What "year" does TOS take palce?
Hey all! I watched Saga Of A Star World yesterday and it piqued a bit of curiosity. What "year" would TOS be taking place? I remember the "7th millenium" being mentioned, but anyone got a ballpark guesstamation?

There was never an official timeline given, just Adar's comment about the 7th millenium and a few other tidbits. Some fans have worked out timelines, such as
http://www.msu.edu/~stacey/Galactica/gal-time.htm ,
however, these are based on some research and a lot of speculation.
As far as with respect to an Earth timeline, there is a huge contradiction if one considers Galactica 1980 to be canon. The moon shot transmission intercepted in Hand of God was from July 1969, meaning that it had to have happened some time before if it was to have traveled at light speed across space to arrive at the Galactica's location. Since 30 yahrens passed between this point and Galactica 1980, we either have a time travel conundrum or proof that G-80 was only a bad dream. My guess is that the events in TOS would have occurred well in our future since Earth was supposed to have been quite distant.

Actually couldn't the Galactica have been only about ten light years away during the hand of God episode?
I also don't get where the number 30 comes from.
But I don't think ANYONE thinks G80 is canon. It was a bad dream!

All we know for sure is that TOS occurred sometime after 1969. Whether it was a few years after 1969 or a billion years after 1969 nothing in the remainder of TOS gives us a clue.
As stated before BSG1980 takes place in 1980 but is a continuity error with TOS. Since 30 years supposedly elasped from Hand of God to the first BSG1980 episode even if the Galactica was outside Alpha Centauri during Hand of God (which is highly unlikely) the earliest BSG1980 could have occurred would be roughly 2001.

For the sake of argument, is the Colonial 'yahren' EQUAL to an Earth 'year'?

I can't specifically recall if 30 yahrens were mentioned but that is a reasonable guess given the amount of time it would take Boxey to turn into Kent McCord.
But yes, we should *never* regard G80 as canon (though it is possible to do good fanfic that reconciles the two).

I don't know about time....but in "War of the Gods", either Sheba or Starbuck said that Earth was nineteen million sectares away from the Fleet's position at that time of the series.
Now, if we knew how far a "sectare" is and how long it would take to traverse one....

I sure thought so although I may be incorrect.
