Post Office Mail the Universal Entertainment Group

PRESS RELEASE: "BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (4-hour miniseries) - SCI FI re-imagines the groundbreaking and beloved series in which 'a rag, tag fugitive fleet' of the last remnants of mankind searches for its true home. Fleeing the aliens responsible for the slaughter of their homeworld, the Battlestar Galactica survivors must meet a whole new set of challenges. This intriguing twist on a classic will be written by writer Ronald D. Moore (Roswell, Mission Impossible II) with Breck Eisner (Steven Spielberg's Taken; The Invisible Man) attached to direct. Distributed by USA Cable Entertainment, the Project will be executive produced by David Eick (American Gothic, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Spy Game)." The new miniseries is a re-imagining, and not a continuation, of the original Battlestar Galactica series, and may not include the original cast, characters, and themes! The five primary Battlestar Galactica Online Petitions are available for you to sign and show your support for Battlestar Galactica. The five petitions listed here are endorsed by BattlestarGalactica.com. Petition #1 is the Battlestar Galactica Revival Petition to signal the sincere hopes that original cast members (and their characters) be considered for regular roles in the new Battlestar Galactica pilot/ongoing series. Petition #2 is the Battlestar Galactica DVD Petition to urge Vivendi Universal and Studios USA to seriously consider the release of ALL episodes of the original Battlestar Galactica television series on DVD/VHS formats. Petition #3 is the Battlestar Galactica New Series Petition aimed directly at the current Sci-Fi Channel happenings and utilizes stronger wording. Petition #5 is the Battlestar Galactica Sci-Fi Advertiser Boycott Petition and states that the thousands of fans are left little choice but to fight back in the only way left to us. Sign the four additional Battlestar Galactica Online Petitions

The four additional Battlestar Galactica Online Petitions are also available for you to sign and show your support for Battlestar Galactica. The Battlestar Galactica Richard Hatch Petition respectfully requests that Richard Hatch make his trailer, "Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming" available to be shown on the Internet. Richard Hatch -IS- listening! If you agree with the petition, then sign the petition to make your voice heard. The Battlestar Galactica Sci-Fi Management Petition requests a change in management at the Sci-Fi Channel. The petition urges the Sci-Fi Channel to focus more on sci-fi programming, including Battlestar Galactica, instead of broadcasting non sci-fi television shows, or axing sci-fi shows that have done well, such as Lexx and Farscape. The Battlestar Galactica Save Starbuck Petition is a humorous petition, but for a serious matter: Ron Moore's new Battlestar Galactica mini-series script for the Sci-Fi Channel calls for Starbuck to become a female! Starbuck, one of the original series' most popular characters, becomes Kara "Starbuck" Thrace in the new mini-series, and "Starbuck" is merely her radio call sign. If you want Starbuck to remain a male and make your voice heard, be sure to sign the Battlestar Galactica Save Starbuck Petition. Finally, the Battlestar Galactica No Re-Imagining Petition is a succinct petition that supports Richard Hatch's "Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming" continuation concept over the Ron Moore re-imagining felgercarb. You can make a difference, so be sure to sign the four additional petitions, after you sign the five primary petitions!

Big News Coming!

Atlantiaviper posted an interesting report at the Sci-Fi Channel BBoard. Atlantiaviper is reported/rumored to be an insider involved with the new mini-series. Atlantiaviper writes: "They are ecstatic over at Universal today, and when I say they're ecstatic, I mean they're downright giddy over there. My source couldn't talk openly this morning, but I managed to get enough to know that they've just made another casting coup for Galactica. The words 'Oscar caliber' and 'people will sit up and take notice' were used. How did they get this person? 'They thought the script was one of the best they'd read in years.' The production itself is still going before the cameras at the end of March and is battling to stay on budget -- even at $14-16 million, they're struggling. A Sharon Valerii has been cast as well -- Kelly Hu. Interestingly, Hu is also appearing in X-Men 2, produced by none other than Tom DeSanto."

New Galactica Page at the Sci-Fi Channel

The Sci-Fi Channel has published a major update to their Battlestar Galactica web site. After the opening Cylon red-eye animation, there is a new mini-series logo and article entitled "Sci-Fi Readies Battlestar Galactica". The article mentions that: "SCI FI has signed director Michael Rymer (Queen of the Damned) and actors Jamie Bamber (HBO's Band of Brothers) and Katee Sackhoff (Halloween: Resurrection) for the new four-hour original miniseries Battlestar Galactica. Production begins in Vancouver in March. Battlestar Galactica will air exclusively on SCI FI in late 2003. The beloved Battlestar gets a modern twist when SCI FI re-imagines the groundbreaking series in which 'a ragtag fugitive fleet' of the last remnants of humanity searches for its true home. Fleeing the mechanoid Cylon race responsible for the slaughter of their human colonies, the Battlestar Galactica survivors must meet a new set of challenges in order to escape pursuers hell-bent on human extinction. This intriguing take on a classic creates an epic miniseries with action, adventure and family drama. British actor Bamber, 29, will play Apollo, a role originated in the classic TV series by Richard Hatch. Oregon native Sackhoff, 22, will play a female Starbuck; the character, a male in the series, was played by Dirk Benedict. (See the SCI FI Wire story.) Produced exclusively for SCI FI, Battlestar Galactica is written by Ronald D. Moore (Roswell, Mission: Impossible II, Star Trek: First Contact) with David Eick (American Gothic, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys) and Moore serving as executive producers." Also on the updated web site is a letter from Ron Moore that some have entitled, "Ron Moore Gives Fandom The Finger". Sci-Fi Channel's Digitally Remastered Episodes

The Sci-Fi Channel recently broadcast a commercial regarding the Battlestar Galactica marathon taking place from Feb. 17 to Feb. 21. The commercial mentions that all of the Battlestar Galactica episodes have been digitally remastered. Battlestar Galactica fan LordStarFyre1 commented on this announcement with a note at the Sci-Fi Channel BBoard: "Okay, let's clear this up. When Sci-Fi claims this is Digitally Remastered, they are telling the truth. They aren't claiming that the EFX have been re-done. Galactica (as well as any other TV series from back then) was shot on film, then transferred to tape, via telecine. What they did for this is went back and re-transferred all the film originated material, as well as the audio tracks, and put it into a digital format (most likely done with the DVD releases in mind). Granted, it might have been nice if they went in and paint boxed the scratches, but what I've seen so far is substantially better quality than what's been released to date." Many thanks to LordStarFyre1 for posting the update at the Sci-Fi BBoard.

Sci Fi Names Galactica Leads

A new article was published at Sci Fi Wire (news service of the Sci Fi Channel). The article mentions that: "The Sci Fi Channel has cast the key roles of Starbuck and Apollo for its upcoming original miniseries Battlestar Galactica, based on the 1978-'80 TV series. Oregon native Katee Sackhoff (Halloween: Resurrection), 22, will play a female Starbuck in executive producer Ronald D. Moore's reimagination of the series, Sci Fi announced. Meanwhile, British actor Jamie Bamber (HBO's Band of Brothers), 29, will play Apollo. In the original series Starbuck was a male character played by Dirk Benedict, while Apollo was played by Richard Hatch. Is this really the Moore script?

Michael Faries commented on the Battlestar Galactica remake script that is floating around: "For the record: The Battlestar Galactica remake script which seems to be circulating around IS the remake script. It isn't a phony. It's nearly identical to the one I was provided back in November 2001, save what I received was .rtf format (Rich Text Format) and the script floating around is .doc (Microsoft Word format). And for the record, in case anyone's curious: I did not leak the script that's floating around. I am understandably curious who did -- and where they got it from. Lastly, do note that there have been changes made to the script since that copy was submitted. Some of the reviews and fan feedback led to changes. Sadly, not enough changes, imho. Either Richard Hatch's or Tom DeSanto's efforts would have been vastly preferred." The script was recently posted at the Sci-Fi Channel BBoard, then deleted a day later by BBoard staff. For Michael's complete report, be sure to visit the following link at Colonial Fleets.

Update from Michael Faries

Michael Faries posted a new report at the Sci-Fi Channel BBoard, and mentioned that: "I don't have the figures in front of me, and I doubt anyone within the production would go public with specifics for verification. I understand from sources that the production started with under $10 million (U.S.). I've been told it's closer to $9 million; others say it's closer to $10 million. - There haven't been any cutbacks. - No money is being pulled from the production; rather: - Production costs versus available $$ are a problem. - The production simply doesn't have enough $$, imho, to deliver an incredible production design. (I imagine the producers, set designer, and others aren't too thrilled by the barebones budget either.) The production, from what I understand, is discovering that casting isn't coming as cheaply as hoped. And set designs and potential f/x are being augmented to defray potential costs." For the complete report and more information, be sure to visit the following link at the Sci-Fi BBoard.

New report from Shawn O'Donnell of BattlestarFanClub.com

Shawn O'Donnell of BattlestarFanClub.com posted a new report at the Sci-Fi Channel BBoard. Among the several items mentioned in the report, Shawn stated that: "The budget of the new production continues to drop like a rock, falling from a proposal of around $10 million to now around $9 million, I would expect the budget to fall even further. Matter of fact a CGI effects person was so disgusted with the proposed budget that they opted out of doing the revised Battlestar Galactica and went back to the show that they were working on, with a low budget, but quite a bit better funded than this project." Shawn also states that: "Richard Hatch was indeed offered a cameo part in the reimagined Battlestar Galactica last week (note: I said reimagined and not prequel) and turned it down." Also reported: "Ronald Moore recently mentioned that he is focusing on 'Carnivale' more so than on Galactica at this time. That is just a decoy and untrue, he remains very involved, this is an attempt by TPTB to deflect the critics by appearing to move their Golden Boy to another project, this is to take the heat off of him and themselves while they continue to do what they've been doing. This is the commonly known 'bait and switch'. Fact: TPTB have lost hope in trying to convert the established Battlestar Galactica fans, they are now busy mining other fans bases (like Star Trek, for instance)." Shawn also mentions: "David Eick refers to this project as 'Melrose Place in Space', funny, I called it that a long time ago, guess he 'borrowed' my line. I think 'Battlestar 90120' or 'VERY Lost in Space' would be just as appropriate." For Shawn O'Donnell's complete report, check out the following link at the Sci-Fi BBoard.

Michael Faries posted one of the various rewrites of the original 1978 "Saga of a Star World" script at Colonial Fleets. Casting Report at the Sci-Fi Channel BBoard

Michael Faries posted a casting report at the Sci-Fi Channel BBoard. The report mentions that: "Ronny Cox is on the short list to become William 'Husker' Adama, if he hasn't already been signed. Another cast member of 'Farscape' may join, too, although I haven't confirmed which one. There was also a rumor circulating that Stargate SG-1's Richard Dean Anderson was considered as Baltar. That is not happening, though. (Anderson as Baltar??) And, yes, Mary McDonnell (Dr. Carter's mother from 'E.R.', the President's wife from 'ID4' and Stands-With-A-Fist from 'Dances with Wolves') is confirmed as a contender for Laura Roslin." Artists needed for Battlestar Galactica 25th Anniversary

New report from Micheleh at Colonial Fleets: "That's right! I've just about finished the logo, and am ready to start laying out a poster design and designs for the programs, etc. I think it would be a great idea to use Battlestar Galactica artwork from the fans! At this time, we can't offer pay, but the artist will be credited, and all work should be signed, of course. Plus, the person or persons will just *have* to be at the convention to personally autograph their work! Character and ship scenes are both welcome. Anyone interested can PM me, or email me at the following address. Thanks!"
