Viper Wallpaper
I've got this Viper model that I built last year, so I figured what would be a nice setting - and this is what I've come up with...
1280x1024
Hope you like it!

it's gorgeous as always, but this time i've actually got some more constructive criticism: the viper's wings look very edgy. some chamfering would do good, imo.

Actually, the wing not only has a small bevel line (which is I think what you call chamfer), but it is actually a double-edged wing, an even more complex structure. But due to the light direction, you don't see much of it. I touched it up a bit in Photoshop, should be a little bit better now.

Ok, I have gots a question...
How in the WORLD do you make those AWSOME planet/cloud maps?!?!?!
I've been trying for quite awhile, terragen can make some OK maps (Much better then LunaCell)
but NOTHING compared to the planets in your images/most TV shows.
what gives? how do you make them? (And so quickly at that)
VERY nice pic BTW.

I've answered that in another forum, so here it is:
The planet is done as three spheres that are placed very close together. The bottom sphere has the actual texture map (I think it´s some altered tatooine texture map) with very light bumpmapping. The middle sphere has the cloud layer. To get the shadow effect, the cloud texture is subtracted from the bottom sphere shader with a slight offset - you just have to be careful to get the right shadow direction. The top sphere has a glow for the outer rim. That is done with a very helpful maya node called sampler info. With that, you can fade in and out a texture according to the normal direction in relation to the camera position. This is set so that the outer sphere is not visible if you´re looking directly onto the sphere and becomes more and more visible towards the edge. Right at the edge it fades out again. But you have to do a lot of tweaking before you get it right the way you want it.
As far the actual maps - try looking around on the net. You can use some satellite footage to build up your own planet.
Once you have that basic setup for one planet, you can pretty quickly change it to another one (exchange maps and colors, maybe tweak some parameters).
Hope that helps...

Sure I could do that, but why would I want to do it? That explosion was part of the idea from the start.

ah yes, better now.
the picture is close to perfect now, but there is one more thing that, if you look closely, makes it appear less perfect: the three vipers have the same set of textures.
i wouldn't mention that if it wasn't you, but you are better than most, so there...suffer from it
seriously, some slight changes in the textures would make a perfect image

Ok, you got me... :uhdrop:
But where exactly do you notice that´s the same texture set? I´ve checked it and found no obvious point where you notice it.

it wasn't that easy, that's true *g*
the point where the wings taper, the red line on the top-wing has a dark spot in it's "knee", the dirt stripes on top of the wing of the center viper are repeated on the bottom side of the wing of the left viper,...
little stuff really.

That's fantastic!
The drama in that scene is top notch. And the planet and asteroids are incredible!
More please!

Your picture
Nice Desktop!
Btw, do you like to do desktop themes? I often like to but BSG on my computer (pictures, icons, etc.) your desktop would look great as part of a theme.
