Remake, Reimagine, Continuaiton: Getting the language straight
Tell me if i am wrong here
DeSinger's project is a Remake that starts 25 years into the story instead of at the beginning.
Moore's the Sci-Fi project is a Reimaginaiton which is a fresh take on the story & elements of the original materiel
Hatch's trailer is for a selective continuation of the original series

As we've seen from some... heated discussions here, I guess it's a matter of interpretation. For myself it simply comes down to upholding what's come before.
A remake is something that wipes out the existing story and starts it over from the beginning.
A continuation moves the story ahead in time. Both Hatch's and DeSanto's projects were continuations, as was Star Trek: TNG. The latter did not use the original characters, but it did take the existing universe and move it ahead.
Re-imagination on the other hand, is the tricky part. Something can be reimagined without being a remake. Think of all the shows that changed directions over the years they ran. Earth: Final Conflict comes to mind as an example of a recent SF series that ended as a completely different show than it was when it started.

I just have one question? Why can't we have a cmbation of all three ideas? It sounds like Hatch, DeSanto, and Moore all have good ideas. It also sounds like all three have flaws in their ideas.
So logically if you eleminate the bad and keep the good, and take all the ideas and put it into one story you'd have something that has something for everyone don't ya think?
Then again this is hollywood....

For Hito
Definitions I use:
Reimagination: A total re-arrangement of the concept that basically borrows some elements so that it can use the same name, and cash in on it.
Remake: A faithful re-telling, with very minor alterations. Characters are recognizable (and by character, I mean PERSONALITY and their core morality), plot is near identical, perhaps a few twists that hint at future stories.
Continuation: Any story set in the same universe which is non-destructive to the original, whether prequel, sequel or side-story. Yes, this includes Galactica 1980, however, even that story could be considered a parallel universe if we wanted it to be, which would fall under the category of 'creative alternate universe continuation,' if we wanted to accept it, but still do the continuation of the original series with Apollo and Starbuck. Or, it could have been a dream on Adama's deathbed, that was sort of prophetic, but yet confusing and illogical as dreams often are. That is the solution I prefer to accepting Galactica 1980.
As to the productions, Tom DeSanto and Richard Hatch both were doing continuations, each independently and differently, but both with the concept of a new generation born in space and the original cast right alongside of them. Very similar to Star Trek in the first few films. Some young faces mixed in with the classics, and that was done to great effect.
The "Reimagination" of Battlestar Galactica, is unfortunately of the exact worse case category, and having read the script, IMHO, it isn't true to the original. It could have been a great side-story or prequel, or even distant future continuation, if there were just a little love shown to it's progenitor, but sadly, the new production team shows contempt for it, and frankly doesn't care what the fans think.
Just my humble opinion.

Erzengel,
Yeah, Rollerball tanked. So did I Spy. Now, they are creating the New Monkees and brining back Starsky and Hutch (with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson). Hollywood is not willing to take chances. They think they can put an old label on a new product and dupe the public into watching. Most of these "remakes" or "reimagined" works fail miserably.

Actually Desanto's project seemed to me as sort of a combo Remake/Continuaiton.
Were the story picks up 25 years into the journy of galactica and the fleet.
Where the events of the original series give you a general idea about what happned in the beginings but not one that is 100% accurate.
Like they were stories being told by someone who dosent have all the information.
Giving him the freedom to go back and tell a story about the cylon ambuch and have the huge fleet that should have been there.
I'd love a combinaiton of the DeSanto & Moore project. That stays thematicaly closer to the original, but retains the better character dynamics of moores.
And of course Kelly Hu as Starbuck...

Gotta hold onto Kelly Hu. Agreed about the characterization and tone -- that's the important thing.

I agree with Hito that I'd love to see a combinaiton of the DeSanto & Moore project. However I'd like to see some of the plots from some of the comics and some of the ideas from Hatch's incorpoated as well.
Novels ideas done as flashback episodes...
Oh and if memory serves Larson had a project with the Pegasus that told the Pegasus's story. I think that story idea would be great as a flashback or (even though this been over done) a Time travel episode.

There was a novilization from the original series that i would love to see as an episode.
It was called The nightmare Machine.
Out of all the novels i had that was my favorite next to War of the Gods.

Y'know what I find interesting? I don't see the ladies here saying " " to the male casting.

Not that interesting -- rather obvious, actually.
BlueSpringBelle thought a lot of Jamie Bamber's casting -- of course, she got shouted down for her trouble, here. Are there any other ladies here who like the idea of Moore's version to begin with? Let's face it, the pro-continuation girls aren't going to gush over the male leads in Moore's version -- quite the opposite, I've no doubt.

True Dennis, Jamie Bamber is not a Richard Hatch, in my opinion. Female scifi fans are generally overlooked by TPTB. If scifi bothered to look at the demographics for a show like Farscape they would learn that there are a lot of female viewers. But we know they don't really care what the fans think anyway.

Have to disagree with both points Warrior.
Kelly Hu as Athena in a continuation? The character would have to change race!
As a new love interest for Apollo? Nah, Apollo and Sheba's relationship is the most appealing IMHO.
Regards,
Peter
P.S. Kelly Hu: Fwwoar! (imitating Kenneth Connor from the Carry On films)

I don't care if they cast her as the girl who says "launch when ready." As long as I can sit here and over her... but then again I'd rather see her as a main character IMHO.

Why not have her repalce one of the characters in the continuation?
Apollo wasnt supposed to be in DeSantos till further along into the story so she could have been Starbucks wingman.
then when apollo showed up he could take command of the G and that would still Leave some prime screen time for a female lead.

NO!! Apollo (the REAL Apollo) & the REAL SHEBA!!!! can we please get that straight!! Kelly Hu can be chased by Starbuck or be the new Athena though.
What am I saying!!! Kelly is too young to be the middle sibling between Apollo & Zack. We have to find someone useful for her to be....even though she's not listed officially yet.....She'd be a good Dalton if Laurette wasn't blond.
Let's let Maren have her quiet life wherever she is. Though I hope she comes to the celebration in Oct.
As to the male actors: Dirk & Richard as Starbuck & Apollo, aged, are more of a than the Lee character or --oops, the rest are all female!! my bad --No one else for me to get even melty over *missing market, I am a missed market with spending power; DVD collection money is sitting in the bank NOW, hint*)
And Belle: Jamie may be a hunk or a cutie or whatever today's term is, but the character in the script doesn't appeal to me, Starbuck and Apollo on the other hand *cheshire cat smile*

“re-imagined”, Remake & continuation
“re-imagined” is/was Scifi President Bonnie Hammer’s term for RDM’s BSG lite
Remake is what RDM prefers to call BSG lite
A continuation is what Richard Hatch, then Tom DeSanto had planned to do with some of the original cast members from TOS. 20 some yarens after 'The Hand of God' with a new generation born fleeing the Cylons and looking for a planet called Earth!

Exactly. Thanks for clarifying Ojai!! and I'm not lusting, just enjoying 2 fine actors in fun roles. I was teasing about the drooling part! (OK, when I was 13 Apollo broke my heart and Starbuck could melt me with a smile, happy now Dvo?) and my other half would be going to LA too, so I'm safe.
