Muffit Why Daggits Are Important

Ron Moore wanted no daggits in the new show because he considered this one of the weaknesses of the original show. This shows how much he knows. Daggits are the favorite of the colonials because of their ability to protect children. According to Dr Wilker, trained Daggits were used to guard colonial Warriors as they slept. I wonder what happened to them? If Boxey owned Muffit which was killed on Caprica in the attack this animal must have been an endangered species. IMHO it was that there were no daggits on the fleet. Probably by this time of the war many of the battles were fought in space against the Cylons. This was probably why we saw no Colonial Marines. Wilker coming up with a cybernetic Daggit is ingenious. Muffit proved that it was worth it's mushies time and time again:

Fire In Space- Muffit manages to retrieve both the breathers on the Galactica's bridge and a firefighter who is trapped. Only a mechanical dog could do this. Boomer wouldn't risk Boxey. Muffit also has attuned sensors for smell.

The Magnificent Warriors- Muffit manages to follow Belloby's trail after she is abducted by Nogow and his people the Boryays. With no Muffit they would have never found her.

Gun On ice Planet Zero- Muffit is the only one who can find help. His being a robot is a plus because a real Daggit couldn't survive the atmosphere.

Dogs have been used by the military for centuries. During the Vietnam War they sniffed out the enemy and saved countless lives. They aren't stupid worthless animals. They could have made Moore's version more realistic. If he had included them, the Colonials would know who the Cylon replicants are. Daggits can identify them easily. Look at the Terminator. Dogs were used to tell who was human and who was a Terminator.

Someone stole Ron's beloved Teddy Bear in high School. He's been having problems since.

Just joking! No slam intended here.

I especially asked at the Vancouver Sci-Fi Convention BSG Panel if there were to be any Daggits in this new series and they said no! I expressed my deepest regrets for this decision

I saw a heart breaking documentary on the dogs used in the Vietnam War. They were also used to sniff out mines and trip wires and could lead the troupes through a mine field or jungle without injury to the troupes. They even pulled some of the wounded soldiers to safety. They were not allowed to leave Vietnam when the war ended and were all destroyed as there was a concern that they might bring back diseases to the US. The soldiers were heartbroken over this decision. It an amazing tale of heroism by these many dogs.

This thread is a real stretch one of the few things I like about TNS is NO MUFFIT. The problem with Battlestar was not daggits but robot daggits who managed to get on away missions.

Anyone who thinks daggits can't help hasn't met mine. http://www.mydaggit.com/
Anyone who thinks daggits can't blow away the competition specifically hasnt seen mine with movie props! - http://www.mydaggit.com/Page11.html
Its all good though, if you dont like daggits it means youre the kind of person who didnt think K-9 was cool, doesnt like Gromit, didnt like scooby doo or lassie or rin-tin-tin or dino or snoopy or astro, and didnt realize that Brain was solving all the mysteries on Inspector Gadget. Lord help you!

I've always thought that the daggit could work if updated. I talked about this a while ago:

http://www.colonialfleets.com/forums...ghlight=Daggit

Also in terms of a Continuation movie, I also thought that real robotics have reached a point where instead of CGI or an animatronic, you could probably have Sony or Honda just make a real robot dog. This could then also be used to promote BSG much in the same way that R2-D2 and C-3PO were used to promote Star Wars, making appearances here and there.

Same can be said for WWI and the trench dogs (or the horses), also for the sled dogs of the great polar explorers. The last of the sled dogs taken out of the Australian Antarctic territories had to have very special quarantine provisions made for them, but most of their ancestors hadn't been so lucky. They gave their lives for human pursuits.
re the WWI horses, we have a nice memorial water trough in our town center dedicated to all the horses that served.

If the colonials didn't have daggits that looked like dogs, I see it would have been another animal doing the same function.
As JJ said, with robotics and CGI now, there is no reason why companion animals can't be part of a updated version in a really positive way.

There are many stories that would benefit from the inclusion of companion animals, and lots of excellent sci fi uses them as a integral part of the plot, in many ways.
Boxey and Muffit were the 'boy and his dog' motif, (an instantly recognisable scenario in 70's storytelling) but there are other uses (think of the DRDs in Farscape) However, it needs a certain level of cultural literacy to see past the 'daggy' factor and look at the function of the role in the narrative.

Cheers,
Lara

Since this would kill the plot of GINO, you are saying that daggit = no GINO?

I LOVE daggits!!!

Muffit Re: Why Daggits Are Important

When I was a kid, Muffy was my favorite character. I can understand wanting to update the daggits, but leaving them out altogether?
