Its really hard to pick from!

I liked them all. Except the destruction of Terra's missiles. The laser shield was too fantastical and not in keeping with the fictional world of Galactica. It was duex ex machina-ish.(sp?) They shoulda had the Galactica decend to a low Terra orbit, then have its anti-raider laser turrets fire like crazy.

By placing the Galactica physically between the two incoming waves of missiles would have been very dramatic. Much more than the "magical missile shield". And realistically, since ICBMs aren't known to dodge laser fire, the laser turrests COULD HAVE done it.

But theb I think they were in a hurry... and that was all they had time to do.

---

The other effects you mentioned looked really good too. I also would add the Nova minefield scene. Some say it looks dated. But it was a very exceiting scene and I think it looked good too.

I never thought that the missle shield was the best idea, as it left me wondering why they hadn't used it to protect the fleet more ?

I understand that they could have said that the shield wouldn't stop laser fire, but if it only stopped physical things, it could have stopped the raiders on the kamikaze run ?

I think that the Galactica and Pegasus battle would have been my first choice ?

If the 'all will become clear' comment is going where I think it is going, then you need to show the Galactica being victorious at something. All of your suggestions are of bad things happening to the Galactica or general shots.....

I think you need a shot of the Galactica achieving a victory of some sort....

Ahh.... second after I wrote my reply, the poll appeared !!! With the Pegasus shot...

But there is still no candidate for the Galactica achieving a victory, which for the thing I think Peter is working towards is what you need.......

IMHO !

Ernie, it's got nothing to do with what you may be speculating. I'll see where the poll goes and then tell people what they can do next if the want to.

Best,

Peter

Seeing and feeling the Atlantia explode as a kid in a theatre in "Sensoround" was incredible. I thought the theatre was going to collapse around me. Definitely my favorite scene.

I never liked the concept of the planet shield. I thought the special effect was not good when you take the rest of the series in account as mentioned in earlier post.

My favorite episode is the Living Legend one with the Pegasus. I thought the one weak part of it was when you see the missiles launch off the Pegasus looking like some kind of Apollo moon shot but then cut to a scene where the shots appear as laser bolts. Missiles would have been fine but we needed one or the other not something that was somehow both.

The simple viper launch sequence was a great special effect even though we saw it almost every week. I liked it every time and still do.

The mountain exploding at the end of GOIPZ is still my favorite & I would recommend that effect be included in the list.

I was hoping you guys were going to do a render for cylon or CFF. And that's why you were asking.

None of the above. There's alot of FX that was left on the cutting room floor including one that i have show's Zac's fighter being destroyed. The camera is inside the Galactica's landing bay looking out at the attack and it show's Zac's fighter on final approach. He's nearly to the entrance when the cylon fighters hit him with a fierce volley. His fighter explodes right outside the bay.

The scene actually was set to have Zac's fighter stay intact but roll onto the Galactica's landing bay floor and explode there but they thought it to violent for that day's young folks.

That scene's actually on the cut scenes of the DVD set.

Yeah and seeing Rick Sprinfield explode in his cockpit isn't violent!

Peter

Peter -

I thought the cut scene that was included in the DVD set showed Zac's Viper destroyed just outside the landing bay (POV from inside the bay)...

I remember the way that Zac dies in "Saga" and even though it isn't gory, I thought the way his body goes up in flames before the Viper explodes was kind of graphic - for a "G" rated television show anyway. I don't mind it - I think the effect is kind of cool, but I'm glad that they didn't use it more than just the one time.

Best,
Bryan

As I remember one revier touted Zak's death as a touch of reality. The young inexperianced pilot get whacked while the old pro survives. A noval concept for Hollywood at the time.

Almost all of them were impressive for the time when you consider that much of what they did had never been done before. I voted for the shuttle (and viper) crash on GOIPZ because it is really tough even today to get snow right in miniature shooting, and I have yet to see it done really well digitally either. While a number of the other shots have a dated look, this one stands as well today as it did 25 years ago.

As for the laser shield…this is actually a wonderful concept for an impromptu anti-missile defense shield. By “feeding” the upper atmosphere with the Galactica’s big anti-ship laser (spinal mounts?), the Galactica is able to initiate laser gain, generating a non-directional laser field in the upper atmosphere. A similar naturally occurring laser condition exists in the upper atmosphere of Mars.

They did not film the proposed shot which would have been great.

Actually i think the best FX scene ever for the TOS will be the next filmed one in a continuation movie.

That'd be the cosmic zoom shot from deep space to the rag tag fleet as the camera makes its way past the familiar Rising Star, Celestra, Prison Barge and Colonial Movers and the shuttles darting to and fro, the workers outside the ships patching them up – to the head of the convoy and the Galactica where the Vipers fire out of the launch tubes on routine patrol as the camera enters the launch bay and moves along the corridors of the Big G as we make our way to the bridge and bridge crew flash past the camera as a man stands with his back to us his hands resting on the bridge railing looking out at the viewport, he turns to the camera and...

The one effect shots that I think is really missed in the first hour was a flyby of Adama and Apollo descending through a devastated Caprica.

I think they really should have included that. Would have been powerful. But I guess they didn't have the time to make a whole world for one shot.

My vote went to Cimtar, most of the shots used in other episodes were originally shot of the pilot.

That FX shot of the fighter exploding from inside the landing bay isn't on the DVD, gang....only the angle from outside. That sounds like a darn cool shot.

And them rolling Zac's fighter into the landing bay....pretty intense for about 8:15 on a Sunday night in 1978. I can see why the completed shot had him exploding just outside the bay.

If the first fx shot in a continuation movie was a choice, that would have been mine too.

Actually Jewels you're wrong, in the cut sequences you see out into space from the landing bay and see Zac's Viper explode. I believe that's what Titon was describing in the FIRST part of his post.

For those who don't have the dvds, and especially those who are going to buy them, the extra footage of ZAC being killed is a full scene. It features finished footage, some we've seen before, edited all together. The film looks like it needs some digital cleaning, and there is no audio, but I for one got a bit of a thrill and a chill from watching it.

Default All becomes clear...

British SF media magazine SFX is looking for the greatest special effects moments in film and TV to be included in a run-down in a future issue.

It'd be nice if the original Battlestar Galactica was included in that run-down. To this end a number of polls have been initiated online to find out the best SFX sequence in the show. From these polls it has emerged that it is a tie between the attack on the Colonial Fleet leading to the destruction of the Atlantia, and the attack on Caprica City by Cylon Raiders as witnessed by Serina (Jane Seymour) – both sequences appearing in the episode Saga of a Star World (the poll was conducted at CA too).

For BSG to get a mention, do the following – email SFX at: sfx@futurenet.co.uk, marking your email "Greatest Special Effects Sequences" in the subject line and choose your sequence from BSG, and maybe write a few words as to why you chose it.

Don't delay, vote now!

One of my favorite FX shots was from Lost Planet of the Gods, when the Cylons attack Eden and start firing on the pyramids!!!!

That was one cool shot!!!!
