Pets...
Got pets? Want one? Talk about them here!
My dog passed away a little over a week ago, so the sadness is still strong. He was a great little mutt and very healthy until his 14th birthday. Then, he started getting sicker and sicker for about a couple of months until he just couldn't handle it anymore.
At least his pain is over.

HUGS!
I'm was so sorry about Bruno. I was incredibly sadden to hear about his pain. But atleast he don't have to deal with it no more.
I had a doggie a long time ago. He was named Champ, but I called him fumblebutt after an old tv show. It fit. He never did learn about sharp high speed turns aound slippery floor tiled corners. But I loved him.

Ravyn,
I too had a wonderful pet Ashton. She was a mix mutt I found .
Someone had left a box of puppies by the road side and I found them. I kept Ashton and found homes for the other two.
I was 16 then and she just passed away last fall. She was also thirteen. It's sad I just had her to the vet and was trying a new joint medication to help her walk better. Well I let her go outside one evening and she got out of the gate. A neighbor saw her walk to the woods. They say dogs will do that when they know it's time to go. I looked for her for two weeks, and never found her. I know she is in a better place now and without pain. There is a poem called Rainbow Bridge and it helped me alot. I'll try to find it for you.
On a BRIGHTER note!
I just recently adopted another stray. A mixed mutt too. His name is Jake. Cute little puppy. Took him to the vet and I was told he is a Sheppard St. Bernard mix. SWEET BIG Puppy now! 6 months old and weighs 50 pounds!!
I guess I'm a sucker for a cute face!

I currently have a calico cat sharing my apartment with me. I have mentioned my Phoebe a few times, and even posted some pics of her here once.

I had a sweet little budgie (parakeet) named Lorita (I think it means little parrot in spanish) for all of 7 years. Since I work from home I spent oodles of time with her. I invented this 3 tone whistle/song which I used whenever I called her name (each syllable of her name was a different tone). She got so used to it she knew her name by the 3 tone tune.
The day she died she had been very sick and we have no bird vets in our town. She fought to stay alive till I could reach her and hold her. As I held her in my hands, I whistled her 3 note name one last time. At that exact moment she let her life go.
I'm sorry, I can't get used to special friends dying, it hurts too much.

Found it!
I hope it is ok to post this poem. It is a good one, hope in some small way it will make all of you feel better. The link will take you to a site where I found the poem.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I had a precious friend die in my lap, and it was 3 years before I was ready to let another cat into my heart and home. You really do get attached to them. Phoebe and I seem to be doing better now, I understand she has 'special' needs that I need to respect, and I push them only a little in the hopes that she will learn to trust me. i talk to her a lot, too, because she understands me, and sometimes she answers. I told her I wanted to give her a bath today to clean an area she is unable to groom herself. She spent an hour pacing, first she would hide from me, then she'd sit next to me, then she'd hide again. She didn't fight me during the bath, and she napped on the sofa next to me shortly after it was over. There is progress, but she still flinches when I pet her sometimes, and she still worries where my feet are.

It's hard to lose someone you love. People are wrong if
they think that it matters whether the loved one walked
on Two Legs ...........or on Four. I'll keep you in my prayers.

I have one dog. His name is Willy.
He's around 12 years old now.
He's a German short hair pointer and
Lab mix .......and only GOD knows
what else.
When we tried to put him on a diet;
he became a natural hunter. WHile
he won't go after the LONE charcol
gray mouse that came into the house;
he'll go after everything else .........
I'll be nice and refrain his DINING habits
with his prey ......but I will say that it's
a great diet suppressent.

I love pets, but I get too attached to them and it hurts to much when they die. So right now I have none. But my spouse and daughter never give up, and bring home the strangest animals as pets. They brought me rabbits (and believe me you get tired of shovelling mountains of poop real fast), hermit crabs, and even a chicken!!! What the heck kind of pet is a chicken? That was joined by a rooster and our whole neighborhood was angry with us for being woken up at 5:00 in the morning by the blasted crowing!!! Plus they kept flying over the fence and we had the police bringing them back to our door (that's our only animal control).
And with every animal I get stuck feeding them and shovelling poop.
They finally got me a stuffed beaver and that works out just great!!!

Shiningstar, *huuuug* thank you for sharing, and for your thoughts. Yeah, he was beautiful. I thumb my nose that those who think purebreds are the best. My little four-breed mutt was amazing.
I might be getting an alopekis puppy in a month. If so, I'll post pics

Our dachsie, Simmie, crossed the Rainbow Bridge last January. We knew it was coming, she was only ten years old but she was very, very sick and fading fast. We had planned to have her put to sleep on a Friday evening, spending a last week with her doing all the things she loved, cooking her favorite foods, and basically getting used to the idea that she was leaving us. Unfortunately she didn't make it past Monday.
I had dogs die in my past, beloved pets and friends, but I was younger then. I didn't expect Simmie's loss to hit me so hard, but I was totally devastated. My wife too.
For us, the best medicine was to find another canine friend to help us through our grief. We got Hansi, another dachsund, a week after Simmie left us. Hansi has been a great comfort. Not a replacement, noting could replace Simmie in our hearts, but she has helped to ease the pain a very great deal. We got another pup just a month ago, now we are a two dachsie family!
Simmie will never be forgotten. We made a little shrine to her on a shelf in the living room, and her pictures are everywhere. My wife's Yahoo group, A Dachsie World, is dedicated to her memory. We miss her still, but we are confident she is waiting for us on the other side of the bridge, tennis ball in her mouth and tail wagging furiously, a glint of mischief in her eye...
Dang, I'm tearing up just checking my spelling as I type this...
Rayvn: I'm very sorry for your loss.

Mark that was beautiful. Yes another pet is not a replacement but sometimes it does help heal the loss.

My dog is an American Staffordshire Terrior. (Most people think he is a pit bull - and there is some truth. The Am Staff is a derivative of the Pit) His hobbies include playing fetch (seen here), sleeping (generally on my feet), and eating. In that order

Phoebe has adopted a box. She no longer sleeps on the sofa next to me, she sleeps in the box. I tried putting the box on the sofa, but she didn't go for that.
I miss her.

I now am the proud owner of a hamster named "Limbo". My family got her for me over Labor Day. She dances the limbo and sings in chipmunk fashion and is absolutely hilarious to watch. You can hear her from just about anywhere in the house even though she's upstairs, and it always makes us laugh.
Best of all, I never have to feed her or dump her poop. Just change her batteries now and again. LOL
 I CF!
