Thumbs down Galacticon DVD

Well, after all the delays, I was very happy to be informed that the Galacticon DVD was finally on it's way. However, when it arrived, I was shocked to be told by UPS there was a charge of £17 to be paid. This was unacceptable. Why should I pay this when I have alteady paid for the DVD through PayPal. With much sadness, I have had to return my DVD to Galacticon. I don't expect to get my money back and am very disappointed. If this had gone through the normal and post NOT through UPS, it wouldn't have been a problem.

Let me know what the total amount for the DVD, shipping and customs comes out to in US$ and I'll issue a complete refund. I apologise, and we did everything we could, but we have no control over customs.

Think he is saying if shipping was done by USPS Air Mail, the cost would be substantially less. $7 at the most depending on weight and package size. CD's or DVD's typically run about $3-4 for air mail shipping to Europe. 17£ = $31.20 USD, so I understand the shock at the bill. Do not use USPS Economy (half the cost when compared to air mail) unless you are willing to wait 3-6 months before it's delivered. It is often cheaper and faster to ship items from Europe to the States than the reverse. Custom Fees/charges typically come into play if the declared value exceeds a certain amount. If you insist on a signed receipt and tracking information then DHL/Danza would be the choice, "Air Value" offers the least expensive and fastest shipping option and only increases the delivery time by 1-3 days. "Sea/Air" is even cheaper but the delivery time are greatly increased (3-6 weeks).

Hope this helps.

Default As I posted in another thread-

Hey Michelle-

While this may seem unethical to some, I never have a moral reservation doing it because customs in other countries do have a tendency to gouge people with insane customs duties and taxes that are entirely unfair.

When you ship DVDs internationally, mark them "commercial samples" or "gift". I don't think these can be taxed and with the minimal amount of copies going out to other countries it shouldn't interfere with your order fulfillment record keeping.

If you can't do it from Galacticon, I can do it from my production company office.

John-

Don't blame Michelle. She has no control over customs or duties, file a complaint with your government officials for outrageous import tarrifs. Sorry you had to refuse the DVD, if Michelle can get it to you duty free I think you will enjoy it.

As I have refused the DVD, it is on it's way back to your office. I really don't want to say anything more on the matter

Fair enough. I did my best to offer a solution to the problem, but if you have no interest in resolving your complaint, then that is your concern. I don't know what else we can do.

It is definitely any BG fan's loss not to have this DVD. Don't lose any sleep over this, Michelle; you've definitely done everything you could to remedy the problem--and you're still tops in my book!

Hello JohnHJohnson,

I'm very sorry that if upset you so much that you decided to send it back.
A £17 delivery is an unfortunate surprise, but in North America such things are quite common.

In the UK, there is the Value Added Tax (VAT), but I believe its added to the price before on goes to the cash register. In North America (Canada, and the USA) it is the opposite custom. On sees the tag price BEFORE taxes (e.g., Federal Tax, and Provincal Tax, and/or State tax), and one expects to have it added on.

In the UK the custom is the price is the price,
and North America one shows the NON-Tax price on the tag, then EXPECTS a high price when on pays.

I don't know the way its in Australia, and New Zealand,

But the DVD were what £85 ?
so if you've paid £85, why not add £17 ?

I would have "bitten the bullet" and said its "Bloody Lord Baltars fault!"
(*ducks*)

Take care,
CaptainApollo

Capt. Apollo--JHJ was talking about the Galacticon DVD and not the BG box set. He's right about the tax being steep, but you're even more right in understanding that it isn't something anyone in the US has much control over. Unfortunately, it seems he didn't understand that Michelle was trying to make it as right for him as she could.

Many thanks to Micheleh!
My first DVD didn't have sound, and she was very understanding and sent me another DVD.
The second dvd is working and is truly amazing! This makes up for me not being able to attend the main event!

Thanks again!

Sorry to hear about your problems with the DVD. I can understand customs. Try getting a car across the Canadian border once.

But with all do respect they Galacticon people offered you a resolution, fair and simple. Using the FLeets forums to try and prove a point of there supposed "unethical" business practices is not the way i would have handled it.

Please take the issue up with them.

Thanks, Don. I'm sure John and I can handle it from here, and I thank everyone for their understanding and support.
