Supporting a Larson/DeSanto/Hatch continuation with Pay Pal
Every one keeps sayign that they can't see any one putting in $ into a continuation project if the mini fails. They also say the same thing if the mini succeeds.
Well the hell with them. Why doesn't Larson, or DeSanto, or Hatch, set up a Pay Pal acount where fans of the show could donate real $ for a continuation project? Has anyone ever thought of this. It would probably make huge headlines being financially backed by the fans.
What does everyone think?

i think it is a good idea, if the project draws enough that would be a great headline.

Captain Tux just came up with another good idea over at CA, for Larson & DeSanto to sell stock to cover the costs of production. That way it's not just a donation, but an investment! What do you all think of that?

Well, ttbomk, to do so they would have to form a seperate corporation, and go through proper procedures such as board meetings, answerability to shareholders, dispersion of profits, and suceptibility to takeover by a majority holder.
I could see about the response to the paypal idea.

This was Captain Tux's whole idea:
Quote:
.I like the principle of your idea. Though I have a regular job, I also have a part time thing that I do at home...or Starbucks depending on my mood. I tried using paypal for awhile. I personally do not like them and refuse to do business with them any longer. I am not alone on those turkeys.
That said, I have some possible enhancements to the idea. STOCK! They can offer shares of stock for the film. It is an investment with risk. The movie may not be made...it may not post a profit...but if it does make money...the fan makes money. It is a simple matter to set up shares on such a venture.
I would buy and I am sure many other fans would. We would want to make a few bucks...so guess what happens? We tell friends and relatives to see the film. We post with enthusiasm on the websites and may even get some human interest press.
Finally, a quick agreement with Bishop on writing letters.
However, if I have a chance to invest...I can make money AND MORE IMPORTANTLY...feel like I am a part of the process. You can even offer fans who have x or y number of shares an opportunity to be part of focus groups or private screenings...and for those non investors...you do like the Green Bay Packers and Marvel Comics have done...allow people to buy (at an increased price) one share of BSGMovie stock with a collectors certificate and a frame autographed by Larson...Desanto...Hatch.
With the investment angle and elimination of PayPal icky people...I like the basis of the idea JJ!
Cheers!
Tux

Although now that I think about it, why not do both? Have the stocks for the well to do people with money to invest, and the Pay Pal and maybe even a P.O. box for people who can only afford to send in 5 or 20 bucks?

Actually, the matters you state are simple enough to implement at a low cost and the stock disrtibution can be handled in a variety of ways to prevent takeover. The most simple of which is to make Larson/Desanto the principle holders with enough of a percentage on paper that a takeover would be mathematically impossible. This would be a short term investment which depending on the route you take can be done a variety of different ways.
In other words, it is doable and can be done at relatively low cost by Desanto/Larson/Hatch...etc

Hum! Interesting! I admit I'm no stocks expert- I'm just learning about that. (I printed the entire rules of incorporation for California stock corporations for light reading, lol.)

Another aspect that could help lower the up front cost of production could be to get the cast and crew, or at least some of them, to agree to a % of the profits made from the production, rather than an up front salary. Just a thought.

Great ideas! I'd be in on either of them, I do like the idea of the stock, but I'd do pay pal too if that was the only way to get our continuation.

Here's my take, also reprinted from CA:
If you want Universal to notice numbers, and feel good about it, here's something many have suggested and which I will repeat:
Phase #1 of the BSG campaign should be to make sure you buy your BSG "Saga" Region 1 DVD's as early as possible. Sales of the DVDs will be a barometer that many will measure and ntoice. If you are going to buy the DVDs, get them within the first two weeks they are out.
Of course by the time December rolls around you are sure to have something to watch in case you decide NOT to catch the miniseries. (Thank you Edward James Olmos for the idea)
Just one example of "voting with your dollars".
