Question So how many here enjoyed EarthSea?

Ah...skiffy paid some money for a show. We only get a few decent offering a year.

So what do you think?

I'm watching now. It looks pretty good. Good actors. Though they sound rather local to be from another world. Still waiting to see where this goes.

Some of these words used are used in thread tittles the others are in posts at SciFi.com to describe the Earthsea mini

Abomination
Butchered
Garbage
Total disappointment
Extremely disappointing
Tragedy
Real stinker
Disaster
Sucks
Mutilation
Travesty
Appalling

people are really upset over there reminds me of how people feel about BSG
sounds like they did another masterful job of completely altering a story or "re-imagining" it

Then you read this by Ursula herself

http://www.ursulakleguin.com/UKL_info.html#Earthsea

I have read the books many times over the years and loved them passionately she is one of my most fav authors of all times so I'm feeling a little trepidation about this one...off to watch it now

I missed it last night - I wanted to see it all in one shot, not in 2 parts. I'll give it a look-see tonight.

WOW! Those criticisms were harsh! I never read the books. I didn't know there was a book. But by the title I kinda got the impression that there was one. Usually Skiffy picks a really horrible title. And this show had much richer ideas than I expected from your typical skiffy production.

Its ALOT better than your typical skiffy movie.

Unlike the reviews I guess that are going on at skiffy, I kinda liked it. It wasn't great. Not worth buying the dvd. But it was alot better than anything else on Monday night. I thought the miniseries had some great ideas. It was kinda plain. And my atentioned wandered alot. But I liked it. Sort of a B- sofar.

I haven't looked, but it said its continued. I'm hoping it reairs tonight. And maybe it will conclude. I hope.

ya the negative reviews are coming from those who have read the books
someone over there pointed out a handful of changes.

Some of the changes people over there have listed

Ged was 10-12 when he saved the village
His common name was Sparrowhawk and his secret name was Ged
Ged was not asked to leave Roke he stayed and got his staff
The Archmage died while saving Ged not by a dagger
Jasper didn’t betray Roke
Tenar wasn’t awarded the Priesthood she was The Eaten One
Kossil NEVER had sex with anyone
Thar Died of old age
Where is the Otak? Ged’s little animal companion
Ged never trapped the shadow with a rope, taking them both under water
The priestesses worshiped the unnamed

I’d have to say that the one I find the worst is Ged’s name, unless they switched Ged for Sparowhawk I could live with that I guess (ie secret name is Sparowhawk instead of Ged) but he must have a secret name not to have one would basically render the magic in the book pointless and meaningless. For to know someone’s secret name is to have power over them which is the very basis of a mages magical power. The whole point of going to the MageSchool is to learn the names of things and therefore gain control over them. The revelation of a secret name is a display of sacred trust and rarely done between people. If they have ignored this single component then they have failed miserably to understand the whole thing – not a good beginning

It is the same story again, they take a great story with wonder, mystery, and turn it into crap, I have not seen it and did not even know it was been made?

I read the story years ago and enjoyed it allot. It just like BSG as Rowan rightly pointed out.

I think im going to give up on TV ...it is really is turning into a load of nothing!
(Im to polite to say felgercarb!)

For me I have to say the sence of Adventure on TV is dead, there is very little left to the imagantion, does anyone feel the same way?? or is it only me?

Well I will give Earthsea a go if its ever shown here!

sorry about the tantrum Thomas

hehe. No need to worry. That's your opinion. I support it.

Though I am one of those who never read the book. So I can only judge it in terms of someone with no previous exposure to EarthSea.

Scifi really don't know how to please a fanbase.

You said it! Thomas i Recently got the StarTrek DVD1/2 tos collection and for the first time in years sat down alone and watch 2 or 3 back to back and they were great, lost of adventure, good storys, wonderfull characters.. people you could belive in. I know i did

But the effects were and are by today standards bad, but is was great.. the same with the TOS BSG, old.. a little dated... but great.

why can't the studos do the same now, the talent is out there. some of it here in the fleets, we all can't be wrong.

I tried to watch Earthsea. After 45 minutes I figured I had better things to do than continue to be bored.

A couple of friends did tell me that the story picked up after I had left. I just haven't had a chance to try again. Sci-Fi tends to repeat everything constantly so I'll probably be able to see the other parts later.

I thought the ending came rather suddenly. I can see how it might have worked well in a book. But the ending seemed a bit rushed.

Its okay. Looks great. But the directing seems weak. A bit slow in places and rushed in others.

I thought about the same thing too Tom. The visual was really good for Sci Fi, the sets were good, but the story was slow and seemed low key to me.
