marathons to this very day.

Outer Limits was no stranger to great eps either. The radio station operator who boosts his power too much and draws a glowing alien to Earth; the antique camera that takes pictures of (scary) future events; the decaying mansion whose residents find at the end, they can never leave; the alien eyes in a crystal ball who only want to survive; and lest we forget, the incredible Doomsday episode with the wedding gift that forever traps an aging bride's beloved groom.

We will never see such innovation again, such unique inspiration, such raw emotion.

Only in the reruns of our mind...

Twilight Zone, The - Companion Book verified to be packed in with Season 1 release
Posted by David Lambert
12/28/2004

Good morning! With today's release of 1959's The Twilight Zone - Season 1: The Definitive Edition, we have something resembling an answer to the question about the $20 price difference we mentioned last time between the SRP of the 1st and 2nd seasons. Here's an extract of the text from our last news item:

...where the 1st season is priced at $119.99 SRP (and still is; we checked), the newly announced 2nd season will go for $20 cheaper at a list price of $99.99 for a very similar release. No explanation for the difference in price was made available.

One of our readers, Case Gaines, wrote in to tell us what seems to be the difference. You might recall that our first word about these new season sets from Image came from a radio interview with Marc Scott Zicree, author of The Twilight Zone Companion. Apparently a copy of Zicree's book is being enclosed with this set, according to our reader:

The reason why the first season is an extra $20 is because it comes with (Marc Scott) Zicree's book, "The Twilight Zone Companion". I, myself, have the latest edition of this book, but the one with the DVD collection seems to be an updated (third) edition. One can assume that season two is less because it will not any sort of book and the consequent seasons will be $99.99 also.

Case isn't the first one of our readers to mention this, but turns out to be the first one to verify that this book is indeed in the box! It's been talked about on the internet, but Image never verified that this book was for-certain going to be packaged into this release. Now we finally know, on release date, and are pleased to pass it on to our readers. We're told, though, that the package is designed so that future print runs of this DVD might not have the book; we don't know how limited it is, so fans won't want to tarry.

It's also worth mentioning that you can buy the 2nd edition of the same book from Amazon for just $10.85; click this link to go to the listing. So that opens up some other options as well...but keep in mind that the pack-in copy of the book is a new updated version.

Thanks to Case for e-mailing us with the confirmation, and the well-written description.

Fans who've kept up with that list know that March 29th is the release date for The Twilight Zone - Season 2: The Definitive Edition. Now distributor Image Entertainment has announced the complete details of that 6-DVD set. Here's a copy-and-paste of their information:

As you can see from Image's final paragraph, this item is packed with special features! So is the 1st season box set, which ships in a couple of weeks (Dec. 28th), but where the 1st season is priced at $119.99 SRP (and still is; we checked), the newly announced 2nd season will go for $20 cheaper at a list price of $99.99 for a very similar release. No explanation for the difference in price was made available.

Specs are the same as well, as you would expect: audio is the orginal English Mono. Video is Full Frame in the original black and white. Running time is around 900 minutes. Here's a look at the cover for this compilation:
