This was supposed to be the last season, the stories are supposed to be setting the stage for each of the characters to have closure in the final episode, That is now all trashed as there will now be a ninth season.

But why not have Sam and Jack getting together instead? That would have tied up the threads and could have worked (if they got rid of pete in some way. And it didn't have to be death!). Unless the producers knew that the series wasn't actually the last and did the whole Sam/Pete thing to add angst to the show.
Or the writers could have been worried that once Sam and Jack did get together then they would lose viewers. This has happened before on other shows- Star Trek Voyager to name but one.
But obviously I could never see SG1's devoted fans abandoning the program!

Stargate is pretty careful about trying to adhere to military policy (as much as they can within a scifi show, of course!) and not upset their Air Force advisors, so there is NO WAY that they would have a general get involved with a colonel under his command.
The only way Sam & Jack will get together (and I hope they do, but without spitting in the face of the regs) would be for one of them to leave the Air Force.

yeah, you're right , but I can dream.........
I don't think that one of the main characters would leave because it wouldn't be SG1 without Jack or Sam! (Unless the writeres found a loop hole in the regulations) Maybe the writers will have them getting together at the end of the show. If it ever ends

Sam could become a civilian member of the SGC, or head up a whole new department dealing with Stargate technology or something. But! She is a devoted officer, and the writers and the actors seem happy with the creepy relationship between Sam and Pete.
I have only seen up thru season 7, because that's what is out on dvd. Can't wait for season 8 to come out, but know I have too.

Welcome hammermouse.
Richard Dean Anderson, from what I understand, isn't "leaving" leaving the show.
He is stepping down as a main cast member, but he will still be around. Again from what I understand. He will be an irregular regular.
Ben Browder is stepping in as a main cast member. His character's name hasn't been released yet.
Should be a great addition.

Well....Bowder is added to SG-1 and Black will be basically replacing Tapping until she returns from maturnity leave (up to 5-6 episodes). Bowder has the presence and humor necessary to replace RDA and frankly the SG-1 team needs a 4th member to fill the RDA gap and go back on some "real missions". Many Stargate fans felt they should have moved Jack to another position off the base and kept General Hammond around or another General to head Stargate Command. Then RDA could guest star when he has the time. If everything clicks right, you could see a few more seasons of SG1 as long as the writers have ideas for episodes and finds a few memorable Goa'uld villians to foil and/or explore the mythology of those "Gods" like they used to. The Replicators as possible main villians, while interesting at first, didn't appeal to a lot of fans for the long term and maybe they could/should wrapup that story arc or send them to the Pegasus Galaxy to wipe out the Wraith...lol...j/k.
Pete and Carter getting married isn't popular, but who knows, Sam's black widow reputation may resurface again. Like others have mentioned, unless one of them leaves the Air Force, they will never get together.
