How on Earth could they hope to go to series if they were beat out by Sponge Bob?

'Angels,' 'Galactica' Bow to Similar Ratings
(Wednesday, December 10 01:38 PM)
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Two big cable events -- Sci Fi's "Battlestar Galactica" and HBO's "Angels in America" -- debuted to about the same number of viewers in recent days. The results were great for the former and okay but not spectacular for the latter.
The first part of "Angels in America" -- adapted by Tony Kushner from his award-winning play and one of the most universally praised TV projects of the year -- debuted Sunday (Dec. 7) to a little less than 4.2 million viewers, according to Nielsen figures. The two nights of "Galactica," a reworking of the 1970s TV series, averaged about the same number of viewers Monday and Tuesday.
The "Angels" premiere was HBO's highest-rated original movie or miniseries this year, but it fell below the viewership for a typical episode of "Sex and the City" or "Six Feet Under." In fact, it won't even be HBO's most-watched program of the week; Saturday's (Dec. 6) heavyweight fight between Vitali Klitschko and Kirk Johnson takes that prize with about 4.3 million viewers.
Sci Fi, on the other hand, is ecstatic over the performance of "Battlestar Galactica." Its average audience is the third-best in the channel's history, trailing earlier miniseries "Taken" and "Dune." After drawing just under 3.9 million people for Monday's premiere, "Galactica" averaged 4.46 million viewers Tuesday.
Tuesday's installment was the most-watched show on cable for the night and also beat broadcast networks UPN and The WB in total viewers. It was Sci Fi's best night of the year in total viewers and all key demographics.

There must be some factor where scifi channel is not available to alot of cable viewers. Maybe its cause its not part of the basic package in some areas?

Sponge bob being up there is weird. I guess kids love it.
But the rest makes sense in that Saddam being captured is a much more compelling program to watch than just about ANY tv show.

So it looks liek the ACTUAL ratings for SciFi weren't enough to be in the TOP ten.

I think you are right. the tally must go down when you have to average it amoung all the people who watched cable during the week.

That TV news sounds very favorable for the Mini.
The weirdest thing about ratings to me is the Neilson thing, of having a box in your home. Yet have you ever known anyone who is a Neilson family? I don't. I have also heard plans of TIVO to sell their statistical data for shows watched and recorded, and selling the data much like neilson does. That would make for a larger base of data than the Neilson data, and would be more accurate.

Spongebob is a very, very popular series. I don't understand *why*, but it is. There's no shame in being outrated by it.

Here are all the Nielson overnight ratings:
Time/Program/Rating/Households
Mon 12/8:
09:01P-11:10P BATTLESTAR PT 1 3.2 2643
11:10P-01:19A BATTLESTAR PT 1 1.7 1419
01:19A-03:25A BATTLESTAR PT 1 0.9 779
Tues 12/9:
06:53P-09:02P BATTLESTAR PT 1 2.0 1643
09:02P-11:07P BATTLESTAR PT2 3.8 3159
11:07P-01:11A BATTLESTAR PT2 1.6 1316
01:11A-03:12A BATTLESTAR PT 2 0.8 663
Wed 12/10:
07:02P-09:06P BATTLESTAR PT2 1.6 1292
Sun 12/14:
07:01P-09:10P BATTLESTAR PT 1 1.2 1014
09:10P-11:13P BATTLESTAR PT2 1.6 1350
The cumulative rating for pt. 1 is 9.0 and 9.4 for pt. 2. Because cable nets cannot (generally) pull in the same ratings as a broadcast net, cable nets will often sell cumulative ratings to advertisers, ie. promising a certain number of viewers over a number of runs of a show rather than a big ratings number on one airing. I don't know what a 18.4 cume over 10 airings means to Sci-Fi but I would think that they would want a little higher cume for the money they spent to make it. (None of these numbers would be considered to be all that great on USA, TNT, TBS, Nickelodeon.) On the other hand, I think it is significant that the show had retained better than one-third of its viewership on the fifth airing of each part.
I don't have final ratings numbers but I can tell you where each show placed in the cable ratings for the week:
13. BATTELSTAR PT. 2 TUES 9:02P-11:07P
25. BATTLESTAR PT. 1 MON 9:01P-11:10P
However, Part 2 DID place #3 in Adults 18-49 (behind the Giants/Saints game on ESPN and the second hour of Monday RAW.) That is pretty significant. If it's significant enough to go to series, I couldn't say.
jonahlee:
There are VERY few Neilson families with a box. Something like 1000, I think. This is where the overnight ratings come from. Actual ratings are determined by a somewhat larger group of people (those who fill out diaries and are part of broader surveys.) I always have found it interesting that so few people get to determine what is successful and what is not!
conundrum7g:
Nickelodeon OWNS the cable ratings. Unless there is a major sporting or news event, Nick typically has 6-7 of the top ten rated programs for any given week.

Okay. I also found this:
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/tv/apt...ble%20Nielsens
Look at the rating for ep 2. 2.9.. That's far lower than 3.8. And it says for the show starting at 9 PM.
Didn't Scifi expect a 3.3 average? If the 2.9 above is the revised number for ep 2.. and it palced higher than ep 1.. it's not even come close to a 3.3 average.

The mini part 2 finished 13th in the cable ratings.
However, please note that many analysts actually remove news channels from rankings, because those are dictated by breaking news events, and not planned programming.
So, here's how many people actually see the ratings:
1 NFL Regular Season L (Giants/Saints) ESPN 4.5 6,610,000
2 WWE Entertainment (WWE Raw Zone) SPIKE 3.3 5,076,000
3 SpongeBob NICK 3.2 4,840,000
4. Battlestar Galactica, Parrt 2 SCI 3.2 4,440,000

Okay.. the numbers for the football game and Spongebob in the above are Neilsen revised. But the number for ep 2 doesn't jibe with the number from the url I posted for the Seattle paper.
Which is right?
And.. with a 3.2 and assuming that's higher than ep 1.. it's still below a 3.3 average which I think Scifi said they were expecting.

Yes.. and thank you for saying so. So, the final ratings are much lower.. almost a point for the second ep but don't know about the first.
But another question remains.. did Scifi expect a 3.3 overnight or revised? Overnight did better than that.. but revised is much lower.
Still curious.
