The Television Mentality

First let me say, I liked the mini but I will not try to convert anyone to my opinion about it. That is a losing game.

What I to throw out here is what this mini may mean to future BSG projects.

I think we all know the television/Hollywood mentality: new ideas are risky, avoid them; proven ideas are bankable, redo them again and again.

If this mini does become a series and is successful, the reception to making a theatrical movie would be far warmer, toasty even. Think of the resistance there has been just getting to where we are now, it took 25 years to get BSG back on TV. Regardless if you like or dislike the mini, you have to admit it has given us a foothold that can now be used to catapult other projects. Look, for example, at the Stargate SG1 series that is now going to have a spinoff involving Atlantis. I hope this BSG can give us a similar shot at other BSG projects.

To the bigwigs who make the financial decisions, you can send them petitions until your hand cramps but money talks. Show them that people will watch, and that they can make money (which, BTW, is their goal and their reason for being) and they'll come to you.

Does this make sense to anyone else?

I wish I had your optimism but I don't. Being a long time Trekkie, I've learned how this business works. They're only gonna give what sells. If 2003 makes money; they're gonna give you nothing but 2003.

Support with your money only the BSG you like. I don't like Enterprise, so I won't buy any products associated with it. However, I will purchase stuff from the TOS, the ST Mini-mates from TOS and TNG....because to me that IS Star Trek and that is what I want to see...that is what I want Enterprise to become.

Petitions mean nothing. Hollywood only understands money.

P.S. To marketers out there surfing, I will purchase items of quality associated with TOS only. Now plan your budgets accordingly.

I would counter that most of the big money men hoo-haws out could't tell a Cardassian from a cargo freighter. That's how we got ST Voyager. "Its Star Trek? Sold! Trekkies will like it, right? Here's the money." Its all "buzzwords" and soundbites.

If BSG does become successful series, it might become a new buzzword, "Give me another 'Battlestar Galactica'!" which is when De Santo comes waltzing in with just that and gets his money.
