Just how exactly are the V designs Space:1999 ripoffs? I'm a big fan of Space:1999 and I don't see the correlation between the two.

Re: "V" Ship Concepts and Plans
I can see the similarities with the Eage. Both designs are modual in original with the same front and rear sections mixesd with different moduals.
Nice connection!

Re: "V" Ship Concepts and Plans
As Reaper pointed out, the modular design concept is used in the same way, but it's not like Space:1999 owned the concept itself. I see a similar use of the concept, but it's hardly a "ripoff".
Space:1999 and V were productions that were made 10 years apart anyways.

I wouldn't bet an intellectual copyright on it.

There might very well be, but if Keith Wilson didn't have a gripe with it, then I don't see why anyone else would. When you're a production designer and you've moved on to other projects 10 years later, it's probably not important, especially after the show's moved out of the public consciousness.

Re: "V" Ship Concepts and Plans
Shrug. I'm just saying...... Look what they had to do with the new Star Trek movie. The Enterprise had to be changed enough so that it didn't look exactly like the 1960's type too closely. It also had to break with the Berman Drek "style".
In these days, intellectual property rights is a very touchy thing-especially after you've thrown a bum, like Rick Berman, and his gang of misfits out of your studio, and off the FRANCHISE.

Re: "V" Ship Concepts and Plans
I thought that The Eagle was designed by Brian Johnson..
but most designs seen on screen are based on someone work these days .. in one form or an other.

They didn't change the movie Enterprise because of intellectual property rights- is that what you're suggesting? Also, the idea of changing a design by whatever percentage so you don't infringe on someone else's design is a myth.

George Lucass and Glen Larsen didn't think so.

Re: "V" Ship Concepts and Plans
Folks -
I'm not saying that the whole "intellectual property" issue isn't interesting, but at this point, it seems to be taking over the topic. If you want, I can move all of those posts and start a new thread so the discussion can continue. If the discussion is finished, then get back to the topic at hand please? Remember? "V Concepts and Designs"....
Thanks,

I didn't say that intellectual property rights are a joke- quite the opposite. I meant that this concept of 'you can change a design by a certain percentage (I've heard 10%, I've heard 20%, etc.) and you can't be sued' is not true. There is no such rule. Anything that can be proven to be a 'derivative' of the original work is indeed and infringement.
This is why, despite some conceptual similarities, any design from 'V' could be an infringment on something from Space 1999: nobody would ever look at one of the V ships and say 'hey, didn't I see that in Space 1999'?. Similarly, no judge would consider one a 'derivative work' of the other.

Re: "V" Ship Concepts and Plans
So the Eagle and the V ships have a modular design concept at their heart, they still look nothing alike.
This argument is about as worthy as Star Wars v Battlestar Galactica – and we know how that ended.
