Tom saw Ray!
I'll give it a
One of the highlites of this movie is the extraordinarly fluid performance of Jamie Fox. I have to admit, I was not a fan of his comedies. And basically ignored him. But here he does such an amazing performance that I woldn't be surprised to see him earn an Oscar. His portrayal of Ray Charles is perfect. He is so good that you forget completely that you are watching an actor and you actually believe you ARE looking at Ray Charles. Very rarely have I seen a performance that could do that so well.
The story though is a B-.
There are some wonderful moments. Especially with his mother. And it has a great finale. But his journey through affairs and drug use are remarkably mediocre. Its not bad. But it doesn't realy add to the film. its more like adding it in to stay true to the story without contributing much energy or entertainment to the plot. Basically its stuff we see in so many films.
I think this ranks as a really nice rental. But not a film for a date or the family. And actually I wouldn't suggest bringing the kids. I doubt kids would have the kind of maturity and patience to enjoy this kind of film.
But its a good rental.
