Lightbulb BSG - Caprica Fallen

The scene from the pilot episode of "Battlestar Galactica" where Commander Adama has ordered the Galactica back to Caprica. (Both he and Apollo will be flying to the surface momentarily.)

Created in 3D Studio Max 3.1 with post-work in Photoshop 5.5 and Painter 5.5. Battlestar mesh by David Kerin; Cylons screen-captured from "Saga of a Star World" episode.

I wanted to create an image which summarizes the first act of the original "Battlestar Galactica" pilot. The picture is intended to be somber... something basic and introductory for non-fans. No major space battles. No small spacecraft zipping around in endless dogfights. (I'll get back to that eventually. )

If anyone has recommendations on 3D asteroid creation within Lightwave or 3D Studio Max, let me know, please? (Whether tutorials or objects which I can download.) The few tutorials I've found have been rather lacking.

Superb! Now I have a few hundred of these objects to create.

Thanks, Darrell!

in LW, depending on what version you're using, you can do asteroids using hypervoxels which is how i did this (although they actually look like space buggers to me :p), i can write up a tutorial if ya want

Thanks again, Darrell. Here's my first attempt, using your tutorial for MAX. When I find my Lightwave 5.6 dongle (in one of my boxes around here), I'll try Fabio's and Arrghman's tutorials, too.

(Arrghman, if you find your tutorial, please don't hesistate to pass it along!)

yeah, my method will only work with 6.0 and up... but with 5.6 there may be a way to safe some time using particle storm and object replacement... i dont know how to do it, but it might be worth looking up...

Wonderful pic Michael

Like i said you have the knack for making images that's for sure, and dramatic ones.

Take it from me asteriods are a pain in the ass to make really. Trying to get them just right is not fun.

Just ask Richard!

Thanks, Don. It's fun to put together these pictures. I start positioning meshes and voila! -- the creative visualization kicks into high gear. Playing with these new asteroids ought to be fun. Creating/rendering each one won't be so bad... not until I'm grumbling "Asteroid #67 done... Jeez, 1388 more to go!" or "Oh God, MAX crashed!! I was so close!!" hehehe

Ah, but you missed Richard's "can you change that?" from the BSG:TSC trailer days. So many well-intentioned demands, so little time --- and so little budget. (lol!)

As you know, Richard always means well.

Heh, I can theorize how you made those, Fabio, but I'm not sure I could do them myself... nice.
