From reading alot of stuff in recent days I've noticed that Adama has both been changed alot. He's still the gruff, cagey old military veteran. That's good. They also seem to have taken away from him that slight bit of campy air that was often about him. The new version is more serious, and darker. That I like.
But the new Adama losses something important.
The old Adama Was a great leader, but he became complacent. He let wishes for Peace with the Cylons sweep him along despite his better judgement. This mistake lead to the complete destruction of his entire universe. But instead of being destroyed by thie guilt and remorse, he transcended all the negative feelings and doubts, and did what his people needed. He delivered them to safety. He became a messiah who led the human race out of the reach of the Cylons.
He was much like a futuristic Moses leading the Jewish slaves from the Army of the Egyptian Pharoahs. And that is an incredibly strong powerful characterization, to become another Moses.
But in the new Moore production, he loses much of his stature. It is Laura Roslin, the new president, that orders Adama to lead the fleet. So instead of this mythological like leader...we get someone who bickers with a dying woman.
The new script from all reports thows in alot of conflicts between character. But alot of these don't necessarily help a story. Infact I see them detracting from the main thrust of the story.
...
Its like throwing in a bit of Jerry Springer.
Well maybe not that bad. (it was a joke btw)
