Default The Old Generation vs. The New

Got this in the box today:

30 Years Difference

1974: Long hair
2004: Longing for hair

1974: KEG
2004: EKG

1974: Acid rock
2004: Acid reflux

1974: Moving to California because it's cool
2004: Moving to California because it's warm

1974: Trying to look like Marlon Brando or Liz Taylor
2004: Trying NOT to look like Marlon Brando or Liz Taylor

1974: Seeds and stems
2004: Roughage

1974: Hoping for a BMW
2004: Hoping for a BM

1974: The Grateful Dead
2004: Dr. Kevorkian

1974: Going to a new, hip joint
2004: Receiving a new hip joint

1974: Rolling Stones
2004: Kidney Stones

1974: Being called to the principal's office
2004: Calling the principal's office

1974: Disco
2004: Costco

1974: Parents begging you to get your hair cut
2004: Children begging you to get their heads shaved

1974: Passing the drivers' test
2004: Passing the vision test

Just in case you weren't feeling too old today, this will certainly change things Each year the staff at BeloitCollege in Wisconsin puts together a list to try to give the faculty a sense of the mindset of this year's incoming freshmen. Here's this year's list:

The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1985. They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.

Their lifetime has always included AIDS.

Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.

The CD was introduced the year they were born.

They have always had an answering machine.

They have always had cable.

They cannot fathom not having a remote control.

Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.

Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.

They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.

They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.

They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.

They never heard: "Where's the Beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel" or "de plane Boss, de plane."

They do not care who shot J. R. and have no idea who J. R. even is.

McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers.

They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.

Pass this on to the other old fogies on your list. Notice the larger type? That's for those of you who have trouble reading the smaller print!

You can remember 8 tracks, you say? I can remember when my parents had a giant 8 track player that took up a shelf the width of the TV and my friends were envious cause they thought it was state of the art and hip. I can even remember when the golden arches of Mickey D's covered the width of the restuarant.

Heck, I can even remember when I watched Adam West in Batman and thought the show was high production with classic acting.

I was born in the mid 70's so I remember quite a bit of these!

I wish my younger days would come back from time to time. Those were the good days!

My parents remember buying candy bars for a nickel. I still remember as a child in the early 80's going downtown to the penny candy store and coming home with two bags full of candy.

"When 900 years old you reach...look as good, you will not, mm?" Yoda the Wise.

In 1985, the original Star Wars trilogy had already been completed by two years.

I guess it makes me think in shock when I talk to college kids at the Karaoke Bar I work at, and remember that Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi were finished before they were born. They may have seen the Special Edition trilogy in the late 90's....but they may NEVER have gotten to see the original versions of the trilogy as shown in 1977, 1980, and 1983.

(sigh) Time to break out the walker and the depends.

Well since I feel like an old fart at 37, and some of you lads and lasses are older than me, that officially makes you older types Really-Old-Farts.

And as Forrest Gump might say, Farters are as farters do.

Ahahahaha!!!
An old Klingon greeting is, and I do mean an old Klingon's greeting, "I hope you fart well", as well as, "Today is a good day to fart."

Not only do Klingons fart dust...but they do so with great vehemence. (It is almost as feared and revered a thing as a Klingon Battle Cry....only with more olfactory based shock effects. ) Maybe more feared than revered.

:roft:

Martok2112

Actually, the Klingon greeting/well wishing in that particular vein is more of a battle challenge.

"I'll fart ye' to Sto'Vo'Kor!" (Or Gre'hor..depending on how you feel about the person you are about to flatulate against.)

I'm not even 30 yet (that happens next year ) and I find myself saying this to my family younger than me. These kids nowadays have it even easier than I did at their age. I waorked all through high school just so that my parents didn't have to put themselves in debt to pay for things for me the last 4 yrs of my pre-adult life.

I hear ya there, Arlene. Thankfully, I do not have kids yet...but I can appreciate where you are coming from.

As for preparing to turn thirty, I have but two things to say:

First, an early happy birthday wish! May your day prove to be truly special.

And second: (throws on large brown robe with hood pulled over head)

(dark foreboding voice

WELCOME SISTER, WE'VE BEEN EXPECTING YOU! MUA HA HA HA HA HA!
