Default BG videogame - interesting tidbit

Hi everyone,

There's been an ongoing debate as to whether or not the Vivendi Interactive videogame of "Battlestar Galactica" is tied to the remake or the original series. I'm currently interviewing some folks associated with the game; hopefully we'll have some firm answers soon.

I'm also aware of something which HASN'T been publicly disclosed yet.

Both Richard Hatch and Dirk Benedict have recorded parts for the upcoming videogame. And they're participating as Apollo and (male) Starbuck who visit the young version of William Adama via time travel. I wasn't permitted further details of the dialogue or storyline with these characters. For all we know, two characters appear to the young Adama, voiced by Richard and Dirk, who talk with him. We never know who they are, but to original series fans, it's obvious. Again, I don't know how Universal is handling this. They did read as Apollo and Starbuck.

The Vivendi Universal Interactive game is tied into the remake series, ie. the name "William Adama" as one example. The character of Cain is also within the game. (I didn't learn the first name, though.) Personally, I think Vivendi Universal is trying to appeal to fans of both the original series and the new one. They're hedging their bets in case this mini-series isn't a total success, or that (ahem) another producer is able to relaunch his own version.

The original game concept back in 2000 didn't deal with a prequel. And, in fact, the main character was a generic Colonial Warrior assigned to the original series Galactica, flying missions in space-borne combat (such as the current game release) AND the ability to land, get out of the cockpit and walk around in a third-person shooter environment against the Cylons. (I reported this years ago on BG.com and BP.com, as well as various bboards.)

Back to the game release...

Continuity-wise, though, I still don't understand how the original series Apollo and Starbuck could be visiting the remake series Adama... Hopefully we'll learn more about that soon. I understand that some folks aren't too interested in that news getting leaked, since there's an obvious marketing focus on the new BG remake series.

Remember this: The different business units at Universal have different interests, different priorities.

I have heard, too, that additional BG games are under consideration, depending on the success of this one. For which series, I know not.

VIVENDI UNIVERSAL GAMES TO PUBLISH BATTLESTAR GALACTICA FOR NEXT-GENERATION VIDEOGAME SYSTEMS

Science Fiction Classic Comes to Life as Interactive Entertainment to Coincide with Series' 25th Anniversary and SCI_FI TV Miniseries

LOS ANGELES — Vivendi Universal Games (VU Games) announced today that the universe of the classic science fiction TV series Battlestar Galactica will expand in the form of a multi-platform video game. Battlestar Galactica will debut on both the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system and the Xbox(TM) video game system from Microsoft in fall 2003.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the hit TV series Battlestar Galactica, which tells the story of the last surviving human colony on the run from an evil robotic race, and in search of its mythical homeworld, Earth. The series was produced by Universal Television and Glen A. Larson and was first broadcast on ABC in September 1978. Starring Lorne Green, Richard Hatch and Dirk Benedict, this epic space saga went on to become a veritable sci-fi classic. Although only 36 episodes were created, Battlestar Galactica has enjoyed syndication success for the last two decades, most recently on the SCI_FI Channel.

The Battlestar Galactica interactive game is a story-driven space action-adventure that takes place at the end of the Cylon-Colonial Wars, 40 years prior to the setting of the original TV series. In the game, players will assume the role of Ensign William Adama in his critical first assignment as a pilot aboard the great Battlestar warship Galactica. It is the turning point of the war and the tragic making of a hero.

In heated battles against the insidious, mechanical power of the Cylons, players will pilot a wide array of ships, from a sleek Viper to a heavy bomber, and undertake numerous defensive, assault, escort, infiltration and reconnaissance missions. Players will improve their rank and gain the command of up to three wingmen as they increase their experience and skills in combat. "Battlestar Galactica will have an epic feel with dramatic rendered cinematic sequences setting the tone for massive battles in deep space," said Jim Wilson, EVP of Development, VU Games. "The game will extend the Battlestar experience for new and old fans, enabling them to engage directly in Adama's first tour of duty."

The original series will be released later this year on home video and DVD. In addition, a new Battlestar Galactica miniseries will debut on the SCI_FI Channel in December. Currently in production, the miniseries is written by Ronald D. Moore (Roswell, Mission: Impossible II, Star Trek: First Contact) and directed by Michael Rymer (Queen of the Damned), with David Eick (American Gothic, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys) and Moore serving as executive producers. The beloved Battlestar Galactica gets a modern twist when SCI_FI re-imagines the groundbreaking series with stars Edward James Olmos (Stand and Deliver Oscar nominee, Miami Vice Golden Globe winner) and Mary McDonnell (Dances With Wolves) at the helm.

The Battlestar Galactica game is being developed by Warthog Games. The game has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

Went on VUgames site myself: OK for game news this is in the wrong category, I am leaving it here for the video news though. This is why it belongs to the G03 (I'm only being good because this IS the news forum) mini:

from synopsis on VU games site:
One Man...One Universe...Thousands of Cylons...
It is the end of the sixth millennium in the era of the Cylon Wars. The mechanical Cylons, who were once created as android slaves, revolted against the Humans and were exiled into the stars. Ten years ago they returned...The skies over Caprica turned black with Cylon Raiders whose single plan was to wipe out the Human race. For ten years the Colonial survivors have fought a vicious war against the evil mechanical empire. Begin your heroic journey through the Battlestar Galactica universe as the fearless, young Adama, and help lead the fleet of Colonials to survival.

There is a thread in the review area for the video game.

Default BG Game

(Added from submissions)

"Hi everybody,

You'll be pleased to know that Richard and Dirk are in the game sorta, as Apollo and Starbuck. Their voices only come on to encourage game players, however, their characters aren't in the game.
Both of them taped the voice-overs at Universal 2 weeks ago. In addition, Richard had previously landed the role of Paulus, completely by accident when his agent had sent him out for an audition. Robin Atkin-Downes of B5 fame also has a part since they have the same agent. Kudos to Richard!!!

Sophie."

Yet another take on the game progress.
