Thoughts after re-watching BSG . . .

Hi All!

It has been about 2 years since I have seen an episode of BSG, but I have been a huge fan of the show for a long time. While I liked the new mini, it wasn't the BSG that I have grown to love. In lue of the new show about the premier in the US, I decided to re-watched the original show, and I was completely blown away.

In the interum between watching the show, I have matured in so many ways. I remembered the show for Starbuck's wise cracks, the now cheesy FX, and, of course, the Cylons. I was pleasently surprised when I found that the show was so much more deeper than that.

This time around I noticed the religious and mythological elements of the show that had previously escaped me. I could sense the beginning of an arc that, unfortunatly, we never saw then end of. As a writer myself, I noticed certain things that told me that the show would have evolved to an even deeper mythical yet personal story.

Which leads me to my question. Is there any information about where the show was going to go in its second season and beyond?

P.S. If you couldn't tell by my Call Sign, I am also a huge Babylon 5 fan. The beginnings of the arc I mentioned has to do with the whole Ship of Light story. It made me think abouyt how similar that situation is to the Vorlon/shadow conflict in B5. Any thoughts? I wonder if JMS watched BSG?

You post echos my expierence With watching BSG TOS as an adult.
Growing up I loved Starbuck too, his sense of humor and getting to see Cylons blasted out of the stars by ace pilots is what I remembered.

Through adult eyes I also saw past the outdated FX to the deeper elements of the show, with the mythos, and so much of the storyline developing that had escaped me in my youth.
It's a shame that it was never continued.......so much potiental is still there left in a sleeping giant.

I remember seeing somewhere what Larson was planing for season two......I'll see what I can find.

There is unfortunately no definitive answer to what might have happened in a real season 2. Those of us who always expected good things building off the strength of "The Hand Of God" for so many years received a rude shock a couple years ago when a memo surfaced that indicated Larson was going to scale back the scope of the show and jettison half the supporting cast. The biggest shock was the idea that in the season premiere, Sheba would be killed and then Commander Cain would return only to have been turned into a replicant by an alien race. The debate still goes on to whether this was just Larson tossing some ideas around that he wouldn't have seriously implemented, or whether it really does represent what he would have done had the show not been cancelled.

I sincerely hope we never would have been subjected to that storyline, because to me it would have totally destroyed all the positive steps that had been taken.

), just how special BSG was, and why we remember it so fondly.

B5 may very well have been inspired; several other shows were for sure. Star Trek:Voyager even dubbed in some original BSG phrases in one episode, as a nod (I imagine) to that beloved show.

Hello JDSValen.

Like amberstar and yourself, I also rediscovered BSG as an adult years after loving the show as a boy. My fears that the show would not stand up against modern sci fi shows were quickly eased as the show was every bit as good as I remembered. While the SFX have dated badly, the hairdo's are a bit dodgy, and Boxey is still annoying. Everything else is better through an adults eyes! For characters and story, it really does copair well against the likes of Babylon 5 and post TNG Star Trek series.

I was also struck by the similarity between the Ship of Lights/Count Iblis story arc and the Vorlon/Shadow story in Babylon 5! In fact I made almost the same comment as you when I first joined this forum!

It's nice to know I'm not alone in my opinion.

I am a little dissapointed after reading that supposed memo from Larson about season 2. The whole Cain-into-robot thing could have been done well in the hands of a good writer, but cutting half the cast would have been horrible. Removing Tigh alone would have killed the show, not to mention the other characters.

The thing about replacing Athena doesn't surprise me. After listening to the commentary on "Saga" on the DVDs (which they did a very good job on, btw) Hatch mentioned that some of the big wigs didn't like her acting, which was why her role was reduced as the season went along.

I love Tos and I don't loose anything in the so called "outdated" effects etc. But then I love classic movies even gasp black and white! I am a sci-fi lover, I even love watching the old sci-fi like the Day the Earth Stood Still and Forbidden Planet. Also I hear so much about the "70's hair"....i don't get it but welcome aboard and have fun!!!!!!

I've always been pretty skeptical of that memo about Galactica's second season. First of all, it was sold on e-bay. That doesn't exactly instill confidence. Add to that the comments about Isaac Asimov joining the show despite his pretty famous dislike of it. In an article about sci-fi movies he said, "Star Wars was fun and I enjoyed it. But Battlestar Galactica was Star Wars all over again and I couldn't enjoy it without amnesia."
Ouch.

Don't be skeptical, it's the real deal, I got mine from Glen A. Larson's son and Glen' signed it GAL in thick marker pen!
