View Full Version : Upcoming BSG Figures

I have a pre-order placed for the smaller figures from Joyride Studios (series one: Starbuck, Cylon, Viper). However, I have not been able to find any new info/photos of the larger, 12" ones coming from Majestic Studios. All their website shows is the same announcement from several months ago. Does anyone know if those figures are still coming out around October?

Dan,
I checked out the Joyride studios page, but there is no place to order them. Where did you place your pre-order and how much are the figures selling for??

I have my preorder placed with Entertainment Earth (http://www.entertainmentearth.com/)
The price varies whether you order a case (2 of each) or one set. I ordered the case, and with Priority Shipping, the cost was around $95.
Wave 2 is due a month or two after the first, and it inculdes Apollo, Athena, and the Cylon Raider (that's a hell of a combo). Photowise, they only show the prototypes that were on display at the ToyFair (Starbuck, and the Viper/Raider that look like the model kits).
Dan
PS I wonder what made Richard change his mind about allowing his likeness to be used for toys (he wouldn't allow it the first time around).

Something else I wish to say...
Whether or not you are a "figure collector", I think everyone here should support these toy lines by getting at least one set (large and small). We are very lucky that a company (in this case, two) has seen the value in the original series and is willing to produce these items. Very good sales of these figures will only help the chances of seeing a revival of some sort for the original cast. Besides, they will make very cool mantlepieces!
Perhaps we shoud go ahead and send JoyRide Studios emails thanking them for this line, and ask them to hold an online poll as to which figures we wish them to produce.

I second that thought from Dan and I'm planning on handing over my Latinum because the benefits are far reaching.
It's all about the big picture folks, in more ways than one! ;)

Thanks, Dan, for posting this info. I do have a question - why do you get 2 of each figure instead of just one?
I do like the one with Starbuck, a Cylon and a Viper. Reminiscent of The Return of Starbuck!

Ojai, you can order a set (1 of each) or a case (2 of each figure). It looked like the case price was a little lower per pc. than the set.

I totally agree with Dan. Anything remotely associated with the original series must be supported!
That is why we bought the original set of DVDs.. That is why we need to buy the trading card sets!
And now, that is why we need to get these figures based upon the original series. We must show them that there is a demand for the original series and the original actors playing those roles!!!

I would but my 'budget' won't allow it. Between my insurance refusing to
cover my daughter's clinical psychologist (I pay out of pocket for that) and
Her meds which are also not covered by insurance (I pay out of pocket
for that too $100.00 per bottle) .........and the fact that I just found out that
my oldest child may have ASPERGERS ............I simply can not afford it.
I'll be paying for my oldest child's meds and clinical psychologist out of
pocket as well. :(
I have to MAKE the money for what I need and let what I 'may want'
GO. :(

BSG Dan (or anyone else who can help)-
I ordered from Entertainment Earth today (the BG action figures and some DC Direct figures) and was wondering how dependable they are. Do they get their products in at the same time as other online and in-store businesses or...?

From the previous messages, I am assuming that the manufacturer of these Galactica figures is a company called Joyride Studios. Is that correct?
What are the individual dolls/action figures and what are their sizes? Will they be sold individually or do you have to buy several of the same figures in a case? Will these be available in toy stores or comic book stores, or will you need to order them off the Internet somewhere?

I believe that the website says that the figures will be made available nation-wide at various retail outlets...
The figures are highly detailed six inch figures in action poses with around six points of articulation (probably head, hands). I don't know how big the ships are but they are probably around 6-8 inches in length...
I pre-ordered my first set already!

Set 1 - Starbuck, Cylon centurion and Colonial Viper
Set 2 - Apollo, Athena and Cylon Raider (is that right?)

Set (includes just one of each) $44.99
you have to add shipping. Cheap rates start at $5.95

Any BSG TOS fan worth their salt should snap up these figures!
By doing that they're supporting the original show by showing it still has financial legs.
As to the likenesses, this may be due to the actors themselves owning their faces so you might end up something a bit more generic.
These a way better than the old Mattel figures and we should be thankful Joyride has seen the money-making potential of the old show and the willingness of its fans around the world to part with their cubits for these products.

Damnnnnnnnn those look good!
So, Joyride and Majestic are releasing figures of Galactica. all looks good. Are these going to be available in many places Peter? no matter how great they are they won't last long if their are not available to buy from well known outlets. I'd like, to support a Galactica line of figures like those by being able to get a large or buy from a vast range of characters from either line.
So i'd hope choices aren't limited to the core characters, and we also get some of Galactica's supporting characters in third or fourth volume/set i.e. Cassiopea, Boomer, Tigh, Omega, Jolly, Sheba, Dr Salik, Dr Wilker, Boxey, Greenbean. Or a line of other Galactica characters as the figures from Majestic and Joyride might get to be more popular.
What about a series of villains... Baltar, Count Iblis, Maga, Bora and Taba, Commandant Leiter, Lucifer, Spector, The Boray.
Or a set of exclusive limited release set of characters figures; like Commander Cain, Colonel Tolan, Bo-Jay, Chameleon, John, Colonel Croft, Imperious Leader, Serina, Dr Paye, Dr Ravishol, Reece.
Eh.. ah only a pipe dream. i can dream can't i?
Nice stuff there though.

While I will be getting these figures upon their release, I must say that I am a bit disappointed in the photos i've seen so far. I know they all say "prototype", but these figures seem to be more along the lines of figurines (or mini-statues). They don't look like they have much (if any) aritculation to them. That means that they will have to remain in the basic pose seen in the photos. Anyone that owns any kind of McFarlane figures knows how annoying this can be.
Also, why did they have to sculpt Apollo's jacket "buckled up"? At no time in the series did he ever wear it like that.
In reference to Charybdis' question, I believe the Gold Cylon was announced as part of the 12" line.
Finally, as for the longevity of this line goes, it will last as long as people support it. Sure, it will be sold at specialty stores like Suncoast, GameStop, etc. but that won't matter as long as the sales are there. If you want to see figures of Baltar, Cain, Iblis, etc., you need to buy these first two sets.

" If it's a wide release set of figures yeah. But too many times have i heard of a BG product and it's only gets a minor release."
I don't understand what you're getting at. Are you saying that you won't support the line unless it gets a wide release? What difference would that make?
Or, are you saying that it will only survive if it gets a wide release. If that's the case, how do you explain Art Asylum's "Star Trek" line? After the wide release of both the "Enterprise" and "Nemesis" figures failed, they scaled back for TOS figures, making them available online and through stores like Suncoast. The result? This year will mark the third wave of TOS figures. If it could survive for Art Asylum, BSG can survive for Joyride and Majestic. The key is support from the fanbase that helped sell over 150,000 copies of the DVD set @ about $100 apiece.

What i'm getting at is, if it isn't easy to obtain as going to a local shop that cover such merchandise like those above. Then it will be extremely difficult to get ahold of one of them. Not everybody orders online.
And be honest, when was the last time a Galactica product was as available as The Trek or Star Wars ones on the shelves? We're fans of Galactica we WANT it to sell. But i'm being realistic. I want to know how available it will be.
Don't feel threatend by the fact "names" like Star Trek and Star Wars sell things by the virtue of the name value. Galactica might sell DVD's Then again look how the DVD format has taken off.
Merchandise figures are different. where as fans would buy DVD's average fans who don't know about the figures aren't going to hunt for them as much as finding out, if their beloved sci-fi series has hit DVD yet.
I'm a Galactica fan, am i not. and i didn't know about the figures untill the news was put up here!
Like i said. It's easier to by a product if it is wdiely released. That makes sense, my comments aren't something to be shocked at. I do support it. but i can't back something by buying it. if said item isn't available for me to buy in the first place. If the DVD's you've brought a parallel to weren't in mass production and were a limited release and it was in short supply then, i could hardly support it if i couldn't purchase it in shops or hunted around for it.
Is that fair enough. logical isn't it.
If you want to compare things, i suggest you hunt for the new Galactica trading cards from "Rittenhouse". They are around if you know where to look, but "it" being a set of trading cards. How many were released? or better yet can you find them now. (and i've looked)
If might surivive small scale, but i'd like to see these brilliant works make it big and be sold to many. with the remake on the warpath soon i'd like more and more classic BG merchandise out there too.

Sadly, I'm less impressed with these after seeing the vehicles and Athena. I'm going to go off on a tirade here, so please excuse me in advance...or skip my commentary. :)
Athena looks really, really BAAAAAAAD and it's an insult to Maren Jensen. Seriously, the figure looks like a man in drag (check the lips and nose). Do any of these really look like the actors? These figures look like sculpts from a 3rd rate toy company who has no business with this license. It was mentioned that these are more like McFarlane statues and that's not what the majority of the fans want. If they're trying to go the McFarlane route, they at least need to look like the characters. Joyride Studios is to blame here, with the awful sculpts and lack of articulation. What's the use of loose accessories on a statue? Is there going to be a situation where I'll want Starbuck to be clutching at thin air...or Athena pointing at the ground? I don't know who dropped the ball on that, because the Joyride "Halo" figures are decent and have plenty of joints and movement. So, they're capable of more than what we're seeing.
I have to slam them again for the horrible sculpts on the pilots of the vehicles. We have really cool sculpts for the Viper and Raider and then craptacular miniatures inside. They just got lazy when it came to that because they thought "nobody will see them with the cockpits closed." They did the bare minimum on them and it shows.
The reason I'm so down on Joyride Studios is because of their lackluster treatment of some really cool franchises (BG and Mechwarrior). Where are the new mechs they promised over a year ago? It reminds me of Hasbro's treatment of the classic "Planet of the Apes" line back in '98 (which had awful sculpts). A few months later, Medicom launched their POTA line and really shamed Hasbro. Hopefully, someone will snatch the license away from Joyride Studios and give us the product we fans deserve.
Now I'm sure people will say "support the company so they'll do more figures" and "we need to show our interest." Well, my motto is "If you buy their crap, they'll make more crap." Art Asylum learned a hard lesson with the "Enterprise" and "Nemesis" lines and shifted to Star Trek TOS figures, which have done marginally well. The fans spoke with their pocketbooks and Art Asylum was smart and listened.
I'll part with my hard-earned money when I'm impressed. Right now, I'm not.

I believe the last time I saw any BSG merchandise on a store shelf was back in 1996/97 when the comic book versions of Starbuck and the Cylons came out along with the toy viper and raider...I got one of them at Toys R' Us...
Haven't ever seen a thing at any store since....
And let's face it, as far as BSG goes, we get crap. We have all along and we probably always will. BUT, where BSG is concerned, BSG crap is better than nothing at all...I know many of you might disagree with that assessment. But if these things do not sell, no way in Hades Hole is anyone going to do anything like this again...

": If you want to compare things, i suggest you hunt for the new Galactica trading cards from "Rittenhouse". They are around if you know where to look, but "it" being a set of trading cards. How many were released? or better yet can you find them now. (and i've looked) "
I have them. Where did I get them? Ebay. If you wanted them bad enough, you would also have them.
As for locating these figures, the same thing applies. I don't know where in the world you are at, but almost anything can be delivered by mail. You know that places like Entertainment Earth will have them, and stores like Suncoast will more than likely stock them as well. They won't be hard to find.
Nobody has said that a BSG line will be as big as that of STAR WARS (don't compare it to TREK right now, because that didn't do well on store shelves). However, what's worse-doing good with the collector market thru specialty stores, or having a bunch of unsold product hanging on pegs at the local Wal-Mart (which, BTW, happens quite often to big-name title lines, including STAR WARS).

Another perspective from across the pond....
Re - the Rittenhouse trading card set - I picked a set up earlier this year from my local collectors store (I was subsequently told on another forum that I paid too much, which was probably true - given the price being charged for the binder!). I recently saw a few sets for sale at a large collectors fair near Birmingham - the products are there to be found - you only have to look for them...
As for the figures, I haven't decided how I will approach that yet (I'm thinking of getting rid of some of my older Star Trek figures/ships). I may choose to use a local retailer (Forbidden Planet in Birmingham) or order online (their website is http://www.forbiddenplanetstore.com/ - they have three 7 inch figures apparently on sale at the moment - Starbuck, 'Colonial Warrior' & 'Cylon Centurion' at £12.99 each - due November) or even try the next set of collectors fairs to see what I can find.
The real problem I see is striking a balance between only selling to specialist stores and flooding the market - You could buy Star Wars figures/vehicles at your local supermarket, not necessarily a bad thing for many people, but I prefer to deal with a retailer who knows what they're selling.
All the best,

Off topic a bit, but does anybody remember MEGO? They made some of the best 8" figures ever back in the 1970s. They were the leading toy company back then, but that all went downhill when they passed on the license to STAR WARS. Following that mistake, they bought the licenses to almost anything they could get their hands on, and it wound up costing them big time.
Well, some new company has obviously bought the rights to reproduce figures from the original MEGO molds.
http://www.classictvtoys.com/
These figures will only be sold through collector stores.
The good news is the return of MEGO figures. The bad news is that we probably won't be seeing any of the really good stuff. No STAR TREK or WORLDS GREATEST SUPER HEROES because those licenses belong to other companies. The only interesting line is SPACE: 1999. Unfortunately, the only figures are Alan Carter, Paul Morrow, Captain Zantor, and the Mysterous Alien. What? No Commander Koenig? He was only the star of the show. This line was released by MEGO overseas in the 70s because Mattell owned the US rights. That line consisted of the four figures listed above and Koenig. This must mean that Martin Landau did not give his consent to a rerelease of his likeness. Call me crazy, but this is like making a line of TREK figures with no Kirk, Spock, or McCoy included. Without Koenig, what's the point?
This company is also making a big mistake by producing figures of characters from shows like "Happy Days" and "The Brady Bunch". Not only did poor choices like these sink MEGO, but they also didn't do much for that no-name company that made these same lines (along with "Babylon 5") about 10 years ago (I can't remember their name).
So, if you love MEGO figures, I guess this is good news. It's just a shame they can't get ahold of the ones that made the company great.

Has the release date for the BSG figures changed?? I first heard October. Then, after hearing some of the ComicCon reports, it said that they will be released in December??
Which is it??

I do have them! Just because i said that as an example doesn't mean i myself didn't find the first set. It goes on from 1 to 72 correct. Then it goes on to series 2 which has Galactica 1980 cards from G1 to G20. I don't have those and aren't to bothered by that. The next set is 'Colonial Warrriors' which has only 10 but only goes up to leiutenant Bojay. The last three sets are The Matt busch artiFEX cards N1 - N6 !:20 packs. The hand drawn SketchaFEX cards 1:20 packs. and finally the autographed cards set of 1:20 pack cards.
I know all this because i have the first set of cards.
Don't go over board buddy. I was just making an example of th trading cards because tracking down certain sets aren't always easy.
Peace

You could have mentioned that you had them. As for the fact that tracking down certain sets isn't easy, well...that's the collector game. Companies do that on purpose. They hope to get people to buy more and more looking for those "subsets", as well as those special autographed cards. It wouldn't matter if the cards were stocked in every 7/11 in the country, they would still be hard to come by.

The newest issue of Tomart's Action Figure Digest features the latest offerings from Majestic Studios. For the 12" BSG figures, it says the first two (Cylon and Apollo) will ship out in November. Starbuck and Adama will follow in early 2005. Also, the gold Cylon will be an exclusive released at a later date. However, the real good news is that the uniforms we've seen in photos are prototypes, and that the released figures will feature more detailed tailoring along with the addition of insignias.

I've just read at figures.com that Boomer, Athena, Imperious Leader and Lucifer could all make it to action figuredom!
In the latest issueof Previews magazine (a catalogue sold at comic shops) you can order the series one release of Apollo and the Cylon Centurion.
