Default Galactica as a secular religion

I realized recently that science fiction is a type of secular religion for fans. By this I mean that the significance fans get from the material, the pleasure they get from watching it, has a semi-religious aspect. In religion, a person studies the texts, becomes familiar with the tenants of the faith and becomes conversant in what the beliefs are. With Battlestar Galactica, (and any other science fiction series you can name:Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5, Doctor Who and so on) fans memorize the episodes, revel in the trivia of the show and become familiar with the themes and characters of the show.

In religion, there are core beliefs that are embraced by the faithful as the true word. There are conservaties who will not accept any variation or reinterpretation in what they believe. Similarly, in science fiction fandom, there are fans who recognize the canon and continuity of their particular show or movie. These fans reject any noodeling around with the show they hold dear to their hearts.

If this is the case, call me a Battlestar Galactica fundementalist. I love the original series and derive great enjoyment from watching it. I believe the show is worthy of affection and continuation. I recognize that the series had flaws but evan beautiful gems have flaws. I am deeply offended at the sensless changes that have been foisted on the premise of Battlestar Galactica.

In all religions, there have been divisions among the faithful. In Judiasm there are conservitives and there are those who are reformed. With Islam there are Sunnis and Shiites. Christians have Protestents and Catholics and many variations therein. I fear that in the new year, there may be a split within the ranks of Battlestar Galactica fans. If Moore's abomination becomes a series, it may attract people who are not familiar with the classic series. Fans of the original show may become a faction of Battlestar Galactica fans as a whole.

I think it is important for fans of the original show to be active and vocal in their beliefs. Write letters to protest the mini series. Write to the people responcible for its production. Let the sponsors know that you are upset and that you will boycott their products. Work to keep Battlestar Galactica true to its roots, vibrant and alive.

Very good analogy Bijou.

And when all seems lost and TPTB throw us to the lions, what we have left is the most important tenet of religion: faith.

Belief that against all odds, somehow what is in our heart will become the world around us.
