Default Space Academy on DVD

Anyone remember that after he was Dr. Smith, and before he was the voice of Lucifer, Jonathan Harris appeared on Saturday mornings on CBS in the low budget live action Filmation series "Space Academy" as Commander Gampu?

Well, even if you don't, you can see those 15 episodes that were produced and aired over the course of 1977-79 on DVD in January!

The kid actor in the show Eric Greene, as "Loki" grew up to write a book on the Planet Of The Apes movies and does the text commentary that appears on the first POTA movie DVD.

Eric -

Thanks for this bit of news..... I was hoping it would be forthcoming considering that Ark II just got released on DVD this week. I have some really dodgy VHS recordings of Space Academy from the old days of the SciFi channel. The visual quality has really degraded over the last 12 years or so. Now, I'll be able to replace them!

The detachable ship on the Starfires (more militaristic versions of the Seekers from Space Academy) was actually an escape pod...so yeah, your memory serves well.

Just to clarify a few things, ALL of the live-action and animated Filmation shows that do not involve a property owned by another company are coming out on DVD over the course of the next year. So yes, that also includes Jason Of Star Command, and best of all (for everyone like me who had a mega-crush on Joanna Cameron) Secrets Of Isis. "Shazam" is not included since that's Warner's call to release (along with the animated versions of Batman, Tarzan etc.) Animated "Star Trek" likewise had to be released by Paramount and is coincidentally coming out at the same time as the other Filmation properties.

ISIS...YES!!!! Joanna Cameron was such a hottay....and I think of her as a sort of forerunner to Lara Croft.

And definitely hope to see JoSC.

Taranis, I don't have any pics of the Starfire, sadly.

According to a Special FX book I used to have, JoSC had a number of effects shots per episode that was comparable to many other science fiction feature films of the day. That's pretty impressive. It'll be interesting to see how the VFX hold up after all these years.

Respectfully,
Martok2112
