Default what was your first video

Well, people used to ask, "What was the first record you bought?" Well, now it's time for "What was the first video you ever bought or received as a gift?"
This would have been something between the late 1970s and mid-1980s, when VCRs first became commonplace and movies and episodes of TV shows began to be sold individually to the general public. Did you have a VHS or Betamax player, or maybe a laserdisc player?
Or maybe you were one of the lucky ones whose parents owned a sound movie projector, and bought (gasp!) movies in a canister?
As for me, the first movie I bought was "Big Wednesday," which still is my favorite surf movie. I bought it on VHS.

My first video they paid me in candy, and made me sign a paper saying I was eighteen years old...
Oh, what video tape did I buy first?
Probably Wrath of Khan.

Most of my VHS were recorded from cable.

My first VHS was a gift from my twin, a collection of three music videos by Duran Duran called "Dancing on the Valentine".

She also provided me with my first DVDs, two together as a gift, The Hallmark production of "Merlin", and "The 10th Kingdom".

First VHS movie, eh?

Boy, that's a tough one....!

I never really had regular access to a VHS player until the late 80's and I've bought, traded and sold a lot of tapes since then.

Hmmmmm.....

Well, the best of my recollection tells me that the first pre-recorded VHS movie was the extended version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I remember going right out and buying it as soon as it was available.

For DVD, it would be much easier as I bought a DVD on eBay while I was trying to decide on a DVD player - that would be the 2-disk set for Supergirl - The Collector's Edition.

Best,
Bryan

I'm pretty sure the first vidoe I personally owned was Conan the Barbarian, and that was only because I won it in a competition. Mum and Dad hadn't had the video very long and we rented tapes becasue it was too expensive to BUY them!!.

The first DVD I owned was Gladiator. I had that a full 6 months before we bought the DVD player/system (with hometheatre 5.1 etc),

On a side note I had owned a DTS CD of Alan Parsons Projects album 'On Air" for 18 months before that, but again had not equipment to play it on. until we got the DVD player
Final impetus to purchase the DVD was cost of technology coming down enough to be mainstream not early adopter (marketers will know what I mean) and the release of TOS BSG on DVD.
Husband knew he would lose me to a friends couch for whole weekends if we didn't get the means to view it at home (I even had places booked..)

Cheers,
Lara

First video. I think it was Star Wars. Pre-recorded video's was something my mum & dad thought was a waste of money so we never got them as gifts, but Star Wars was an exception!

First DVD. The Exorsist. I bought this over a year before I bought a DVD player. My PC had a DVD drive, so I wanted to check it out. Plus The Exorsist was still banned on British TV at the time, so I was eager to see what all the fuss was about. Like Lara, I waited until the price of DVD players started to fall before I bought one.

Hi -

My first video purchase wasn't actually a movie at all. It was the concert video "Exit, Stage Left" by Rush (the band not the guy.) I honestly can't remember what the first movie was, maybe "Lady and the Tramp". How's that for extremes?

gee, hmmmmm...... that question is so easy for me.

My first VHS tape was my brother in law's copy of the Battlestar Galactica pilot movie. I played it so much over the years that I had it that I eventually killed it!

Oh my! I used to rent a lot of videos when I were younger, cos buying them really wasn't an option (In the early-mid 80's, videos of the newest films cost something around £40-80!!!!!!).

If I remember rightly though, the first video I actually bought was.... a volume of Star Trek : TNG (season 5 - the episodes 'Aquiel' & 'Face Of The Enemy')

First DVD? Hmmm, that's a bit tricky, I think it was possibly the Alien Legacy box set.

First VHS: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

First DVD: Either "Bulliett" or "The Right Stuff", maybe both.

I'll also go a step further:

First Cassette Tape: Alice in Chains "Dirt"

First tape (and later replaced as my first CD) Alan Parsons Project 'Turn of a Friendly Card' AND Mike Oldfield 'QE2'
Both bought at the same time, both times. The tapes do honourable service, still, in the car, the CDs are played often..

I'm too old to have a 'first MP3 download'...

Cheers,
Lara
