The Tyrol Character.
Since this is the only character that we can agree to liking in the Moore version, I am wondering if he wasn't borrowed from the DeSanto version? Tom's script had a ton of new warriors who were to be mentored by a familiar face, that of STARBUCK. I can see tyrol as a next generation warrior leading the charge against the Cylons.

Kingfish ......I don't think so ..............If you'll look at some threads this
character was based on a different movie altogether ..........although
I can't remember the name of the movie I know it is listed somewhere on
the boards of this site.

Tyrol was one of the better characters. Could even fit into a continuation-scenario.

Moore has a lot of Star Trek experience so here is an easy shallow explanation:
Tyrol is similar to the character of Chief O'Brien from Star Trek down to the Asian girlfriend! O'Brien is Irish. Tyrol is played by a Scottish Canadian.
If you get beyond the superficial I see Tyrol as the means to introduce the TOS Starbuck/Athena/Cassie love triangle storyline possibly through a Tyrol/Boomer/Callie love triangle. We will have to see when the show goes to series.
Tyrol is a cross between Star Trek O'Brien and TOS Starbuck!

Well, I see your point in the O'Brien analogy.
One of the best scenes, the "40 seconds" bit, I was actually siding with the XO. Even the drunk XO knew better than the enlisted engineer how to save the ship, and save more lives than the ones he was close to.
So, I liked the flawed Col. Tigh. Let's hear the groans now.

Oh, come on, do I need to write a treatise comparing the drinking habits of the original Starbuck, and Col. Paul Tigh to get a reaction?

Darth it’s interesting that you should say that because in the draft script they have a scene were Starbuck goes to the Ex. O. and tells him he was right to do what he did and the Chief was full of #$&@.

Have you guys noticed its only characters from the original show which have attitude problems? All the new characters are much nicer people.

From what I recall, the only time Starbuck had a hangover was War Of The Gods. On part that was left out of the episode is that there are a number of female fighter pilots in various stages of undress with Blue Squadron when the alert is called.
Starbuck: I don't remember making it back here.

That was the beaten to death In Harm's Way thread. Tempers flared and Fleets was almost history. Thank the Lords Of Kobol that it was brought back once again from the brink. Maybe we should rename the site Phoenix Rising since like the great bird we keep on ticking even after taking a licking.

Thomas ...... You KNOW what I think about the Original ..........and EVERYONE
definately knows how I feel about the 'mini'. I think I understand what you
are trying to say. I think political correctness can be a HUGE drawback.
While I have pointed out Starbuck's .........habits as well as "STARDOE'S"..
I think I definately defended Starbuck OVER Stardoe as Stardoe's character
was badly written as was the other character's in the mini.
I think the "MINI" fans like 'their' characters better because not all of them
understand the differences between TOS and MINI ............it's up to US
to keep telling them so they understand that there is a HUGE difference
between the original and the 'REimagined' feldergarb that RDM has tried
to PUSH on us. ...........

For those of us that like the mini, it is not so much a matter of "preferrence" to the old show, though I might make that argument on many levels. But at the least for us fans of the new show, it is the BSG we have.
For those that wanted something else, I am sure it is heartbreaking.
For us on the other side, we have a new show to get a bit excited about.

OK, Darth, there's a phrase that really raises my hackles.
If you liked the mini for what it was, great. If you liked it for the writing, the performances, the characters, whatever, that's fine (but I'll start questioning your taste later ).
But liking it "because it's the BSG we have" really sets me off.
Frankly, it's an insult to both TOS and yourself (if you actually feel that way). It's saying TOS isn't worth remembering because anything can replace it. It's admitting that you are so weak-willed that you are willing to settle for anything that has the BSG label slapped on it, whether or not it's actually BSG.
I could go remake The Brady Bunch, call it Battlestar Galactica, and satisfy that criteria.
If you like the mini, like the mini for what it is. Stand up and say why. Point out the similarities and differences you see in it from TOS.
But don't insult my intellegence - and most especially yours - by saying "gee, it's the only Galactica we've got, so I'll like it." You're better than that.

Hang on, let me peddle backwards a bit...
No, looking at what I said, I was talking about those of us that did like the mini (for whatever reason, and they probably aren't all the same).
If you that don't like it and want to disown it (like G80) that is up to you.
But for fans of "the abomination" it is for us the BSG that we have. We like it and want more. I see no reason to be apologetic about that.
I am not asking you to hop on the bandwagon. It has already left the station anyway.
We have covered the question of if it deserves to be called "BSG" before, no need to rehash it. I have a different take on it than you do.
In my statement, I am preaching to a different choir than you sing in. Don't twist my words man. I never said "gee, it's the only Galactica we've got, so I'll like it."
Does it feel good to vent a little?

It does feel good to vent, yes. And I agree liking something is a very subjective thing. And I'm not asking you to apologize for liking anything, least of all a TV show.
What I object to, Darth, is the attitude that the phrase "it's the BSG we've got" suggests. It suggests giving up. It suggests complacency. It suggests it's OK to ashcan the hard work that came before, and settle for less than we deserve.
Do you see the distinction? It goes beyond our difference of opinion over the mini.
You think the mini was well done. That is your opinion, and you are welcome to it. Nor am I accusing you in particular of "settling" for less. But the attitude of "It's all we've got" is defeatist - and I will not subscribe to it, applied to BSG or anything else.
One of my many little quirks, I guess.

I just think you overlooked that I was separating those with differing opinions in my post originally.
The "BSG we've got" I mean as a claim of "ownership" for those of us that like it, and look forward to more.
I thoroughly understand that many of you have a different view, and lay no claim to it being BSG at all.

OK. So I should replace the "it's the BSG we've got" with "Our BSG". Your original statement does make sense that way, and makes it clearer in my mind what you meant.
So it's OK for me to say that the mini was not MY "BSG", I cannot call it "BSG", and you would understand that in the same way?
OK.

Ya, mon. We have had THAT conversation before.

Well that comment kinda gets MY hackles up.
We didn't settle for less. We got a superior product. One with superior acting and better written characters with more depth. We've got a more believable storyline. We also saw FAR superior effects with a better grasp of real physics. (warp speed not included)
I thought the Desanto script was lame. I hated it. Moore did an outstanding job. We now have a REAL BG playground to enjoy with a big bowl of popcorn and a tasty IPA to chase it down with.
So there.

Well, I did like a lot of the changes in the RM version, as stated elsewhere.
Dawg can have his BSG, I'll have mine, everyone else is on their own!
Rain, man, you are supposed to be venting at ME, not Dawg! Get with the program.

Oh yeah, sorry dude.
By the Lords of Kobal how could say such blasphemous things about our beloved Galactica! How dare you even compare that abortion from RDM to the REAL Galactica. You should be hung by your mivoks! (wait, wrong show)
