The whole pisture...
-Ratings Breakdown:
With CBS in repeats, the battle of dominance last night was between ABC and NBC. On that note, ABC's combination of Primetime Monday (#2: above average 7.9/12) and Monday Night Football (St. Louis vs. Cleveland, 12.5/17 in primetime) inched past NBC's night of reality -- Fear Factor (#1: 9.3/14) and the season finale of Average Joe (12.5/18 from 9-11 p.m.) -- by one-tenth of a rating point in the overnights. Overall, Monday Night Football averaged a 12.1/19 from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. ET. As for Average Joe, the next edition will be set in Hawaii.
Despite airing all non-originals, CBS remained in the competitive mix with its line-up of Yes, Dear (#3: 7.5/11), Still Standing (#2t: 7.9/11), Everybody Loves Raymond (#2: 11.0/15), Two and a Half Men (#3: 9.2/13) and CSI: Miami (#3: 10.0/15).
So Everybody Loves Raymond (a rerun) was worth nearly 4 times the mini, ratings wise.

That's pretty good for a cable show. Markedly higher than the competition. And alot better than last year. Though I assume that last year skiffy was airing a sg1 repeat.
Though that 3.5 is about what Firefly was when the series was canceled. If I remember right. This mini is somewhere around $15 million right? Add to that a HUGE amount of commercials across many networks.
So this show was expensive. I don't know if that is good enough for a tv series.

What do these numbers mean, anyone know? And just out of curiosity how do they compare with ratings for the pilot of TOS? can they be compared?

Cable shows never compare their ratings to network ratings, since cable can count on about 70 million viewers, compared to the hundreds of millions of network viewers. And then you have to compare Sci Fi to say HBO and obviously HBO gets higher numbers. But that said, for Sci Fi, these are their highest ratings ever, comparable to Dune.

The ratings that will really matter will be the ones for tonights airing,to see how many people are interested enough to watch the conclusion.I for one will not watch it! I mean who really cares about these people? They are all angry, childish, and not very likeable.Does anyone really want to spend an hour every week with these people,I know I don't.TOS was not perfect by any means, but at least it had people that were likeable and you cared about.

Welcome everyone!!!!
StarWarrior you are absolutely right. All the advertising assured high ratings. But fall off will mean that people didn't like what they saw and that will kill the mini as a tv series.

Well, I'm braving it again tonight, but so far the Cylons haven't one. Unless, you consider the whole mini thing a Cylon plot!

Ratings, schmatings
I know of people who watched the miniseries even though they disliked it before watching, and continue to dislike it after watching it. It was the curiosity factor. It's part just the general audience watching and part some BG fans watching it out of curiosity, the aptly named 'train wreck effect'. Now imagine how much better their ratings would have been if they had respected the BG fans and given us what we wanted! The ratings would be significantly higher, especially with word of mouth in favor instead of against them.

Muffit-Thanks to you as well for the welcome! Stray Viper is right,if they had done it with the original actors 25 yarens later it would probably have been SciFi Chennels highest rated movie ever.I watched the original show when I was 12 and I've waited 25years for an update, and this is the pathetic movie that we're given-one that doesn't even remotely resemble the original.Like a lot of people here I decided to give this movie a chance, but God, it is so un-Galactica I couldn't believe it!Hopefully someone(Larson,Hatch,or Desanto) will give us the Galactica movie we all want, and very soon!

The ratings win is a short term victory for the Sci-Fi channel. We knew going into this that people would watch out of morbid curiosity and nothing more (or should I say Moore?)
If you compare the numbers, almost the same number of people watched "Everwood" so this isn't saying much. Although I'm sure Bonnie "Hitler" Hammer will put a huge spin on this. I hope many of the actors are unavailable to participate in the series, due to schedule conflicts and FEAR of the backlash.

Love-Hate thing...huh? Well I have to admit I watched it out of curiosity. My first impression of part one was not a good one. The actors did their lines without true emotion and the action was almost not existent. I could not feel Lee’s (Apollo) pain about losing his brother Zak. They needed to put a flashback in there about the accident and show Zak die. Maybe even throw in there a fond moment of Kara and Zak. As for the rest of the crew like Tigh, we know he has a drinking problem and he wife might have left him…. Who knows? Sharon and Typho what’s their back-story or are they just horny co-workers? Dulla and Billy…why is she soooo attracted to him? The New President, Laura, and Adama possibly having romantic interest in each other. I really do not know where the new Boxey will fit in. Maybe Boxey will help keep Sharon (Boomer) on our side. Of course there are numerous story lines that can arise from their travels.
Part Two was much better with the action. I really like Gaius and his conflict. What really grabbed me here was the final dogfight where Kara rammed Lee's viper and landed in the Galactica's Landing bay A with a second to spare. Oh...almost forgot the little note on Adama's desk.

I know a lot of people who watched it who have no idea who Ron Moore or Bonnie Hammer are, and have no idea there is a controversy.
It was just a show on TV that looked interesting to them. No grander cause for it or against it.

No sense...
The second night's ratings make no sense at all. Why would more people tune in to the second night after missing the entire first night? To my mind, there is nothing easier to alter than a number, so I have little confidence in the ones I am seeing.
I hope you all will forgive me saying so, but I wouldn't be surprised if the whole reason for the mini being so insulting to fans was because it hurts me. I know, that's extreme, but please spend a day in my shoes. You will stop laughing when your jaw drops far enough.

The second night's numbers are easy to explain! Everyone had time to go into the office after part one and they told their friends how bad the new series sucked!! And their friends were like it can't suck that bad!! So they tunned in for part 2 for about 1/2 an hour and realized that it really did suck that bad! So they turnned it OFF!! And put in their Version of the Living ledgend from their DVD box set and went to bed.

Ratings for the second night of any show are almost always lower. This is very unusual.
However, It is illegal and bad business to play wth ratings numbers. Plus they are generated by an outside source that has little interest in the outcome of any show.
Networks have little interest in "fixing" the numbers, because if they decide to go ahead with a show that is based on false numbers it would prove disastarous for them financially.
Networks don't usually get involved in conspiracies.

Does anyone know if the 7-9 pm time slot is counted in these numbers? People who didn't watch part 1 Monday night may have tuned in to watch it Tuesday night, thus accounting for the higher numbers. Just a thought.

Just letting out steam
Since I can't post this on the "other" topics ...
I just want to vent ... I suppose it's not surprising, but I just get all wound up when I read in the "good" mini topics a recurrent theme: that the mini's ratings were "through the roof". BS! I mean they weren't bad but come on, folks, let's face a little reality here, they were NOT through the roof. Such statements reek of 'spin' instead of logical reasoning.
*whew*
There. I feel better now.

Don't worry.. the revised ratings were *way* lower. 2.9 for ep2 being the highest. Scifi originally quoted the overnights.. and isn't saying anything about the final ones.

Hi DCRabbit! Welcome to Colonial Fleets!
I too am glad the ratings truly show it did not fare anywhere near as well as Skiffy expected. If even Spongebob beat it (without advertising) that kinda reveals a lot. It's sad they are trying so hard to conceal the actual ratings.

I don't think I have seen a reply to my question of why those of you might wish the mini is less succesful.I may not have posted it in this thread.
I don't see how this failing would bring anyone delight. While if it flies, then some of us would be happy.

To put it most simply, Darth, most of us believe that the more successful the mini is, the less of a chance of a continuation there will be. And factor in that, for most of us, "Battlestar Galactica" is TOS, not the mini.
Personally, I'm glad the mini shows some interest in a Battlestar Galactica. If nothing else, it shows that there is a market. Now the question is what to fill that market with - the "real" BSG, or the "fake" BSG?
That's why we hope the mini goes no further; so that the interest generated will be directed at a continuation of TOS.
I am
Dawg

Regardless of opinions or taste,THIS is a wedge issue in the fanbase.
Well,on with the struggle folks.
