Since the U.K. just got Nemesis this week i though i'll give you all my review of the film sci-fi fans say isn't up to par with the rest of the Trek films.
The Pro's - Bigger scale than the last film!
- More action than the last film!
- Alot more eye candy than a usual Trek film!
- Loud movie (as with alot of action movies in 2002?)
- Interesting space battles
- Good cinematography
The Cons - The Romulans (weren't they suppose to be in this? not by much i can tell you)
- Weak villains? Shinzon needed more character and depth!
- Trek women? Boy they get the raw deal don't they? (Dr Crusher, Troi)
- Riker given little to do, and LaForge didn't seem like LaForge.
- Plot felt rushed, Story was forced on and usually the same
Good for 2 hours and the cinema was packed but it was the usual, Enterprise only ship in the area blab blab by 40mins in. By then the plot was interesting, going to the Romulan homeworld to see the villain of the piece Shinzon! whom the Federation fear will invade rather than seek the peace he boasts about first.
For those who have seen it you realise i'm avoiding the spoilers for those who haven't seen it in either the U.S. or U.K.? i must say after watching only two trailers for this film, it sure spoil it for me? I thought lack of hype stop Nemesis from making money in the States but the way the film plays, best to avoid all trailers while you still can!
It's funny, Star Wars and LOTR's needed more trailers and hype to rake in the killer bread at cinemas, the way Nemesis played if you saw the trailer you saw some plot moments before they happened in the film "Watch the desert chase in both trailers before seeing the film if you doubt me" Seems LOTR and Harry Potter have one thing i common that shouldn't be ignored by directors, they gave us more story with more running time i.e. more plot!
If a film is 2 hours 30 mins or 3 hours long and is deep in story and action, it's a winner hands down. Nemesis is a even numbered Trek and the myth about even numbered one's in the series has been broken now! It's still a good film, but not one to see over and over though.
Since old Ron Moore wants to eliminate sound in the new Galactica, what i say is, "Nuts to that" movies get louder and louder and sci-fi fantasy movies and TV shows need sound, best thing about Nemesis is sound. The Subwoofer in the cinema screen roared through everyone. If you didn't keep you mouth closed while eating popcorn your teeth would have cracked open. Funnier still all of the old Next Generation crew together one last time seem sad, although in this one they didn't behave as if they were doing it for the last time (the cast) maybe thats why they felt out of character, and a little strange to us.
I'll finish this review tomorrow, i'm tired and cold need to put my feet up and eat something? anyone want to add something to this and say if it paralleled anything you'll like to see that could be avoided if Galactica's crew came back and they were out of touch, just as the TNG crew are in the Nemesis film?
Hope i can add something more positive later, only now when i seen it do i understand some of the things said about it. I even tried being open about it as much as i could.
See you soon
KJ
