Sci Fi Channel's Midas Touch.
Sci Fi Channel's Midas Touch.
1. Let’s create a remake of a show and offend much of the existing fan base
2. Let's take a revered character from that show, Starbuck, and make her the most obnoxious character ever written in entertainment history
3. Let's add some horror to the show by killing a baby, the cheapest shot ever written in entertainment history
4. Let’s create a pilot without money for a series and then wonder why we can’t find any financial backers
5. Let's add it to the list of Tremors, Farscape, and other shows we have destroyed.

So the mini-Starbuck is more obnoxious than Hector or Vector?

Whoa,that is a bold statement.
I would much rather see an athletic blonde babe than have to see an extraterrestrial version of the teletubbies.
I see our calibration points for obnoxiousness are set to very different thresholds.

I don't know about that, but our calibration points for what constitutes a babe certainly are.

I don't see everyone's problem with Hector and Vector. They were pure innocence and did not have some of man more distasteful qualities such as anger or envy. I'm not claiming that they were Galactica's finest moment, but come on. They were only in that episode 20 mins tops!
As for Kara Thrace (sigh what a stupid name) the name ALONE is worse . Not to mention what they did to her character, and BABE? How is she a babe? What part of her is attractive. Manly, yes I'll give her that. But she is not a babe, unless you have VERY low standards.

The makeup for Hector and Vector as with the whole concept was, I believe, an attempt to herald back Ray Bolger's successful and endearing days as the Scarecrow - even the nose paint was identical. And of course, he would have to dance in that funny scarecrow way, so that would need to be written in somehow. It may indeed seem out of place, but Larson's original BSG was always targeting the family unit, not just any one age group or gender. To a 20 something or 30 something average Sci Fi male they do indeed figure as silly. But Mr. Larson did manage to woo other age groups and genders with such silliness.
My favorite casting in this manner was Fred Astaire. No, not someone you would identify with Sci Fi really, but his role scored huge browny points with folks like me and my parents.
My silly 2 cubits...

I grant 1, 4, and 5.
I had no problem with Starbuck (well, not much), and the baby scene (while cheap) was no where near the cheapest.
Maybe I've just seen more awful movies than you.

I would be the last one could justifyably call old fashioned, prude, touchy, squemish, ect., but IMO there are certain places you don't go to in entertainment media. Killing babies for shock value is one of those places. In a film like Shindler's List, although I don't remember a specific scene of a baby being visibly killed, such a thing would be understandable and appropriate. But not in any other type of film or TV show. That scene, even though I knew it was coming from having read that part of the script last year, revolted and angered me.
The original BSG was a family oriented, kid friendly show. This time around, if the handjob in the first 2 minutes of the mini didn't do it, that baby killing scene would surely have prompted many a parent to change the channel for the sake of their viewing children.
