Default For Jewels, Peter and all........

.......some art folks. A very special project for my partner (Mark Dickson) and i. This is a test assembly of our Cylon Basestar project. The ship is alot farther along from when i rendered this assembly. I'd say were 80% complete. Everything you see here is modeled in Lightwave. No texture maps. This is what awaits the future of Colonial Fleets and the TOS. This model is modeled directly from the specific model pieces used to assemble the original model. A year of research went into this project before it was even attempted to be modeled. I did the model, my partner did the research, drawings and schematics. Without him it would be non-existent. Sorry for the big file size but it wouldn't do it justice without be a bigger size. This is as close as Mark would let me get. Sorry, no plan views as i hope you would understand why. And yes all those panel lines you see are modeled. Like i said no textures yet.

Please do not repost this image anywhere. It's Fleets specific. More to come later. Jewels you've seen the close-ups with Tom Desanto that evening. It's even better now.

Enjoy.

Don

I still remember the details.....and it so begs to be in a movie.
*Psst: Glen, call Tom, doggone it!*

btw: I did thank Tom D. for my birthday present too! (for newbies, X2 released on my birthday, I had a little fun with that with friends here, sometimes one has to diversify their encouragement of someone that likes your own pet subject. Helps when the guy is a dang good storyteller.)

This is one of the things Don does to promote a continuation. When he's not dragged down by the foruming muck and frustrating problems, he pushes himself to provide extremely accurate models that will be ready for a continuation. As one of the modelers of the miniseries he has the knowledge to make the models production quality.

And yes... people are noticing this.

He's doing more to make the continuation happen then all the rest of us combined.

I never thought that the sight of a Cylon Basestar would almost make me a wee bit misty.....

Just fan-fracking-tastic!

Thanks all. If you push in close to the model which by the way is alot further along now you can actually see the rivets that were part of the model pieces. In other words in the cgi world this is most definately a hi rez model. If you pushed in with the camera the model would stand up to filming like the original.

The Galactica is getting the same type of modeling treatment but is a absolute nightmare for parts. But it's getting there. Once Fleets is back up Mark and i are hoping to start our own gallery section. At one time i wanted to assemble the Galactica and give weekly updates to it's building. We'll see how that goes.

This model takes quite sometime to render. If you look at the new Galactica that's in the mini series it was well over 4 million polygons. Lightwaves threshold for rendering is around 4.3. In other words when it gets above that level lightwave will not render it.

How do you over come this particular problem then?

And please tell Mark, I'm impressed with the research he's done, your shuttle looked like the real deal.

Regards,

Peter

Loose the details. You have to be selective Peter. Being it's a hi rez model you have to first make sure you elimanate any unseen poly's. Then if you have certain areas of the ship that are not cleanly visible all the time you can be selective on just how many poly's to give that certain piece. Take for instance smooth objects. If you are continuely going to see that object close in the camera you do not want it to show jagged edges. Make sure to give it a smooth look. The same object maybe in a part of the ship that will never bee seen close up. Give that piece less polygons. Sacrifice in one spot to make others stand out. It's truly what seperates the good modelors from the great ones.

I will most certainly do so. And he'll appreciate that. Without him the Foundation Galactica would be less impressive.

Thanks Titon for the explanation, and as this place is called Colonial Fleets, maybe one day we'll see every one of the real miniatures from the show recreated here virtually in CG (boy, that's a lot of work!).

It's just a dream I have!

Regards,

Peter

Yep, but there's quite a few out there who are inspired by the show, let's hope they come over shows us what they've got.

It could be a CF show and tell, duelling CGI artists, mice at 50 paces... OK, I'll shut up now!
