Ivan The Terrible
At 7pm on Sept 15th, Ivan hit Pensacola with a vengence as a Catagory Four Hurricane. At 10pm we lost power. Winds were 135 MPH that night. Lindsay (my 27 yr.old daughter) and I stayed in her room because it has only one window. The next morning I went out at 6 am and surveyed the damage. I was expecting the worst. My little house held together and did not even lose a shingle. My house saved our lives and she is my hero. We did lose two big trees, one of which landed on my sunroom, which held up and only has a dent in it. My side driveway was torn apart by the big tree on that side which fell over and hit my neighbors house....... Many of the houses in my neighborhood were severely damaged and a tornado went through two blocks over, but only the house next door to me was damaged on our street. I don't know what happened, but the hurricane Gods were smiling on us that night.
The days following were very hot in the nineties and we have only slept about 8 hours total since last Tuesday. As I sit here typing this the shock has finally set in and this is the first time I have cried. Last Friday, our neighbors left for Texas until the power returns and they gave me their generator so we could keep our fridge going. Two days ago it started cooling off and went into the 60s at night. Today at 4:30 pm we got power and water back. We were without power and water for only 7 days. If not for the combined efforts of everyone from across the nation and Canada...it would definitely been months.
We got free ice, food and water everyday and people from all over the country and Canada have come to help us. They airlifted food and water in by C-130s and helicopters. We are so grateful because many people have lost everything. Pensacola has been declared a catastrophe. President Bush and his brother Jeb, who is the govenor of Florida, came and walked the neighborhoods and the beach to assess the damage. We have every army reserve unit from three surrounding states here to direct traffic and catch looters. They have been our saviors, along with the police that came all over and the firemen and electric companies...as a matter of fact, an electric crew from Missouri turned our power on today..... All I can say is that I am so thankful that my home stood fast...it could have so easily gone the other way. We have been totally cut off from the rest of the world. We had an old portable radio that my Dad bought back in 1960 to take camping. We listened to that thing 24 hours non stop. The Radio stations were the only lifeline we had. They stayed on for 24 hours a day on generators, talking everybody through the storm and helping us after with info about where to get gas and water. My work is closed for the rest of the week then they will assess when to reopen. Here are two websites I was sent by gaelengaelen...I had not seen any pictures until these.

You had neighbors who went to Texas after Ivan hit, and now Ivan is heading back toward Texas.
Do you think it's just a coincidence?

That is so true, ace and we will........
Well, Paul...we are at it again....Looks like Jeanne may be heading for you....Hopefully she will take the first route and just head back to sea...but now the are saying that she could hit around Daytona OR shoot across to the Gulf OR shoot up to the Carolinas. I guess they are giving the worst possible senarios.... I am glued to the weather channel once again... Also I wouldn't be surprised if Karl made a loop and joined the party......

Oh man... I am so sorry. They are lining up one after another!
In a small way I can sympathize. The Northridge Earthquake literally tossed me across the room. But it wasn't the earthquake itself that got to me. It was the never ending damn aftershocks!!! Dealing with mother nature is hard. But its its horrible when it won't stop kicking you when your down.

I know. Mother nature never has had a sense of humor. She needs the broomstick put somewhere else.

Emerita,
Glad to hear that you are safe and that you still have your house.
Praying for you and Paul with all that weather that seems to have FL in its crosshairs.
