Ed Kemmer, star of Space Patrol has passed away
Ed Kemmer, who starred as Commander Buzz Corry on TV's "Space Patrol" has passed away. For a generation of TV viewers, Mr. Kemmer was the Commander in Chief of the Space Patrol who led them on fantastic adventures to the outer reaches of endless space. he did it on live TV before Sputnik got off the ground. He was a hero on and off the screen. He was a fighter pilot during WWII. After flying a P051 on more than 40 combat missions, he was shot down and spent the rest of the war in a German POW camp. While in the camp, Mr. Kemmer acted in plays to entertain other POWs. After the war, he went to California to pursue a career as an actor. He eventually landed the roll of Buzz Corry in 1950. The show was very successful and lasted until 1955. There was even a weekly radio version of the show that also starred Mr. Kemmer. He went on to a long career in theatrical and television drama. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Kemmer in 2002. He was very down to earth, friendly and generous with his time. He will be missed.
