I can name that scene.... what a ripoff!
I just realized where RDM stole the first scene on the Galactica from (in the remake)! It was a submarine movie called "The Abyss", which started with a British actress (Helen Something, I think) jogging around the sub, seeing what's up, and bantering with the CO.
What a total ripoff!
If you haven't seen that movie, it's worth renting- not just to verify the scene, but the fx for the reflective water monster and the people absorbing monster are kicka**, especially for an older film.

Nuts. Was it the Deep? I always mix up the two- they're both submarine movies. In this one, they are scientists who find a russian sub with a mutating virus which becimes a monster. The comic extra is called six-pack. I'll have to check my tape library. I remember seeing the jogging scene, though.
Kirstie Alley makes a few cameos (in creepy contacts) as the evil corporate officer.

So do you remember the jogging scene at the beginning?

Westworld
The Cylons being created by humans remind me of this movie as well. The late Yul Brynner was in it.

If I remember correctly, they also had a scene like that in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am a HAL 9000 computer. I became operational at the H.A.L. plant in Urbana, Illinois on the 12th of January 1992. My instructor was Mr. Langley, and he taught me to sing a song. If you'd like to hear it I can sing it for you.
Dave Bowman: Yes, I'd like to hear it, HAL. Sing it for me.
HAL: It's called "Daisy."

HAL: Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do. I'm half crazy all for the love of you. It won't be a stylish marriage, I can't afford a carriage. But you'll look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle built for two.

i kept saying the whole opening sequence reminded me of that movie! And the anti-technology view in it.

Hmm? Elaborate. I don't see how the opening sequence is like 2001. Maybe it's just to warm and friendly an atmosphere, but I just don't see it.

What about the sex scene?
The one where Number 6 is riding Baltar and her spine glows red. That was taken straight out of "Species" (the part where Sil is riding Alfred Molina-the camera moves around to show her back and spikes begin to emerge down her spine). If that isn't a ripoff, I don't know what is!

I see it in the pacing and lack of interaction with anyone for scene after scene after scene as the Colonial liason ages and repeats similar actions. The red "visor" light watching over everything reminds me a little of HAL. And the "technology will destroy us" suspicion of technology that runs throughout the show. I am confounded by why someone that has FTL space travelling ability would settle for 1960's technology to run their battlestar. Solid state electronics and transistors over microchips?
