Baa Baa Black Sheep - As predicted, Pappy Boyington hits DVD: Take-off is in May!

On New Years' Day 2005, we posted a looong list (111 shows!) of TV series that our sources had said would come to DVD in the year to come. Near the top of the list was Baa Baa Black Sheep (a.k.a. Black Sheep Squadron). The Stephen J. Cannell creation ran on NBC from 1976-78, starring Robert Conrad as Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington (a real-life WW2 air ace in the U.S. Marines Corp, and a Medal of Honor awardee), and based on Boyington's autobiography. The show also included in the cast an early-in-his-career John Larroquette, about a decade before he would win 4 Emmy Awards in a row for playing "Dan Fielding" on Night Court!

On May 24th our prediction comes true: Universal has given us the heads-up this morning that they are releasing Baa Baa Black Sheep - Volume 1 on that date, in a 2-DVD set that runs 584 minutes. Presentation is exactly what you would expect: full frame video and English mono sound.

That "Volume 1 " in the title speaks volumes, though (forgive the pun), especially when tied in with the just-under-10-hour running time! The series had a 2-hour (with commercials) pilot telefilm called The Flying Misfits, and then 22 more hour-long episodes in the first season, and followed by 13 more episodes under the Black Sheep Squadron title for the second season. It looks like Universal intends to break their DVD boxes for this show up into "Volume" sets rather than "Season" sets, possibly to make the cost per set more palatable for retailers who cater to the mass market. $39.98 is the list price for this 2-disc package.

No further details are available just yet, nor is cover art. Stay tuned, though...we'll be keeping a sharp eye on this, and will bring more to you as soon as possible!

Baa Baa Black Sheep - Count on Sheep for the pilot episode! Also, menus and a 3-D look at the box.

Early last week, we jumped for joy in bringing you the formal announcement for Baa Baa Black Sheep - Volume 1: The First Adventures of The Black Sheep Squadron, due to fly off store shelves on May 24th (just in time for Memorial Day, as well as the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II).

One of the questions fans asked was whether the pilot telefilm called The Flying Misfits would be included in this box set. Universal yesterday confirmed that it would, and you can see it mentioned here in this description:

The sky's the limit for high-flying action as the popular WWII military series, Baa Baa Black Sheep (Black Sheep Squadron), comes to DVD for the first time ever! Ride along with the heroic "Black Sheep Squadron," a group of misfit Marine fighter pilots. Robert Conrad stars as the unconventional squadron leader, Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, with Simon Oakland, Dana Elcar, John Larroquette, James Whitmore Jr., Dirk Blocker, W.K. Stratton, and Robert Ginty as the pilots known as the "Terrors of the South Pacific." This thrilling double-sided 2-DVD collection is fully loaded with the first 10 episodes of Season 1, plus the original 2-hour pilot, of the war series where men were men, and the South Pacific was the place for unlimited adventure!

The other thing fans wanted, of course, was a look at the packaging for this long-awaited release. We've got that for you right here, in a 3-D skewed view, and from that we can see that Universal has used it as one of the initial releases in a newly-christened "Classic Television" series of box sets. Not only did we bring you the box art, though, we also have a look at the main menu and the special features menu as well:

Great show. I love World War II, Study World War II, reenact Wold War II, everything, culture wise I love the depiction of WWII from the '60s and '70s the best. Unlike today there was no homage (don't get me wrong, love all those flicks comeing out today) but action and advanture, most of the time by written and directed by guys who were there. Baa Baa Black sheep is no different. Heel yeah.

Well If you knew WWII like I know WWII, this series was about as far from the truth as it could be.

Not only do I have an autographed copy of Pappy's book. I have met with and talk ed his grand daughter about him. One of the nice things about living in the Seattle area, a lot of cool folks live/lived here.

Go check out Aces High WWII flight sim. You can get shot down over and over again, by a bunch or ruthless, no honor, wannabes.
