Muffit Krull glaves Lemony Snickett...

Hi all! Well, we ventured out the other night on the icy roads to go see the ever dynamic (to put it lightly) Jim Carrey in Lemoney Snickett (or whatever it's called - my family keeps calling it Lilo and Stitchett, Jiminy Snicker, and anything else that comes to mind as the name is ever so un-rememberable). The verdict? Pretty good, really pretty good. Mr. Carrey shows that he can play an unlikeable Cable Guy type part and make you like him anyway - hey, how can you resist that mischievous smile???

Anywho, last night I discovered a new DVD of the 1983 fantasy Krull, which I had ordered months ago and it got lost in all the packing and moving. So I gathered up the fam' and they actually watched...

To my GREAT surpise, they loved Krull /hands down/ over Lickety-whatever-it's called! I was so shocked! And that without the benefit of actors anybody's even heard of!! (Well, except a young and barely noticeable Liam Neeson with a bit part as a far cry from his fame today).

It just shows to go ya, good story-telling stands the test of time. And time???

Ynyr: "I can't... stop the sand..."
Lyssa: "You can't stop Time..."

P.S. The cast includes kind of obscure but very talented and memorable folks such as Freddie Jones (Never Ending Story III, Time after Time, Erik the Viking, and VERY memorably, as Thufir Hawat in the awesome Dune movie), Lysette Anthony, a Twilight Zone/Dark Shadows actress who is simply stunning in this film, and David Battley, whom you might remember as Mr. Turkentine in WIlly Wonka and the CHocolate Factory.

HERE'S SOME PICS FROM THE FLICK: PICTURES FROM THE WONDERFUL KRULL MOVIE

I am curious about "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" simply because it makes me think of the Harry Potter stories...which I think is the motif that the writer of the Lemony Snicket stories was trying to cash in on....the whole "dark theme geared towards kids" motif.

When I first saw Krull as a wee lad...I thought it was another Star Wars ripoff. When I got older, I realized the Arthurian influence behind it..and appreciated the film more. But as a kid...I could not get into it, which thoroughly surprised my mom because she thought I ate up just about ANYTHING that was science fiction/fantasy.

Respectfully,
Martok2112

Hi Martok! Lemoney Snicket is actually great fun and well worth the cubits. Of course ANYTHING with Jim Carrey in it fits that description . He's the Jerry Lewis of the 21st century.

The baby is hilarious, and I look forawrd to more in the series (my daughter says, SOUE is actually 3 of the LS series combined, interesting). And you are very perceptive, concepts like Harry Potter and Lemoney Snicket are definitely cashing in on the once taboo dark story concept. Kinda like many anime films are a kind of "cartoon-noir"

Thanks, Muffit.

I think that some writers are appreciating the maturity that some youngsters actually have these days, and they appreciate the intelligence with which some young viewers/readers apply to and relate with these stories...so that is why the stories for kids (as fanciful as they might be) are getting somewhat darker. As I understand it, there are some things in SOUE the movie that were added to make the tone even that much darker, even than the novels...whereas in the Harry Potter novels, and movies, we are dealing with kids who are growing from pre-pubescence into maturity, and the stories become progressively darker and more mature, whilst still maintaining the whimsy that is the trademark of a good HP story.

Affectionately,
Martok2112 <--------------- (A Seriously Unfortunate Event )
