That didn't take long, especially compared to my wait for the Original. Don't they usually wait to release good productions on video and DVD? Usually for some kind or marketing 'prime time' like around Christmas or something? Sure makes it seem like the producers want to milk as much money as possible out of this 'thing' before interest fades...

See ya on eBay!!

Quote:
Now, to promote the first season of the new show, the pilot mini-series will come to DVD in June or July of this year, featuring all 4 hours of the two part Sci-Fi Channel mini-series uncut. Look for a 2-DVD set, in widescreen aspect ratio, and with Dolby Digital 5.1 EX and Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtracks. The total running time is 185 minutes.

Extras planned for this release are:
Deleted Scenes
Commentary by Michael Rymer (director)
"The Making of Battlestar Galactica" Documentary
All teasers and trailers
Production notes
I'm not going to say 'boo hoo' , 'cos that's not how I feel..... I'd just like to say that I've read some reviews of the UK's *region 2/4* DVD of the Galactica mini-series and it comes on one disc with the only extra being a shortened version of 'The Lowdown' (20 mins approx).

So much for the early release then.....

That's all folks!

Why the "Oh Frack!!!"? The BSG mini-series dvd-region 2 has been on sale in Europe and doing quite well (As of 3/21/2004, Amazon.co.uk Sales Rank (BSG2003 DVD): #37) Lot of worldwide sales too, for those that can't wait for a region specific dvd and have a chipped dvd player. Japan is also region 2 but only pre-orders are being accepted there. So there is a demand and apparently short supplies or the Sci-Fi Channel under-estimated the potential sales. Why is the U.S. release in June/July is, IMHO, very strange marketing, especially when the rest of the world viewed BSG2003 after the U.S.

Maybe they want it to coincide more with the series premiere on Sci-Fi which will be the fourth quarter of 2004 into 2005.
Just a guess.

I was hoping that the whole thing would go away or be a bad dream like Galactica 1980.

Personally I'm thrilled.

I'll be buying copies not only for myself, but also as presents to friends and relatives who weren't able to watch it.

Sounds like they're giving the DVD a great treatment too.

I think its a good thing. Showing the world that all you have to do is slap BATTLESTAR GALACTICA on a product and it will sell like mad is a good thing.

And well... I was wondering when they would release this. And we have friends here who will be quite happy. Though soon to be a little bit poorer.

Greetings all. I gotta say I'm definitley going to wait for this one. The Region 4 version is going to be exactly the same as R2 and while I would enjoy it as a birthday present (my birthday is the R4 release date, April 21st) I've still got the bitter taste of the TOS R4 screw-job. When I saw the Mini at ACMI a dew weeks back, Rymer said that the deleted scenes were pretty special as they contained some impressive improv from Olmos.

I'd be sure that the R4/2 version will be of slightly better picture quality as it is PAL formatted, but the extra, um, extras will be of greater value to me.

Cheers

I recorded the show and sent the tape to my sister in Alaska, so I'm looking forward to the DVD with all the extras and whatnot.

I would disagree with that statement and I am talking about movies and shows in general, not just BSG. If a show is just plain bad, word gets around quickly and any sales would be dismal. Would find those DVD's in the bargain or closeout section very quickly. Hollywood has a habit of hyping up bad movies/shows as "Ars Gratis Atis" and in reality give us "Ars Gratis Arcum" to try to get their investment back. To have DVD sales in the top 100 (at least at Amazon.Com), a show must have connected or hit a cord with viewers/movie goers to generate or warrant a purchasing decision.

It not unusual for different regions to have different version of a DVD. In this case, Europe was given a strip down version of the mini. You have to remember that the mini aired in England on a Premium Channel (pretty much like HBO), which gave it a limited audience. By releasing it on DVD, Sky One was looking to market the show to a wider audience and try to pick more subscribers to their service.

I have borrowed DVDs while I lived in Europe and found that some of them had more stuff on them than their American release.

I look forward to seeing the deleted scenes and listening to the commentary. DVDs are such a great innovation, providing us with so many extras. I like the fact you can replay some DVD and listen to a director, actors, etc., explain each scene/plots or elements of the movie.

Granted ncdee, but Universal (among other distribs) have a habit of creating one version for the NTSC market and one for the PAL market and very often the NTSC version gets the better deal in terms of features. The TOS R2/R4 boxset is a key example. You guys got a commentary, more deleted scenes, animated menus and more featurettes. We half the deleted scenes, less featurettes, and no game trailer all smooshed onto the seventh disc and no audio commentary. None of the review sites (or retailers) had pointed this out when it hit the market and I bought mine on the first day.... Grrrr....

Additionally, while we were the first in the world to get Back To The Future on DVD, (in a good package on its own) we still got screwed in the extra department.
I just think its crazy in this day and age of international commerce to screw your local market and encourage people to show abroad, often for less.

So at least this time, forewarned is forearmed....

This is one of those things where reluctantly I have to concede the need to own a copy for reference purposes, but which I hope someone else pays the bill for (or enables me to get on a gift card).

So, how are the advance order numbers stacking up?

Not to get the apples/oranges debate started again.
I know well that many of you hate all things mini.

But, I think it will settle one argument, specifically regarding the actual popularity of the RM version. So much time and words spent trying to justify that the viewership was "small" and such.

Also, it might gauge the level of dedication of the mini fans. Assume around 3.5 million watched, and maybe half of them hated it. Will it sell a million copies to what might be called the dedicated fans? How long will it take to sell that many if it can?

the MINI do. So I'm with you on this one Darth.

Darth,

That would actually be a rather shrewd bit of marketing research AND kick a few bucks into the coffers before the series airs.

Don't you think that assesment is a bit harsh without knowing anything about what might be on the DVD?

I have seen sets that are wastes of the DVDs because a company put them out on the cheap, didn't bother with extras- not even so much as a single promo or attempt to advertise other company products- and bargain bin DVDs that look to be little more than direct VHS transfers.

Now THAT is a true travesty.

Am I the only one who sees the humor in the fact that a DVD that has not been released yet has generated 126 reviews at Amazon?

Just goes to show there are a lot of people who are anxious to get started. Whether the DVD has all the bells and whistles extras that Sci-Fi did with their "Dune" miniseries or not isn't going to change people's opinions of the chief contents of the disc, the miniseries itself.

I imagine at this point there's probably been as many if not more comments about the pending release of the SW trilogy on DVD not offering the original cuts of the films.
