Long Patrol Croad's Viper
Have any of you CGI guys ever modelled the early version of the Viper as flown by Croad in the episode The Long Patrol?
If so I'd like to see it. If not, I've set you a challenge! Regards, Peter |
David Kerin
Dave Kerin did! Check his Gallery section on http://www.battlestarpegasus.com/gallery/index.html for renderings. He modeled close to Ralph McQuarrie's original Viper (Starhound) designs which were the basis for the old-style Viper in "The Long Patrol."
Dave, if I'm wrong, please do correct me! Michael ...who's having a devil of a time at the moment getting this 10 megabyte animation file of "BG - The Sentinels" posted! |
Michael,
Had a look at David's stuff which is great. His McQuarrie vipers are brilliant but the viper in Long Patrol's wings are horizontal to the fuselage and not angled like on a normal viper. Also, I think the laser cannon's are on the wingtips in Long Patrol. I must say I prefer the circular intakes of the production paintings to the ones actually used. Maybe one day we'll see what DeSanto's vipers would have looked like. All the best, Peter |

That's right! (ugh!) My bad. Okay, the challenge remains open! re: last sentence. Cross your fingers. When we have lunch next, this will be a topic of discussion. We've talked about it in the past; hopefully something can finally be shared. Michael :colwar: |
Michael,
I'm crossing my fingers and my toes! Regards, Peter (hoping not to get cramp!) |
I too would love to see that model. Sadly there seems to be a lack of resource material to model from, other than stills from the episode which seem rather dark.
It does look a lot like a standard viper model with modified horizontal wings, as you mentioned. If anyone has good images or reference to that model I'd love to try building one. (Robber's shuttle might be neat too) Dave |
I'm now working on one.
|
How far along are you?
Just curious, not pushing or anything. |
Only about half done. Not much by way of ref material.

I have this (admitedly low-ploy) model:
http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/9...orpion15bm.jpg Intended for a game, so had to keep the poly's down to avoid massive slowdown (has 1004) Texturing could use a serious overhaul, I'll admit that. :errr: I also have a Viper to the same standard (1771 polys), plus a Basestar, a raider and an early-Alpha Guardian Destroyer (Todd Boyce design, source model by SteveW) None of these are to the uber-poly numbers needed for renders. These models are for gaming purposes, where fewer polys = speed. BTW, anyone willing to help this project would be greatly appreciated! :D |
Yo Raptor,
Do you have a higher poly, three view image of that model? |
No on the higher-poly verision at this time, but the three-views...:

Freespace 2, created by Volitation:tm: and Interplay:tm: back in 1995. Interplay went bust so no hope of a FS3, but the source code was released a couple of years ago and a team of part-time (and very skilled) coders have been revamping it to dramtically improve the game. More detail (including the Source Code Project, or SCP) here: http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page |
