Reasons why I like "BG"

Hi. New guy here. Here are some reasons Why I Think "BG" Is good TV.

The Colonial Fleet never looks back. Always goes forward.

Lots and lots of women pilots!

There's a cute kid, but he doesn't save the ship every week!

The guy from Bonanza is in this show!

Baltar - he gets to command the bad guys, while never leaving his post!

Two words - Dr. Ravashol!

Yeah those are good reasons but I like it because it is classic sci-fi with an original story and good action.

oh and welcome to colonial fleets this is a great board you'll like it we discuss alot of BSG and other stuff too.

I agree with all of those reasons! For me those female pilots were a role
model .......as my brother told me GIRLS couldn't go INTO the military .......
I did and I served my time HONORABLY (Unlike my brother who got out
of the military early because the officers didn't like his CHAVUANISTIC
attitude )

I posted something similar before the recent demise and rebirth of Fleets, but one of my main reasons for watching in the first place was I thought Galactica looked like a spacefaring warship SHOULD look. The Viper, looks like a space figthter. As one of the guys over on the Starshipmodelor website said, this is how the X-Wing should have looked, but I digress.

The Cylons looked suffieciently alien, with a different design philosoply in both capital ships and fighters.

As a Starship Combat Fan, these things lured me in.

What hooked me and kept me around first was the mythical nature of the show. Kobol WAS acient Egypt, with its subsequent exodus, Adama (a play on Adam) has children with names from Greek Mytholoy and the Bible. So many similarities, with the 12 tribes of Man/12 tribes of Israel and the lost 13th tribe of both.

The subsequent overarching storyline of Destruction, devastation and loss but not defeat, of keeping hope alive in the face of nearly impossible odds, gave the show a angle on the human spirit that I don't think Science Fiction had explored before. That drew me deeper.

The strong characters and great actors sealed the deal. Adama, warrior/politician/quasi-religious figure, with the knowledge of Earth, leading a people who'd lost all but keeping them AND hope alive. Apollo, having suffered loss and soldiering on, never succumbing to despair. Starbuck, as close as a non-blood relative can be to a brother to Apollo, somewhat mischevious and a rouge, but still treated like a part of his family. Athena, Tigh, Cassiopea, Boomer, even bad guys like Sire Uri, or the evil of Baltar had dimension of depth and reality about them. What has driven human history on this planet more than the lust for power? And not just power, but power over our fellow humans? How more real could the betrayal of the human race have been, drawing this from our own history?

Another thing I liked was when Boxey managed to stow away on the missions.
I never figured out how he was able to get away with that.

Not to turn negative (which should be a clear sign that I'm about to) but one of my biggest disappointments with BG03 was the loss of the shows mythic qualities. "Hi I'm Bob. uhhhh Bob Adama, yeah that's it."

But the unforgivable for me was what they did to the Galactica herself. In the classic series, the Colonial Battlestars are so powerful, only 12 have ever existed. The very existence of one is not only the hope of the human race, but THE major concern of the Cylon Empire.

In the retread, we hear at one point that 30 battlestars have been destroyed, and someone mumbles 'that's nearly a quarter of the fleet.' Galactica herself is so old she's been decomissioned and turned into a museum. So the fate of the human race now depends not on a MAJOR warship, but now with a vessel of suspect military value.

You can turn Adama from a visionary into a liar, do things that are totally illogical to the story, turn Colonial civilization into a very Hollywood-like pursuit of the more base human instincts, even destroy the mythic quality of the series. But screwing around with the Galactica is where I draw the line!

Hello Gunstar, ACK! how did I miss that?! or :light: maybe they were trying to say something about how she may be old but she still has it in her, she still has value, after all she's the only one that survived out of all the 120 existing battle ships right? it was the "original" (albeit the reimagined original) battle star Gallactica that did it "our old girl"...just a thought
