Default Got it Figured out

Well my friends I have done it, figured out the WHY.

Yes why, are they reimagining BSG?

The move is brilliant in its concept and lays the foundation for more minis and series if they desire. No don’t get me wrong, I am not happy about this but it all fits together in a nice neat package that will provide raw material for many new projects.

To start, we’ve all pointed out the human created robots turning against humanity is not new. In fact it is quite common, the Terminator trilogy, Dune uses it in its foundation, Star Trek TOS touched on it, even Dr. Who played with the concept. So why use it for BSG?

Well to start with Dune is owned Universal and is part of the Sci-Fi channels library. In its foundation is the story of humanities rise, fall and rise again as told by Frank Herbert.

Mans fall is brought about by the machines he has created (man vs machine) and is enslaved by his creation. In time man revolts, a new war is fought where man becomes victorious and regains supremacy in the Universe.

Sound familiar? The new BSG is set in the time of mans defeat by the machines, the Galactica represents the seed that will eventually grow and defeat the machines. This makes BSG a prequel in the Dune universe.

The BSG universe and Dune Universe are now one.

Some further thoughts on this, in no particular order:

By David Eick’s own admission this has been in the planning stages for at least a year, probably longer. Moore was brought in to write a script, nothing more, he’s a jobber, a hired gun. Since he finished the script he has moved on to two other projects, Eick seems to the one really running things.

The rights issues would be held at the Bonnie Hammer level and above, people like Eick and Moore would not need to know about it. Just do as instructed. Eick was told to find a writer who would do a treatment of BSG that would meet certain criteria, he found Moore. I was always a bit curious why Vivendi management would be involved in Moore’s pitch, it is clear now they wanted to make sure he was headed in the right direction, and did not know of the issues his efforts would solve.

We heard rumors of a ‘Continuation being discussed’ well the sources were reliable and there is a continuation, just not what we thought it was.

There was a rumor that surfaced last year, and disappeared a little too quickly, inspiration for RDM’s new script would be taken from Dune.

With BSG set in the Dune Universe, or sharing it, writers can be brought in to develop stories that fill in the gap between BSG and Dune. Paramount has its Star Trek Universe and now SciFi (Universal) has one, BSG/Dune.

The beauty of all this is BSG can stand on its own and/or act as a Prequel.

I wonder if this would be allowed if I tried to post it on Scifi?

One problem with this theory as I see it. Dune is not owned by Universal, it's owned by the Herbert Estate. Uni has the film rights to the original books but they don't own the property. I don't think they'd want to tie their actually intellectual property to something they've only liscensed, particularly given the so-so performance of Children of Dune.
