Default jericho

These are my comments and questions about the series "Jericho," which premiered last night. I've already looked over some of the comments about the series at both the imdb and television without pity, and, par for the course, I either disagree with what those comments say, or I noticed something that no one else did.
I was glad that the pilot episode wasn't incredibly scary. Or maybe I've just gotten immune to post-apocalyptic storylines over the years and it didn't affect me as much as it might have in the past.
The other two end-of-the-world series that are on currently, Lost and the show-that-shall-remain nameless, have similar premises, but I've had problems with both of them.
What I saw in "Jericho" last night was what I had expected to see in "Lost" during its first season, but it never materialized. By that I mean that the folks on the island had the chance to start over and create a new civilization, but they aren't. Maybe it has to do with the characters--so many of them were criminals before the plane crash and they've learned never to talk with or trust anyone. Even the folks who knew each other "before" never give each other new information. And it quickly became obvious that the show's writers didn't have a clue how to get themselves out of the ruts they wrote themselves into.
As for that OTHER show, well, both I and all of the rest of you have talked about it before, so I won't go into details, other than to say that the characters on that series probably had depressing lives before the "attack" and for the past three years now have had no hope whatsoever ever since. No wonder I avoid that show like the plague.
As for "Jericho":
1. I guess I am getting old, because the only two actors on the show I recognized were Gerald McRaney and Beth Grant.
2. I kept thinking of "Alas, Babylon" and "The Stand"--two of my all-time favorite novels--and my favorite episode of "The Twilight Zone"--Time Enough at Last.
3. Like the original BG and the aforementioned novels, the characters on this new series seemed to be willing to work together, and the show ended on a hopeful note (something "Lost" has been unable to accomplish).
4. The one thing that did puzzle me--in the past 10 years or so, the only war discussion I've heard has been regarding terrorists, and as of right now, they don't seem to be capable of doing anything (yet) as large-scale as what happened on "Jericho." No one's mentioned nuclear war in a serious tone since the end of the Cold War. I wonder what made CBS decide to elaborate on this subject again?

I liked the show. Gerald McRaney was in it and that was a plus for the show.

I watched the pilot online when the network sneak-peeked it a week in advance; I thought it was pretty well done: the characters were believable and reasonably interesting, and the little girl doing the countdown to the 'boom!' actually worked, for a change. And the Sheriff getting done in by the convicts after the St. Louis cop's warning was sweet.

As to why CBS picked up the nuke thread again, its just a side effct of the sabre rattling over Iran.

Default second episode

The second episode kept me on the edge of my seat for most of the hour. And the ending was the most devastating and intriguing conclusion of an episode that I've seen in years. It blew me away. It made me feel the way I felt when I first saw the ending of The Hand of God, and that was 28 years ago!

Hi,

Skeet Ulrich (Jake Green in Jericho) was one of the killers in the first Scream movie. Also, more recently the blond chick played by Ashley Scott was The Rock's girlfriend in Walking Tall. And Shoshannah Stern (who plays Bonnie, the deaf chick in Jericho) really is in fact deaf, and stars in another prime time series in addition to Jericho.

Default favorite new show

Jericho is my favorite new show of the fall season and it has overtaken Lost in my heart for current favorite series.
I am glad the CBS has given the okay for a full season of Jericho.
Jericho seems to be avoiding some of the weaknesses of Lost. I like the fact that some mysteries are being solved and that the characters are being nice and helpful to each other (for the most part). I like the fact that there is an equal ratio of men to women in the show, and that although they are nice looking, none of the actors or actresses are knockouts. I realize that the biggy question--whodunit--may never be solved, but maybe that's the point. I also realize that the reasons that I've enjoyed Jericho are the exact same reasons there are other websites that are dissing (is that still a slang term?) the show (apparently a lot of folks don't like how there's little violence and everyone is friendly).
I nearly stopped watching Lost halfway through the episode last night, and was ready to give up on the show entirely. I talked to a co-worker this morning and she said the exact same thing. It was sooooo violent last night. I hate that the writers keep adding new mysteries but never going back to the old ones and that they keep adding new characters and killing off the old ones.
Mary
P.S. By the way, I'm dead. Jericho showed Cincinnati getting nuked two weeks ago. Julie, as far as I know, Indy still exists.

Thumbs up

Hi,

Jericho is my favorite show as well. It's the only show that I watch "live". All my other favorites are recorded on DVR. As for whodunit, the producers have promised to keep us guessing all season long. For those interested, here is another link with information on Jericho:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jericho_%28TV_series%29

I was surprised to hear that the Morse Code changes at the beginning of each episode.

Nathan

Default jericho discussion group

I'd like to start discussing Jericho on a regular basis. I've tried the Television Without Pity group, but I don't like it. At best, I've been ignored. At worst, I've been insulted because I like the fact that the show's characters are often polite to each other. And I haven't found anything on Yahoo that seems suitable.
Anyway, these are the comments I placed on TWoP the other day. I'm just copying and pasting.

These are my comments and questions about the Nov. 1 episode.
1. Am I confused about the time issue, or were the writers playing around with it again? It seems like, if Halloween were Oct. 31, the bombs had gone off earlier than three weeks ago. I hate when the writers go from holiday to holiday as if they were one week after the other.
2. To someone who was keeping track, what were the names of Emily’s father and the other assorted bad guys, and who were the actors who played them? And what, exactly, were those guys doing?
3. I didn’t like the beginning. We don’t need to watch The O.C. meets Mad Max. But I thought the episode improved later.
4. I have my own theory about the possible storyline between Stanley and Mimi.
They are my two favorite characters. I have a suggestion for what happens to them.
Taking that whole quicky wartime marriage/marriage of convenience idea, I like to think that Stanley will propose to her before they even "start" anything, just because he seems mostly nice and patient and polite. She'll accept, out of desperation. It's only after they are married for a while that they will start to have strong feelings for each other. Whether or not they have a physical relationship prior to that is up to you to decide.
Yes, I have read just as many romance novels as I have read post-apocalyptic novels.
I suspect that Mimi has a secret, based on a comment she made in an earlier episode, when she complained to Mary that men don't leave their wives. I bet that while Mimi was living in Washington she was having an affair with a married politician.
Finally, I'd like to have her become the town's representative for whatever remains of the state and federal governments. She probably knows more about the ins and outs of larger-scale politics than either Gray or Johnston do, even if she wasn't directly involved in politics herself.
5. Where were Bonnie and Mary? I hope the actresses haven’t been written out or anything.
6. I’ve been watching the first season of The Waltons on DVD. During the scene in the bar with the comment about the still, all I could think of was Miss Mamie and Miss Emily and their father’s recipe.
7. I caught the reference about Lawrence immediately.

Hi,

Well, Emily's father was played by James Remar. I didn't catch the name of his survivalist group, though. It's interesting to note that the producers of Jericho are taking notes on GINO. James Remar was in GINO as a guest star before his character was killed off. And the Morse Code changing at the beginning of each episode seems to be homage to the number of human survivors changing at the beginning of each GINO ep. Not sure where Bonnie was in this week's episode, but I noticed that Emily was barely in the previous week's episode, so I don't think Bonnie is being singled out. Some of the answers to the ongoing mystery of whodunit were satisfying in this week's episode, especially regarding the bombers that were captured in New York before detonating the nuclear device.

Nathan

Default nov 8 episode

These are my comments and questions about the Nov. 8 episode.
1. The name Randy Peyton is obviously a reference to Alas, Babylon.
2. I didn't know the US government hired mercenaries. And was the guy who was helping Eric and Jake a mercenary who helped the residents, and then his buddies shot him? I was confused about the whole scenario.
3. If Rogue River had been evacuated by FEMA, why hasn't Jericho been contacted by FEMA?

CBS Will Split 'Jericho' Season
'King of Queens' will return in December in its place
November 8, 2006

Skeet Ulrich of 'Jericho'

CBS announced on Wednesday (Nov. 8) that "Jericho" will follow in the footsteps of shows like "Lost" and "Prison Break," splitting its season into two repeat-free segments.

On Wednesday, Nov. 29, "Jericho" will have what is being described as a "fall season finale," which will conclude with a cliffhanger of some sort. CBS won't repeat the freshman drama and will instead bring the show back in February with all new episodes running for the remainder of the season.

The network says that the "Jericho" return will be preceded by a recap episode on Feb. 14. The all-new episode on Feb. 21 will flash back to the day before the mysterious nuclear attack that launched the show.

CBS doesn't play to entirely abandon "Jericho" during its 10-week absence. The network revealed that episodes will continue to stream on its Innertube platform, where it has been CBS' most streamed show. The show's website will also integrate new original content

In the place of "Jericho," which has averaged a solid 11.08 million viewers this season, CBS will bring back the comedy "The King of Queens" on Dec. 6 with back-to-back new episodes. Two more new "King" episode will air the following Wednesday as well, with single episodes airing at 8 p.m. ET on Dec. 20 and Dec. 27. The network says that another seven new "King of Queens" episodes will air at some point in 2007, but failed to clarify, saying only that additional programming announcements will come at a later time.

Default split season

I hate this split season nonsense. It means I go out for the evening, or watch an old movie on DVD or cable, or frankly, go to bed early!
Last spring, some of the series I watched didn't end until June! By that time I can think of better things to do than be inside watching TV. Even if I tape the show to watch later, I feel like I still should be outside or doing something summery.
Mary
P.S. When Lost comes back in February, I don't think I'll be watching it. Last night I was bored during Lost, and so repelled by the violence. I just kept thinking of Jericho while I was watching Lost. Lost has to be one of the biggest TV disappointments ever made.

Default regarding the no repeats

I think it would have been fun if CBS had run Jericho from the beginning on Saturday nights. Yes, I'm well aware that Saturday night is the least-watched night. Yes, I realize that people who are home watching TV on Saturdays are supposedly losers (yes, I probably fall into that category). It doesn't seem to occur to network programmers that the reason few people watch network TV that night is because there is seldom anything on!

Default nov 15 episode

These are my comments and questions about the Nov. 15 episode.
1. The characters of April and the mayor's wife remind me of the Marcia Cross (Linda) and Merrilyn Gann (Rose) characters on Everwood. They look alike, the characters have similar mannerisms and even what they "do" is similar.
2. I got confused as to where Eric and Jonah came from. They came up on Ravenwood from behind, but how did they get there? Did Eric take a boat across the river and then walk to wherever Jonah was?
3. I am guessing that Eric does not yet know that April is pregnant.
4. When the flashback started, I thought, oh, no, not this nonsense again. But the flashback was different from what is shown in Lost. The sequences took a completely different direction from what you expected.
5. Okay, so Jake has two women interested in him--Heather and Emily, who must have been friends before he returned to town. And Eric has two women interested in him--April and Mary. Am I to assume that Johnston has a lady friend stashed somewhere that his wife doesn't know about?
6. I do enjoy this show. Some of the other discussion groups have complained about how the characters are willing to work with one another and are, for the most part, civil, but that's something I like to see.

Default emily and jonah

Unless I've completely misunderstood the show and what I've read, Emily Sullivan is Jonah Prowse's daughter. Was she married at one time? Or where her parents never married and so she has her mother's last name? That plot hasn't been explained yet, to my knowledge.

Hi,

I'm actually enjoying the Jake-Emily-Heather love triangle. But hey, I'm 36 this year, and still enjoy the Archie-Betty-Veronica love triangle in Archie Comic Digests!

I think that Jonah and his survivalists are encamped across the river. That was why Eric brushed past Jake and drove across the bridge in the pickup truck to do "whatever it takes". Should be interesting to find out what kind of deal he made with Jonah. Although I don't watch Lost, I did enjoy the flashbacks in this episode of Jericho. Mostly because it showed Jericho and it's citizens in a happier time before the bombs were detonated.

Regards,

Nathan

I feel lost watching Lost. I don't care for The Others or the Sawyer, Kate, and Jack love triangle. Jack at one point saw them together and was considering killing Sawyer. Eko died fighting the monster because the actor who plays him wanted out of the series due to personal reasons.

Stanley and Mimi remind me of Apollo and Sheba, and that may be why they are my favorite characters on the show. Like Sheba, Mimi was in a situation where she was left completely, totally alone, with everyone she ever knew probably dead. But, like Apollo, Stanley was so preoccupied with his own problems, and hiding the fact that he was in mourning as well, that it took him a while to notice Mimi.
My only concern is that Alicia Coppola, who plays Mimi, is still listed as a guest star. I hope that doesn't mean that she will get killed off eventually. On the other hand, Merrilyn Gann, who played Rose on Everwood, was listed as a guest star for two years before she was shown in the opening credits, and she was in almost every episode!
