My letter.
********************************************************
Dear Ms. Hammer,
First of all, let me compliment you and the Sci Fi Network. Lately, I
have been hugely disappointed by the quality of programming being
offered on many networks- I do not like reality television, myself. I am
one of those who, old-fashioned as it may be, looks to the entertainment
media to provide a source of inspiration, in the form of characters
facing challenges, and overcoming them through their strength of
character and values.
I was, therefore, completely enthralled by your recent production,
"Taken". The message it delivered was unquestionable- the power of
goodness to overcome any obstacle, and the limitless capacity for
strength available when all people stand together. For this I applaud
all those involved in this outstanding work.
In light of this, I implore you to consider another view I have, which I
share with many others.
I have also been a fan of another older show, Battlestar Galactica, for
a long time now. I also admired the same qualities in this show- the
strength of people to overcome any obstacle, and to face terrible
challenges without losing sight of their central principles.
I have been following the various efforts toward bringing back this
series, and I applaud those involved for their efforts. I do, however,
think there is a central point which, if addressed by all parties, will
overcome the elusive difficulty which has plagued any attempts to revive
this series.
The problem is a reflection of the media, and I believe society as a
whole. People are constantly challenged in their beliefs and values, and
it becomes harder and harder to operate in a manner based on simple
ethical principle. Now, more than ever, we need this. We need heroes. We
need charachters who ae driven not by their demons, but by their innate
strengths. We need to be able to sit down with our children and watch
something together, which we can talk about later, to explain that yes,
Jimmy, this is how people should act toward each other.
People want hope. We want reassurance that the moral darkness which
often seems so imminent is not as threatening as we fear. We need-
heroes.
In closing, I hope that before any more decisions are made regarding
this production, you will take the time and listen- to the fans, who are
desperately trying to be heard; to the general public, who flock to an
excellent work such as 'Taken'; but mostly to your own heart, where I am
sure resides the hero who can start a trend in the entertainment
industry to turn around the general neglect and decay, and be the
strong, nurturing figure who is remembered for making the Sci Fi channel
the excellent media it can be.
Thank you for your attention, and bless you.
Michelle
