I would say it a must that the Galactica or any battle star will have all the support craft onboard from Transport shuttles as we have seen in the show. Moreover, the ability to refuel would be a must also considering the amount of fuel the viper eat up while in combat. In addition, I thing that the shuttles should have some forms of weapons to defend against attack.
They should have other small craft onboard also perhaps for maintance, damage control like the workbees in star trek. and if necessary troop transports in a mission required it.
