Default OT: Congratulations NASA

NASA Lands Space Rover on Mars

Tonight NASA successfully landed the Spirit rover on the surface of Mars. NASA technicians at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory were then able to link the Spirit rover with the orbiting Mars Odyssey. The Spirit has already begun transmitting photos from the surface of Mars. This is the first successful return to Mars in six years.

addendum:
Excitement at JPL was dampened by statements by newly appointed NASA executive Bonnie Hammer. Ms. Hammer states she hopes to move NASA away from space type projects. Ms. Hammer feels that NASA has done space “to death” and it is time for the organization to move on. She feels NASA should focus on UFO and paranormal phenomenon. Other plans include fear simulations and studies on groups of really wacky roommates.

(Sorry, couldn't help myself)

Congratulations to NASA.

Seriously this is a great night for our real space people. NASA has done their usual superb job with the planetary exploration program. (My father worked on the Voyager probes. I actually got to carry a tiny piece of the Voyager 2 when I was little.)

Support your local space program.

Way to go NASA. Great job.

THe cynic in me might wonder why the Beagle disappeared right before a Nasa probe made a successful landing. I'm telling him to shut up for a bit and let other people have their fun...

Hey, at least someone got there. Makes yo wonder if there's some weird oddities around Mars though, with so many probes disappearing like that.

*reads Addendum*

Great news on the "Spirit" landing. Hopefully, contact will be made with "Beagle". *fingers crossed

The link below will take you to the first images taken by Spirit. They're black and white but, NASA expects to receive color images sometime on Sunday:

I am sure they will still censor the images that show the ruined cities. -jk

Have they shown any recent pics of the moons to shut up the freaks that swore Phobos crashed into the surface a few years back?

Those interested in this kind of thing, and stargazing in general, might want to check out spaceweather.com and also the various links from there.

Also a favourite of mine is badastronomy.com to bust many of the myths the scifi community.
