Some BSG Fans Looking For Continuation

"Battlestar Galactica" fans who would like to see a continuation of the original 1978 series are putting together an organized effort to raise $10,000 to go toward purchasing ads in major publications to promote their effort.

Colonial Fan Force officials, in a press release, said they want to purchase full-page ads in the Sept. 17 issue of Daily Variety as well as the September issue of Cinescape. The ads, officials said, are intended to send a message of support to series creator Glen A. Larson, who still holds the movie rights to the "Battlestar Galactica" franchise. The ads also will apparently target Tom DeSanto, a producer with "The X-Men" films who was part of an original "Galactica" series project for Fox with Bryan Singer before their schedules made it impossible to continue. Singer and DeSanto reportedly had planned to do a continuation series, different from the re-imagination that ultimately was done for Sci-Fi Channel. That re-imagination ended up scoring the third-highest ratings of Sci-Fi Channel's history, and was picked up for 13 episodes to premiere this fall as a regular series on the cable channel.

"Larson stated at Galacticon that he would pursue a film version of the original 'Galactica' if support among the fanbase remained strong following the rboadcast of the Sci-Fi Channel's re-imagining," said Bill Gordon, a spokesman for the project. The Galacticon was held last October in Los Angeles, two months before the Sci-Fi miniseries debuted.

"He also said that he would want to make that film with Tom DeSanto. These ads are meant to send a clear signal that support for such a continuation does, in fact, remain as strong as ever."

It is unclear if DeSanto would even be available to work on a BSG movie within the next three or four years. He's been busy working on "The Transformers" live-action movie, and already is attached to a third "X-Men" film. It is unclear, however, if he will be joining Singer in the remake of "Logan's Run."

The ads will apparently contain the likenesses of original stars Richard Hatch (Apollo) and Dirk Benedict (Starbuck). Hatch has been a key person in the revival of the "Galactica" franchise, and expressed dismay when Sci-Fi announced it would do a reimagination instead of a continuation project. He said he supports the current ad campaign.
