review of destiny
"Destiny" is the sixth of Richard's Galactica novels, co-written by Brad Linaweaver, copyright June 2004 ibooks.
This is my review:
Destiny is much-better written than the previous two books, Paradis and the awful Rebellion, although it is still plagued with typos. I think we’ve all given up worrying about the switched roles in the books of Wilker and Salik, as well.
This is what I liked about the book: Baltar’s reflections and nightmares about the Cylon Empire; Athena’s responsibilities of the Daedalus; Athena’s memories of growing up; the odd friendship between Koren and Gar’Tokk; and the last few chapters (someone finally got it right!).
This is what I didn’t like about the book: the use of Earth time, such as hours; the decision to leave some of the passengers behind is never discussed at the beginning, it just is mentioned throughout the book; Cassie has a baby boy--in fact, she had the baby two books back, and it is now a toddler, but you STILL don’t know his name!; and why can’t Richard and his co-writers come up with better names for the new characters?!
New characters are: Elayna, Baltar’s nurse; Dr. Kim, Baltar’s physician; Sire Rigginbok, who later in the book is named Riggbok; a Noman named H’Mal; a man named Da’Veed Lindsay; Sire Opis; Lindsay’s student Etooey (oh, come on!); Rhaya’s sibling Retime; Uri’s son Adrick and Judge Diane.
Recurring characters from previous books are: Caran, Koren, Ryis, Ryis’ unnamed mistress, Gar’Tokk, Dalton, Trays and Rhaya.
Characters from the original series mentioned are: Apollo, Athena, Baltar, Bojay, Boomer, Cassiopeia, the Cylons and Imperious Leader, Iblis, Lucifer, Salik (sort of), Sheba, Starbuck, Tigh, Troy, Sire Uri and Wilker (sort of).
